PDC World Matchplay 2017 – 1st Round – Darts Preview – The PDC returns with the BetVictor World Matchplay at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The World Matchplay is one of the most highly coveted and prestigious trophies that is available on the PDC Circuit.

 

Michael van Gerwen returns after beating Dave Chisnall, 8-0, in the final of the Shanghai Masters to continue his rampant reign at the top of the PDC. Adrian Lewis also returns after an injury that has seen him out of PDC action for while.

The first-round draw is mouth-watering- nay, breath-taking for any darts fans with a Sky Sports subscription. The 32-man tournament will take place over 8 days with the final on 30th July 2017; so, stock up your fridge with plenty of beer.

The Dutch dartsman will climb off his darting throne to face Steven Bunting who will know he stands very little chance. The dominance of Michael van Gerwen in the darting world is almost inconceivable and yet he makes it look so simple every time the ‘Green Machine’ pops on our TV screens.  Bunting hasn’t been in the best of form during 2017 and has seen his gradual decline down the PDC Order of Merit continue its momentum. The current Matchplay Champion shouldn’t break a sweat.

Facing each other for the first ever time at a televised event, it’s the battle of the Aussies in arguably the closest match of the first round. Having only joined forces last month at the World Cup of Darts, Anderson and Whitlock will know each other very well which makes the match ever more compelling. Whitlock is the higher ranked, however has struggled to get a rhythm as of late. Anderson is still yet to reach the shining lights we all know he is capable of but both will be massively up for this contest. Whitlock should just have the edge over his fellow countryman.

Phil Taylor is undoubtedly the king of the World Matchplay, having lifted the trophy 15 times; with Michael van Gerwen currently 13 Matchplay titles behind. Taylor will be wanting to succeed in this tournament as his announced retirement at the end of the calendar year is drawing ever closer. Gerwyn Price has been enjoying his darts a lot lately and will be able to provide a shock if Taylor isn’t at his best; would be a good bet for the longshotters. ‘The Power’ will have the crowd behind him and that should be enough to beat the Welshman.

Honduras vs Costa Rica – Match Preview – Two of the tournament’s dark horses match up as Honduras and Costa Rica begin their 2017 Gold Cup campaigns.

Both sides have history in the competition, Honduras securing the title in 2001 and Costa Rica’s success coming further back with 3 tournament wins in 1963, 1969 and 1983. They will be desperate to provide a stern challenge for regular tournament victors Mexico and the United States in this year’s edition.

Both teams are strong favourites to qualify from Group A, with the opposition coming from French Guiana and Canada (who play each other directly before this game) seeming unlikely to trouble.

Jorge Luiz Pinto’s men have a point to prove after a horrendous showing at the last Gold Cup (2015), suffering the humiliation of being eliminated at the group stage. Despite drawing with eventual 3rd place Panama, the Catrachos lost both remaining matches and finished bottom of their group.

The previous Gold Cup was also one to forget for Costa Rica, the Ticos failed to win a single match in the whole tournament, luckily scraping 3 draws against Canada, El Salvador and Jamaica to make it into the second round before being beaten by tournament winners Mexico. Oscar Ramirez will be hoping his side can justify their ‘best of the rest’ tag and challenge for this year’s crown.

Experience can be key in these tournament exchanges and both teams have such an attribute. Honduras can rely on former Wigan Athletic and Hull City defender Maynor Figueroa with 138 caps and Houston Dynamo’s Boniek Garcia with 120 caps in that department. Costa Rica have their own wealth of international experience too, coming from the likes of Michael Umana in defence who recently won his centenary cap, and ex-Fulham playmaker Brian Ruiz who himself will win his 100th cap in this match.

The major story is that Costa Rica will be without Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, a huge blow as players of such quality come scarcely at this level.

Player to Watch
Joel Campbell often cuts a frustrated figure; deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal without ever leaving permanently he has experienced a journeyman career for a man of just 25-years of age – playing in France (Lorient), Spain (Real Betis and Villareal), Greece (Olympiacos) and Portugal (Sporting CP). A strong showing at the World Cup 2014 – where Costa Rica surprised everyone by reaching the quarter-finals – displayed Campbell’s abilities as a forward with a rare blend of pace and power on the ball. In the Gold Cup players with Champions League experience are a commodity and should Campbell find that missing consistency in his game he is unquestionably a real dangerman not just to Honduras but to the entire tournament.

