Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers – Match Preview

Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
Sunday 9th December 2018
FA Premier League, St James’ Park

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick-Off: 16:00 GMT

Newcastle vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: Wolves will be looking to build on their win against Chelsea with another strong performance against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Wolves ended their dreadful run of five defeats in six games with a surprising 2-1 win over Chelsea in midweek. Goals from Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota completed the turnaround, much to the surprise of most inside Molineux. That result was exactly what Nuno Espirito Santo’s side needed after such a poor run.

The Portuguese boss made a tactical change and moved into a 3-5-2 formation instead of his favoured 3-4-3. That gave Wolves an extra man in their midfield, which allowed them more stability in the centre of the park. Morgan Gibbs-White put in a dazzling display in that trio. The 18-year-old academy graduate made his first Premier League start after impressing from the bench and created the equaliser which got them back into the contest. With Ruben Neves set to return from suspension for this fixture, it will be interesting to see whether MGW makes way, or whether Nuno sticks with his young English talent.

Newcastle have been through a recent revival and sit 14th in the table, four points above the relegation zone. Rafa Benitez’s men have only lost once in their last six games and picked up an eye-catching point away at Everton in midweek. They have won two of their last three home games to boot and appear to have made St James’ Park a much harder place to play recently. Salomon Rondon’s recent form has been a huge role in that good form. The Venezuelan international has scored three goals in his last four games.

Mike Dean is the referee for this game, fresh from taking charge of the North London derby last weekend. The Englishman has officiated 11 top-flight matches this season, accumulating an average booking points total of 48.2. Therefore, I’d advise a maximum of 60+ total points for this fixture.

This game doesn’t really have the billing of a goals fest. Therefore, given Newcastle’s decent run of late and the fact Wolves are recovering from a poor one, I think this will end all square.

Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers will be televised live in the UK on Sky Sports Premier League with kick-off at 16:00 GMT.

Chelsea vs Manchester City – Match Preview

Chelsea vs Manchester City
Saturday 8th December 2018
FA Premier League, Stamford Bridge

Live on BT Sport 1 – Kick-Off: 17:30 GMT

Chelsea vs Manchester City – the Champions will be looking to continue their assault on the Premier League title when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Citizens took another three points in midweek, with a 2-1 win at Watford. In truth, it should have been a much larger margin of victory, after controlling the game for large portions. It wasn’t until Watford pulled one back in 83rd-minute that City ever looked like they’d not win the game.

Riyad Mahrez was at his sparkling best, setting up the first goal and scoring the second. That result means City have dropped just four points from their opening 15 games and remain unbeaten. If they continue on their current trajectory, they will finish on 104 points, surpassing last year’s record of 100. It would also be the first time they have ever retained the Premier League, which would be an important feat.

Chelsea found themselves undone against out-of-form Wolves in midweek as they lost 2-1 at Molineux. Despite taking the lead through Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Maurizio Sarri’s side threw away their advantage as Wolves turned the game on its head. Sarri made a few changes to his midfield, with Mateo Kovacic and Jorgino left out, although they are likely to return to the side this weekend. That was only Chelsea’s second defeat of the season but both have come in their last four games.

Those losses have been a reminder to some that Chelsea are still a work in progress. They struggled under Antonio Conte last season and it will take time for Sarri to get the side the way he wants it. These defeats may help to dampen expectations a little, after such a strong start to the season.

Andre Marriner is the referee for this game. The Englishman has officiated 13 top-flight games this season. In that time, he has accumulated an average booking points total of 32.3. Therefore, I would recommend a maximum of 50+ total points for this fixture.

Chelsea will be wanting to bounce back from their midweek defeat, whilst City have been relentless in their surge for the title. City won here at Stamford Bridge last year thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s goal. Whilst the Belgian won’t be on the field on Saturday, I think City will come away with another three points.

Chelsea vs Manchester City will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 1 with kick-off at 17:30 GMT.

Manchester United vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Manchester United vs Arsenal
Wednesday 5th December 2018
FA Premier League, Old Trafford

Live on BT Sport 2 – Kick-Off: 20:00 GMT

Manchester United vs Arsenal – United will be hoping to make ground on Arsenal when they host Unai Emery’s men at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw by Southampton at the weekend. In truth, Jose Mourinho’s side were lucky to escape with a point. They found themselves 2-0 down after 15 minutes and were blown away by the Saints. Romelu Lukaku finally ended his goal drought to drag them back into the game, before Ander Herrera rescued a point. Although the result was disappointing, Mourinho will be pleased to see the Belgian back on the scoresheet.

That result left them seventh after 14 games, on 22 points. They are already on 22 points, eight points behind fifth-placed Tottenham. Given how well the other five sides have started, United look some way behind. This already seems like a must-win match, although that sounds a little daft to say in December. Not qualifying for the top four would be a disaster, given the amount they’ve spent. It would also be difficult to see Mourinho surviving if that was to happen.

Arsenal produced a fantastic performance in the game of the weekend as they beat Tottenham 4-2. The Gunners turned the score on its head with a spirited second-half performance. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang again starred as he scored twice. His second, which made the score 2-2, was particularly impressive; a precise first-time finish from 25 yards. That result was a statement of intent from Arsenal, especially given they were 2-1 down at the break. There seems to be a renewed steel about them, which has been missing for several years. Lucas Torreira embodies that renaissance. The tigerish midfielder has been a revelation since his move from Sampdoria, he looks like they have been missing for several years.

Chris Kavanagh is the referee for this game. The Englishman has officiated nine top-flight matches this season. In that time, he has accumulated an average booking points total of 37.8. Therefore, I would advise a maximum if 50+ total points for this game.

Manchester United really need to win this game but Arsenal are on a 19-game unbeaten run so that won’t be an easy feat. Therefore, I think this will end in a draw, which wouldn’t be a fantastic result for Mourinho.

Manchester United vs Arsenal will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 2.
