Wimbledon Day 8 – Single’s Preview – The quarter finals are here! Tuesday brings the start of the fifth-round, starting with the Women’s singles. With tension high, who will come out victorious and secure a place in the last four?

Here’s a look at the action on day eight of Wimbledon.

 

Johanna Konta V Simona Halep

Konta became the first British female to reach the quarter finals of Wimbledon for 33 years with her fourth-round victory. She beat Caroline Garcia 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to make it through to the last eight, making this her best Wimbledon tournament. The world number seven will take part in only her third grand slam quarter-final, and reached this stage of the Australian Open earlier in the year.

Her opponent Halep is now the highest seed left in the competition, ranked second. She came out on top in her fourth-round tie beating Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. The Romanian reached this stage of Wimbledon last year, and will be hoping to go one better to make the semi-final. She was recently runner up at the French Open, and got to the quarters of last year’s Australian Open.

Venus Williams V Jelena Ostapenko

Williams came through her fourth-round tie unscathed and she won in straight sets. She beat Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-2, to secure only her first third Wimbledon quarter final since 2010. The American has dropped only one set in her four games so far this competition, and has won her last two in straight sets.

Ostapenko also came through her game in straight sets. The Latvian beat Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 to set up her tie with Williams. Ranked 13th in the world, she comes in to the tournament in good form, having recently won the French Open, her first ever grand slam win.

World number fifteen Muguruza caused the biggest shock of this year’s tournament, knocking out world number one Angelique Kerber in round four. The Spaniard came out 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner to set up her second Wimbledon quarter final in five years. She also reached this same stage of the Australian Open earlier in the year.

Kuznetsova herself is world number eight, and came through her fourth-round match in straight sets. She beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-4 to reach her first Wimbledon quarter final since 2006. This is quite the resurgence from the 32-year-old who may be wondering if this is her last chance to win her first ever grand slam.

Today’s horse racing preview comes from three meetings with selections from Ayr, Ripon and Windsor.

With no selections yesterday, basically nothing caught my eye to be fair, Saturday resulted in a nice winner as Battaash oozed class to seal the race in good style, Pavilion was not given the greatest of rides being stuck on the rails, but had every chance despite hanging slightly.

 

 

13.45 Ayr – Racing UK Now In HD EBF Novices Stakes (6f)

This should be a big opportunity for Another Batt to record his second career win, George Scott’s Windsor Knot juvenile did himself justice I thought when finishing midfield in the Windsor Castle, a race that will throw up winners. The runner up Roussel has already run well again when second to a smart sprinter in Havana Grey at Sandown in the Listed Dragon Stakes weekend just gone.

Dropping back into this sphere he really should be taking this company apart; the market seems to be speaking volumes with a very eye catching booking of Danny Tudhope to help the cause. As for dangers, Richard Fahey’s Cosa Nostra ran a respectable fifth on debut at Nottingham, he is bred to get further than this and could give the selection most to do.

ANOTHER BATT : 3pt Win @ 5/4 (BOG)

15.15 Ayr – Follow @Racing_UK On Twitter Handicap (0-75) (13.1f)

It’s been a while since we have seen the likes of Guitar Pete on the level, in fact just under four years ago when trained by the great and late Dessie Hughes. Guitar Pete never won on the flat from all his starts in Ireland, however went on to great success as a hurdler when winning the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle and 4 YR OLD Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree.

Sandra Hughes took over the reins after the passing of her father where she has managed to take Guitar Pete to chasing, earning one success. He changed stables early this year to Nicky Richards and was quickly dropped back into the hurdle ranks when beaten just a neck on debut at Wetherby, the step up in trip to 22f when competing in the Long Distance Hurdle never really showed his potential, let’s not forget he is only seven so a baby around these ranks.

He gets the capable Josh Doyle riding him this evening who has been riding well of late, two concerns though, the ground could have had a little more give under foot and obviously the time away from the flat, however, his not overly exposed around this sphere and gets the nod.

Jim Goldies Braes of Lochlash is becoming a frustrating type to follow, three seconds now which includes twice here at Ayr. His mark of 69 is feasible to win off with only being 1lb higher than when winning this back in 2015, but once more could be following home a well handicapped selection once more.

