Manchester City vs Chelsea – Match Preview

Manchester City vs Chelsea
Saturday 23rd November 2019
FA Premier League, Etihad Stadium

Live on  Sky Sports Premier League – Kick Off: 17:30 GMT

Manchester City will be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League as they host Chelsea at the Etihad stadium on Saturday evening.

Pep Guardiola’s side entered the most recent International break with defeat, following their 3-1 loss to league leaders Liverpool at Anfield, a result which means City now trail Jurgen Klopp’s side by 9 points in the race for Premier League glory.

Their opponents Chelsea on the other hand would have been disappointed with the timing of the break, after putting together an impressing Premier League winning run. The Blues have won their last six consecutive league encounters and have lost only once in their last eleven in all competitions. Frank Lampard’s side come into Saturday evening’s fixture a point and a place better off than City.

City’s form prior to the defeat at Anfield was like the City we are used to. Minus the blip which came in their 2-0 home defeat to Wolves, last seasons champions had won three on the bounce in their pursuit of a third successive Premier League crown.

If City are to return to winning ways, then it won’t be an easy feat. Chelsea boast impeccable recent away form in the league and have won five on the bounce; their only away defeat of the season came on the opening day in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Manchester City will be hoping the recent form between the two sides continues this weekend the Citizens have win six of the last seven against Chelsea. City claimed silverware thanks to a win over Chelsea last season, albeit on penalties. Both sides played out a 0-0 draw at Wembley in February, before City eventually went on to win the shootout. The last meeting between the two sided was a massacre, and that’s putting it lightly. City ran out 6-0 winners and found themselves 4-0 up in the opening 25 minutes. Chelsea haven’t won at the Etihad since December 2016.

The referee for this weekends clash is Martin Atkinson. The 48-year old has appeared in eleven matches this season, accumulating a total of thirty-three yellow cards and one red card in the process. This considered, I would recommend a minimum of 30+ booking points for this fixture. Atkinson is yet to take charge of a match concerning Manchester City this season but took charge of Chelsea’s 3-2 away win at Norwich, where he awarded two yellow cards.

This match will be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League, with kick off scheduled to take place at 17:30 BST.

West Ham vs Tottenham Hotspur – Match Preview

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Saturday 23rd November 2019
FA Premier League, The London Stadium

Live on  BT Sport 1 – Kick Off: 12:30 GMT

West Ham United return to Premier League action this weekend as they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the London Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

It’s a familiar old face in the Tottenham dugout for this one, following Jose Mourinho’s appointment on Wednesday morning. The Portuguese takes over from Mauricio Pochettino who left the club on Tuesday night, following five-and a half years in North London.

The latest International break perhaps wasn’t the worst thing for all concerned in the Hammers camp, as their early season promise had seemed to fizzle out in recent weeks. Prior to the break, Mauricio Pellegrini’s side had lost back to back fixtures, the first time that’s happened this season.

In fact, West Ham are without a win since the end of September, which was their 2-0 home triumph over Manchester United. West Ham lost only once in their opening six Premier League encounters, but that form seems a distant memory, as they have since lost four of their last five.

Their opponents Tottenham Hotspur similarly find themselves enduring difficulties in the Premier League and find themselves in 14th place in the league. Spurs are without a win in their last five Premier League clashes, dating back to their 2-1 home win over Southampton in September. Their last Premier league outing was marred by the horrific injury sustained by Everton’s Andre Gomes in their 1-1 draw prior to the International break, a tackle which saw Spurs’ Heung-Min Son red carded, a decision which was since appealed but yet to be decided on.

If the South Korean is to be suspended, then it’s even more grim viewing for Spurs’ fans. Son has been involved in a third of Spurs’ total goals this season (6 of 18 – 3G 3A) and has consistently offered attacking positivity so far this season. Son’s goalscoring total is bettered only this season by Harry Kane, who has six.

In terms of recent affairs between the two, its been pretty level pegging. The Hammers enjoyed a rare Premier League away win over Spurs’ last season, winning 1-0 in the sides most recent meeting. In the last six clashes between these two, BTTS has landed in four of them and is a market worth exploring for this game, especially considering both sides highly erratic form this season.

The referee for this weekends clash is Michael Oliver who most recently oversaw Liverpool’s dramatic 3-1 over Manchester City. The 34-year old has taken charge of ten Premier League matches so far this campaign, accumulating a total of 34 yellow cards. This considered, I would recommend a minimum of 30+ yellow cards for this fixture. Oliver has taken charge of matches concerning both sides this season. He oversaw Spurs’ 2-2 draw away at Manchester City where he awarded one yellow card, and most recently took charge of West Ham’s 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, where he awarded 5 yellow cards.

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 1 with kick off at 12:30 GMT.

Liverpool vs Manchester City – Match Preview

Liverpool vs Manchester City
Sunday 10th November 2019
FA Premier League, Anfield

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick Off: 16:30 GMT

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Sunday as they welcome the arrival of Manchester City to Anfield.

It may only be November, but the outcome of this top of the table clash could well answer a lot of questions on both of these sides title credentials.

Liverpool enter Sunday’s showdown following their midweek Champions League win over Genk. The Reds were made to work hard for the three points, and on several occasions weathered strong periods of pressure from the Belgian side.

City on the other hand had quite the Champions League trip to Italy and back on Wednesday night. Their 1-1 draw with bottom of the group Atalanta was a surprise in itself, but the fact Pep Guardiola’s side ended up with three, yes three different players in goal that night, including right-back Kyle Walker. Ederson hobbled off injured at half-time, before replacement Claudio bravo was given his marching orders for hauling down Josep Ilicic in the second half.

In the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been almost perfect, but are still unbeaten. Liverpool have won ten of their eleven matches this season, and drew the other away at their rivals, Manchester United. Despite Liverpool’s emphatic start to their league campaign, there has been an underlying issue, their ability to keep clean sheets. The reds kept a total of 21 clean sheets last season, whist saw their summer acquisition Alisson scoop the Premier League golden glove. This season Liverpool have kept two clean sheets, both away from home. Liverpool are yet to keep a premier league clean sheet at Anfield, but Sunday would without doubt be the perfect time to do so.

In the opposition goal, Pep Guardiola has confirmed that goalkeeper Ederson will miss Sunday’s trip to Anfield with a suspected muscular issue, which saw him limp off in Italy in midweek. Claudio Bravo is poised to step in for the inured Brazilian, and the Chilean has an interesting PL record. Bravo has made 25 PL appearances, conceded 27 goals, and has kept 6 clean sheets. It will be interesting to discover how the absence of Ederson will effect the reigning champions, as the race for a 3rd consecutive crown heats up.

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last three matches against Liverpool, and claimed early bragging rights at the start of the season with a penalty shootout victory in the Community shield. Liverpool’s last win against City came in April 2018, in the second leg in the Champions League quarter-final. Liverpool beat City in both legs, as well as defeating them in the league, ending any hopes of an invincible season. The last fixture at Anfield ended in, surprisingly, a  0-0 draw.

The referee for this weekend’s crunch clash is Michael Oliver. Oliver has taken charge of 12 Premier league matches so far this season, awarding 32 yellow cards in these games. Oliver has overseen Liverpool twice this season; the opening day win over Norwich, and the away win over Chelsea. In these two fixtures he has awarded 8 yellow cards in total. Oliver has too taken charge of two city matches, their 2-2 draw with Tottenham where he awarded one yellow card, and their 3-1 win over Everton, where he awarded 4 yellow cards.

This match will be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League, with kick-off scheduled to take place at 16:30 BST on Sunday afternoon.
