Scotland vs England Match Preview

World Cup Qualifiers, Group F, Hampden Park, Glasgow

Scotland vs England Match Preview – The oldest match in football rears its head again as Gareth Southgate’s England travel to Gordon Strachan’s Scotland for the Battle of Britain in Group F.

England, having faced an acrimonious elimination from Euro 2016 by Iceland in the last 16, have been in upheaval since. Roy Hodgson immediately had his position terminated and Sam Allardyce was instated to steady the ship as he always does.

However, Allardyce lasted just one game in charge; he was dismissed after being caught on video explaining how to circumvent FA rules and acting ‘inappropriately’.

Since then, former U21 boss Gareth Southgate has been appointed and instilled stability into the side – England sit comfortably top of Group F on 13 points at the half-way point of 5 games and the much-fancied Three Lions look set to qualify bar an unlikely collapse.

Fortunes are different for the Scots, however, they have failed to qualify for the last 9 major tournaments and they currently find themselves 4th in the qualifying group on just 7 points following disappointing results such as a home 1-1 draw against Lithuania and a 3-0 hammering at Slovakia.

Manager Gordon Strachan has had scrutiny involving his position as a consequence and it seems doubtful that Scotland will turn it around to qualify for their first World Cup and tournament since 1998. A blockbusting victory over arch-rivals England could perhaps ignite that fire to achieve something special.

Team News
Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has missed out training this week but finds himself back in contention as Strachan has a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has pulled out of the England side with a ‘minor injury’ picked up whilst training and full-back Nathaniel Clyne has also withdrawn from the squad.

Players to Watch
Scotland’s Kieran Tierney has garnered plaudits and adulation for his stellar performances at left-back this season for Celtic – including a wonderful display in The Bhoys’ 3-3 draw with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in The Champions League at the beginning of the campaign. Likely to be deployed on the opposite right-hand side again for his country in what will be his fourth cap; 20-year-old Tierney is a marauding full-back with plenty of potential to disrupt opposition defences and undoubtedly has the ability to do so in this game.

Adam Lallana is often a player that divides opinion; overrated for his lack of output or underrated for his selfless work-rate – the Liverpool midfielder never has it easy. Despite this; the ex-Southampton man had a wonderful season under Jurgen Klopp in a new central midfield role – contributing 8 goals and 7 assists in 31 appearances in the Premier League. For England, the 29-year-old had to wait until his 27th appearance to find the net, but it came with a pivotal injury-time winner against Slovakia in what proved to be Allardyce’s solitary match. Lallana’s technical ability has never been doubted and with a new-found eye for goal (he has also scored against Scotland and Spain since) could be a difference-maker on the night.

Summary
England are huge favourites to compile Scottish misery, but it will be a tight affair as Scotland will be desperate not to lose and all but eradicate any qualification hopes.
History and form does favour England though, Scotland not being victorious between the two sides since 1999 (3 losses since) and England are undefeated in their last 4 visits to Scotland.

Remarkably, England haven’t been on the losing side in a qualification match since October 2009 so it will take the imaginative and improbable to destroy that record. But in rival matches, anything is possible.

Blackpool vs Exeter City – Match Preview

Skybet League two Playoff Final, Wembley, London 3pm

Blackpool and Exeter will compete at Wembley in the final match of the League Two season for a place in England’s third tier.

The semi-finals could not have been more exciting; both ties finishing 6-5 on aggregate in enthralling contests to reach the final.
The Grecians made it to Wembley courtesy of Jack Stacey’s dramatic 95th minute winner to break Carlisle hearts.
Astoundingly, Blackpool also benefitted from a remarkable 95th minute injury time winner – the ball unfortunately rebounding off Luton goalkeeper Stuart Moore and into the net to send Blackpool fans into raptures.

The Tangerines have had an incredibly difficult past couple of seasons; amidst experiencing various off-field problems they have suffered consecutive relegations to find themselves in England’s fourth tier. Only 5000 tickets have been sold and the boycotts organised to protest against Oyston’s ownership of the club looks set to continue to Wembley. In contrast, Exeter have sold over three times as many tickets for the massive clash.
Manager Gary Bowyer has, however, instilled some stability at Bloomfield Road and the club are attempting to bounce straight back into League One at the first time of asking.

Exeter themselves are trying to ply their trade in League One for the first time since 2013 and English football’s current second longest serving manager Paul Tisdale will be confident his side can find glory.

Team News
Gary Bowyer has a full squad to choose from for the big occasion, with every player available for Blackpool after training all week.

Exeter, however, still have Matt Jay and Robbie Simpson unavailable – but have no new injury concerns so Tisdale could name an unchanged side from the semi-final victory over Carlisle.