GUITAR PETE : 2pt Win @ 4/1 (BOG)

21.05 Windsor – BGC Racing £125 Membership Handicap (0-85)  (11.5f)

John Gosden’s Wasatch Range was well beaten around this class last time at Newbury and you could have made excuses that they should have not run him in the conditions. Now back on firm ground, he should bring on the same form that saw him land his first success over 10f here at Windsor.

Knight Destroyer has been doing exactly that, destroying his opposition at Chepstow in a 0-70 handicap last month. The runner up dead heated last week off a mark of 66, this is a big hike up in the weights division and will have to take full advantage of his age allowance if he wants to win again, however I am happy to take both of these on with Ed Dunlop’s Amlad.

Two good wins recorded this year at Beverley and more recently at Newmarket when cruising home over 12f on quick ground. Oisin Murphy takes over this evening and there should be no reason why he cannot land the hatrick this evening under a jockey who is having a good season.

21.15 Ripon – St.Agnesgate Handicap (6f)  (0-70)

it’s always worth following a trainer blind that has hit form for a few weeks, Michael Dods yard have been doing just that and I strongly fancy his entry here in Chipping. Two good runs as a juvenile saw him rewarded with a win at Redcar, but the maiden has not matched up to the win, however he has taken time to come to hand on his transition career to three and showed a liking to Ayr when finishing second in a far better race than this.

Connor Beasley gets on well with him recording a form stat of (312), back on board this evening a big plus for me and strongly fancy winning ways will resume now dropped into this class. I can’t see much troubling the selection this evening, but one at a price is James Bethall’s Haworth who actually disappointed me at Haydock when I fancied him to win the race. He is still looking for his first turf win, but off a current mark of 66, it will not be that far away.

Mexico vs El Salvador – Match Preview – Mexico face El Salvador in their opening match in the Gold Cup. Mexico enter the match on the back end of a fairly successful Confederations Cup campaign; where they lost in extra time of the 3rd place play-off with European Champions, Portugal. To the average football fan, El Salvador are a rather unknown quantity, with no players of significant status on the World stage. On paper, Mexico should cruise to victory.

Mexico are the current reigning champions of the Gold Cup; a title that manager, Juan Carlos Osario, will look to successfully defend following a promising run of performances in the recent Confederations Cup. However, with the Confederations Cup campaign still only a week ago, the squad is seeing plenty of fresh faces, young and some uncapped players entering the fray and looking to make an impact for their country during the off season. The ‘second XI’ of Mexico have been in two recent friendlies in preparation for the Gold Cup whilst their stronger outfit was battling away in the CONFED Cup. With a 1-0 win over Ghana and a 2-1 victory over Paraguay, the Mexicans will look to carry their momentum into this opening fixture. Can they seal their first win of the Gold Cup?

Whilst Mexico have had non-stop fixtures as of late, their opponents have had quite the opposite. El Salvador have only played three friendlies since late January and unsurprisingly enter this match as heavy underdogs. Most recently, a 3-0 loss to Ecuador hasn’t shone the South American’s in a very attractive light. The country itself is the most densely populated and smallest country in the Americas, however their players will be playing with immense pride against tough Mexican opposition. Manager, Eduardo Lara, joined El Salvador’s youth system in 2015 before taking charge of the senior national team last year. Can Lara lead his side to pull off a special victory?

Wimbledon Day 7 – Single’s Preview –Monday brings the beginning of the fourth-round, with only 16 players remaining. As the battle for the Wimbledon title hots up, we are bound to see more epic encounters, as we get to the nitty-gritty of the competition.

Here’s a look at the best action to come on day seven of Wimbledon.

 

Andy Murray V Benoit Paire

Murray is back in action having come out as winner in four sets against Fabio Fognini. The Italian gave Murray a game, forcing him to defend five set points in the fourth set, in a bid to force a fifth. Murray however fought back from 2-5 down and won the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. 7-5. This was Murray’s first real test of the tournament, but the mental resolve to battle back from 2-5 down underlined his strength of character and proved why he is Wimbledon champion.

His opponent Paire is in the fourth-round for the first time. The Frenchman dispatched of J Janowicz in straight sets to secure his place in the next round, where he will meet the world number one. Ranked 46th in the world Paire has very little to lose having exceeded expectation, so will try to give his all to provide a huge upset.

