Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal
Thursday 25th October 2018, Jose Alvalade
UEFA Europa League – Group E Qualifier

BT Sport 1 – 17:55 GMT.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal: Arsenal face their toughest Europa League assignment as they take on Sporting Lisbon looking for their 11th consecutive win in all competitions.

The Gunners extended their run to ten games on Monday night, coming from behind to beat Leicester 3-1. Mesut Ozil was the star of the show as he orchestrated a scintillating fightback. The German scored the first before playing major roles in the second and third which saw the Gunners run out deserved winners. Prior to Ozil’s intervention, Leicester had looked value for their lead, causing major problems. With Sokratis Papastathopolous injured, Rob Holding deputised in defence. After picking up an early booking, the Englishman could have easily conceded a penalty, with the score at 0-0. That further underlined the need for patience as Unai Emery moulds his squad over the coming seasons.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his fine form in front of goal with another brace off the bench. The Gabonese striker achieved the same feat in their victory over Fulham a fortnight ago. With Alexandre Lacazette playing so well, Emery has a real headache to get his two star strikers on the field together, in a suitable formation. Having started the last two on the bench, Aubameyang could be a great bet for first goalscorer If he starts this match.

Sporting Lisbon have had a tricky start to their league campaign. They sit in fifth place in the Primeira Liga, four points behind league leaders Benfica. They have, however, won five of their last seven games in all competitions, including both of their Europa League matches. Former Manchester United winger Nani is their top scorer this season, with three goals and two assists in seven league matches.

Damir Skomina is the referee for this game. The Slovenian official has an averaged 4.30 card per game across 150 games. As a result, I would recommend a maximum booking points total of 60+ points for this game.

Whilst this is still Arsenal’s toughest game in Group E, I’d still expect them to win. Much will depend on the side Emery fields, and how many youngsters he starts. Either way, I think they will get another victory, albeit by a narrow margin.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 1 with kick off at 17:55 GMT.

Prediction: Sporting Lisbon 1-2 Arsenal

Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda – Match Preview

Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda
Tuesday 18th September 2018, Anfield
UEFA Champions League – Group C Qualifier

BT Sport 2 – 20:00 GMT.

Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda: Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from defeat again Napoli last time out and claim top spot in Group C when they take on Crvena Zvezda at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten since that defeat in Naples three weeks ago, having drawn with Manchester City and beaten Huddersfield since. Their win over the Terriers at the weekend was scrappy, but a hallmark of a good side; winning without playing well. The Reds remain joint top of the Premier League, level on points with Manchester City. Mohamad Salah scored the decisive goal at the weekend, as he showed signs of returning to his best form. The Egyptian scored on international duty as well, which could kick-start his season needs. Without Sadio Mane and Roberto Firimino, it was vital Salah stepped up to the plate to secure three points.

The Reds hold the joint-best defensive record in the league, having only shipped three goals in nine games. City hold an identical record, which comes as no surprise given they are the top two sides. Liverpool’s front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane are yet to reach the heights of last campaign, but there improved defensive form is what has kept them up at the top of the table. Virgil van Dijk put in another mammoth display, alongside Dejan Lovren, with Joe Gomez again at right back. They’ve had a complete transformation defensively when you compare them to 12 months ago.

Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) sit bottom of Group C, with one point from their opening two fixtures. They currently top the Serbian SuperLiga, having taken 34 points from a possible 36 in the league. Their only defeat of the campaign came in this competition, although it was a 6-1 loss at the hands of PSG. Richmond Boakye is their main source of goals, having scored five times in the league already this campaign.

Daniel Siebert is the referee for this game. The German official plies his trade in the Bundesliga, where he has taken charge of three games this season. Across those matches, he has averaged four cards per game. As a result, I would advise a maximum of 50+ total booking points for this fixture.

Given the record of these two sides, it’s very difficult to look past a home win. Liverpool haven’t been scintillating in attack yet this season, but this game represents a good opportunity to find the net.

Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 2 with kick-off at 20:00.

Manchester United vs Juventus – Match Preview

Manchester United vs Juventus
Tuesday 23rd October 2018, Old Trafford
UEFA Champions League – Group H Qualifier

BT Sport 2 – 20:00 GMT

Manchester United vs Juventus: Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford with Juventus as they take on Manchester United, with both sides looking for a vital three points in Group H.

The Reds Devils will be buoyed by their positive display at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, which almost saw them come away victorious. Anthony Martial’s brace was cancelled out in the 96th minute by Ross Barkley as the game ended 2-2. Martial has now scored three goals in his last two games. He has bundles of ability and potential, but getting it out of him on a regular basis is Mourinho’s main challenge. Juan Mata also put in another strong display after coming off the bench to start the fightback against Newcastle a fortnight ago. Mourinho sold Mata to United during his stint as Chelsea manage, so it’s always been uncertain whether the Portuguese manager trusts the Spaniard. However, given his recent displays, it is nearly impossible to leave him out of the side.

Despite the positives, it was another game where United failed to keep a clean sheet. They’ve only managed two in eight games, in all competitions, shipping 11 goals in that time. They currently sit in ninth in the league, seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. In Group H, they have four points from two games, after beating Young Boys and drawing with Valencia. To ensure their place in the knockout stages, they need to pick up some points in their doubleheader against the Italian champions.

Juventus have maximum points from their two games and have Ronaldo back from suspension. The Portuguese forward scored on his only visit to Old Trafford since leaving in 2009, where he scored in a 2-1 win for Real Madrid. The Old Lady currently top Serie A, with 25 points from nine games. At the weekend, they dropped their first points of the season after a 1-1 draw with Genoa, with Ronaldo again on the scoresheet. Paulo Dybala grabbed a hattrick last time out against Young Boys, highlighting the strength of depth Juventus hold in attack.

Milorad Mazic is the referee for this game. The Serbian official took charge of PSV’s 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan in the last round, and also refereed last year’s Champions League final. He has an average card total of 4.49 per game, across 120 matches. As a result, I would advise a maximum of 60+ total booking points for this fixtures.

This is a game that United dare not lose if they are to reach the last 16. Juventus will also be cautious about getting beat, given the pair meet again in a fortnight. Therefore, I think this will be a 1-1 draw.

Manchester United vs Juventus will be televised on BT Sport 2 with kick-off at 20:00 GMT.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Juventus