Player to Watch
Exeter forward Ollie Watkins has received numerous plaudits this season; not least after being awarded of the English Football League Young Player of the Year. The 21-year-old has plundered 15 goals in the league this season; notably his brace against Carlisle to send The Grecians to Wembley. Watkins also has 7 assists, and is noted for his dribbling ability and lightning pace and he could well be the difference in attaining promotion.

Summary
Just two points separated the two teams after the entirety of the league season and as such the match is too tight to call beforehand.

However, Blackpool have beaten Exeter in 5 of the last 8 meetings between the two sides and are undefeated against The Seasiders are undefeated in this campaign’s encounters.
Blackpool are seeking success in their record-equalling 7th appearance at Wembley (Crystal Palace are the only other side who can match that total) and will be hoping such experience will be invaluable.

Additionally, Exeter have only achieved a solitary clean sheet in their last 19 outings so this might well be an attacking affair.

Arsenal vs Chelsea – Match Preview

FA Cup Final, Wembley, London 5.30pm

Arsenal and Chelsea battle for England’s oldest trophy as Antonio Conte seeks a brilliant league and cup double in what could be Arsene Wenger’s last match.

The FA Cup may not still possess the same aura as days gone by but still provides an excellent spectacle of football at England’s greatest stage – rarely do teams and managers possess the opportunity to etch themselves into English footballing history with victory and this competition provides just that.

The culmination of the English season sees two sides and two managers desperate for victory for completely contrasting reasons.

The Gunners have not won any other major competition bar the FA Cup since the ‘Invincibles’ team of 2004, but are seeking a third FA Cup title in 4 years. This lack of success has seen the discontent amongst Arsenal fans grow and grow and that unhappiness has reached bubbling point – protests demanding change throughout the season against Wenger and the board are illustrated consistently.
This year feels like it may well be Wenger’s last in charge, so the Frenchman would love to solidify his legacy as the most successful manager in FA Cup history and claim a 7th crown.
A 2-1 victory after extra time against Manchester City in the semi-final proves Arsenal can rise to the occasion and the North-London side will undoubtedly believe they can win.

Chelsea’s season is in stark contrast to their London counterparts; after claiming a fifth Premier League title in the past couple of weeks Antonio Conte seeks to become only the second manager to win a league and cup double in his first season and lead Chelsea to become only the third team to win more than one double – after Manchester United and their obstacles to do so Arsenal.

The Blues’ season really began after being outclassed 3-0 at the Emirates in late September – this prompted a change in formation to the now famed 3-4-2-1 and began a dominating sequence of 13 consecutive wins in the Premier League. Chelsea have since never looked back and bar a late resurgence from Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham Hotspurs scarcely looked in danger of claiming a second Premier League title in three years.

Both sides come into the match in excellent form, Arsenal winning their last 5, and 8 of their last 9 since Wenger’s switch to 3 at the back, and Chelsea romping to the title after 6 straight wins to finish the campaign.
Arsenal finished 5th and subsequently missed out on Champions League football, so an FA Cup victory is all Wenger’s men have left to play for to salvage an otherwise incredibly disappointing season. Such motivation should be looked at as dangerous.

Team News
A theme of Chelsea’s season has been the full squad at Antonio Conte’s disposal. Saturday will be the same as Chelsea hope their consistency in shape and personnel carries them over the line to a fantastic double.

Arsenal, on the other hand, do indeed have serious injury worries – particularly in central defence. Captain and key defender Laurent Koscielny received a straight red card for a rash challenge against Everton so suspension prevents him from leading his side out at Wembley. Gabriel Paulista is still ruled out whilst Shkodran Mustafi remains a doubt providing a real headache for Arsene Wenger should he continue to use his 3 at the back system. Often unused this season; Per Mertersacker is set to play. Kieran Gibbs is also a doubt but other fitness concerns Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alexis Sanchez should be cleared to play.

Players to Watch
Eden Hazard has been instrumental in Chelsea’s remarkable season. The diminutive winger has dazzled under Conte and after last season’s blip, has been the usual irrepressible force we are accustomed to. The Belgian international has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season; including a great strike to regain the lead in the FA Cup semi-final against Spurs. Hazard is truly one of the world’s elite players and has the capability to win matches single-handedly – Chelsea will be hoping that he does just that.

Alexis Sanchez scored 29 and assisted 18 goals this season Photo Credit: skysports.com

Alexis Sanchez is the definition of talisman for Arsenal. Despite Arsenal’s wholly underwhelming campaign, the Chilean has flourished with a remarkable best-ever return of 29 goals and 18 assists in all competitions – the highest combined total of any Premier League player. The ex-Barcelona forward’s dynamism and creativity assures constant menace and there is no doubt whatsoever that Sanchez has the confidence to produce a moment of magic at any given moment. The attacking talent on display in this match is vast but it would be hard to back against Sanchez’s light shining brightest.