Muller beat Alijaz Bedene in straight sets to set up the fourth-round tie. He came out 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 winner against the Englishman. This is the furthest Muller has ever made it in Wimbledon and similar to Paire, the world number 26 will have very little to lose.

Konjuh has never reached this stage of Wimbledon, in what is only her fourth ever London tournament. The Croatian is ranked 29th in the world and has only ever made it to the quarter final of a grand slam once. She defeated Dominika Cibulkova in three sets, winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Cibulkova is world number nine, and this proves she is capable of producing an upset, as she faces the world number 11.

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Sandown with two selections from the meeting. What an action packed Saturday of finally quality racing, it’s been a slow start to July for the blog, but we are only in the first week enough time to bring in the winners.

13.50 Sandown – Coral Charge (Sprint)  (Group 3)  (5.1f)

Three of the past four running’s of this race has seen the market land the spoils, once more it is very hard to look beyond Charles Hills Battaash not making it 2-2 for the season. He looked mighty impressive when landing the Scurry Stakes over course and distance three weeks ago and I have no doubt he would of improved further at home, too good for these with age allowance.

Another that has the age allowance is James Tate’s Kyllang Rock who has made a nice transition winning a conditions race at Nottingham on seasons re-appearance to go on to finish runner up at York and Haydock in Listed events, big danger and could outrun his 12/1 odds.

BATTAASH : 3pt Win @ 5/2 (BOG)

15.00 Sandown – Coral Distaff (Listed) (8f)

This is more open than it looks this afternoon and I am not willing to over look Clive Cox’s entry here Pavilion. Despite making her turf debut I think her last run at Wolverhampton can be over looked as she was found wanting inside the final furlong, she drops back here to the dead mile and on ground that should suit her fine. Stepping out of handicap company is not always that easy but considering she has won a 0-90 race this is not that much of an upgrade..

Again we have Ascot form being put on the line, both Paco’s Angel and Queen of Time ran creditably in the Sandringham with the former coming out on top of the dual to one length, the fact that Richard Hughes filly there was giving 10lb to Queen of Time suggests there is likely more to come from her the reason why she is at the head of the market.

Standing Rock is unknown quality and we will have to wait to see how strong her maiden win was at Newbury, with a couple she beat have been turned over since.

USA vs Panama – Match Preview- The United States kick-off their Gold Cup by facing Panama at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, hoping to reclaim the crown from Mexico.

Hosts for every tournament since the Gold Cup’s inception in 1991, the United States have a level of expectation on their shoulders. The winner of this tournament faces the previous winner of this tournament in a play-off match to reach the Confederations Cup – a massive prize for teams in this competition.

This expectation is heightened based on the fact USMNT are one of only three teams to ever win the title (alongside Canada and Mexico) and only one of two to ever be victorious more than once (five times, with Mexico’s seven).

The Stars and Stripes are second favourites for this year’s edition behind arch-rivals Mexico, and Bruce Arena will be raring to capture his first title since his return as United States manager. His side face a tricky opening task to start in winning ways against overachievers Panama. In fact, this fixture is a repeat of the 2013 final – where USMNT came away with a 1-0 and the trophy.

Panama will not be taken lightly, and in fact have a rather incredible record in this competition in recent times relative to their population size and general footballing stature.

Los Canaleros have reached the quarter-finals or better in all 6 CONCACAF Gold Cups since 2005, and reached the semi-finals in each of the last three tournaments, finishing in third place in 2015 after a victory over the United States in the 3rd place play-off on penalty kicks. Also, as mentioned above Panama were runners-up (to the same opponents) in 2013 – an astounding achievement.

Ominously though, Los Canaleros have only ever beaten USMNT once in normal play, in the 2011 Gold Cup Group Stage. Could a shock be on the cards?

U.S soccer has one true wonderkid in its ranks at present, Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic. However, the highly-rated midfielder hasn’t been named in Bruce Arena’s squad so will rely on other creative forces such as Dax McCarty and Gyasi Zardes alongside new faces such as forward Dom Dwyer and uncapped Cristian Rolden.