Portugal vs Mexico – Match Preview – European Champions Portugal begin their Confederations Cup by facing 2015 CONCACAF Cup victors Mexico in what promises to be an enticing match-up in Kazan.

Portugal have not been in the greatest of form performance wise since claiming the European crown in France last summer; stumbling over the line against weaker sides such as Andorra, Cyprus, Faroe Island and Gibraltar whilst suffering defeat against Switzerland in their opening World Cup qualifier and in a friendly against Sweden.

Mexico, on the other hand have only tasted defeat once in their last 13 outings – in a friendly against Croatia – and with the CONCACAF Gold Cup to defend in July, Juan Carlos Osorio’s side will be hoping to garner some momentum from this tournament to storm the next. El Tri are always difficult to beat and are deserved dark horses in any competition.

The two sides have only twice previously faced each other, both resulting in a victory for The Selecao – most recently in 2014 where a last minute Bruno Alves goal won the friendly.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a born winner. The 32-year-old wants to emerge victorious in every single competition he plays in and the Confederations Cup will be no different. On an unprecedented high following the magnificent success in France 2016; Portugal’s talismatic captain will be eager to prove it was no stand-alone fluke. The global superstar has also just retained the European Cup for the first time in the Champions League era with Real Madrid, and it would take a brave man to back against the current World Player of the Year to continue that form onto the international stage once again – adding to his already wonderful record of 73 goals in 139 caps for Portugal.

Javier Hernandez is an extremely popular figure in Britain after his stellar spell at Manchester United, although many feel he was underutilised for a man of his abilities before he was shipped off to Bayer Leverkusen. Since then the recently-turned 29-year-old has rebuilt his reputation by scoring 39 goals in just 76 games for the German side whilst also becoming his nation’s highest-ever goal-scorer with a massive 47 goals by netting against Croatia in May and surpassing Jared Borgetti’s record. Chicharito always has the potential to turn a half-chance into a goal and will be a constant danger to the usually resilient Portuguese defence.

Team News 
Fernando Santos is are blessed with a full-strength squad to choose from and are likely to line up with all the big hitters starting.

Rafael Marquez is the only injry concern for Mexico, a back-problem potentially keeping the experienced centre-back out of the side.

Spain U21’s vs Macedonia U21’s – Match Preview – Spain and Macedonia will kick off their Under 21’s European Championships on 17th June with their opening match in Group B. Spain haven’t held back in their team selection, flying plenty of Premier League and La Liga stars over to Poland for the tournament. Macedonia are not to be taken lightly however, having impressed in the qualifying stages and Spain will understand that they can’t walk over their opponents.

Spain’s star-studded squad will be the team to beat in this summer tournament, with the likes of Arsenal right-back, Hector Bellerin, and Real Madrid prodigy, Marco Asensio, amongst the action; just to name a few. A nation often to set the trends, Spain haven’t approached the tournament like countries such as England, and have brought players that many would assume are senior squad standard. On paper, Spain should start their campaign winning three points without a flinch.

As aforementioned, Macedonia impressed during qualifying. They topped their group that consisted of France, Iceland, Ukraine, Scotland and Northern Ireland; losing just once the whole campaign. Macedonia have lost just once in sixteen matches and most recently beat Bulgaria and Montenegro in friendlies to give them a psychological boost heading into the tournament. Striker, Marjan Radeski, will be Macedonia’s biggest threat in attack. Radeski plays his club football for FK Metalurg Skopje in the Macedonian third division but do not be fooled as the striker will cause problems. Can he help Macedonia cause a massive upset?

They will look to their dazzling array of star players to go all the way in the tournament. Euro 2016 gets underway tonight when France (the hosts) take on Romania at 8pm GMT.

The Copa America 2016 gets underway in the early hours of Saturday morning for those of you here in the UK, when hosts USA face Colombia in the tournament opener..

The Copa America is one of my favourite tournaments to watch with its end to end football and at times, lack of defensive quality…. Although in fairness the tournament plays host to some of the best attacking players in the world in Messi, Suarez & Aguero.

It is also a great tournament for us to have a bet on and I have looked into all the stats and picked out my top 5 bets for this years tournament.

1. Outright Winner: Argentina – Odds: 2.87

They are the tournament favourites and I think quite rightly so, they possess the best attacking options and have got much stronger defensively for this tournament. They enter the tournament on good form and  only have Chile as a threat in the group stage so should quality to the latter stages with ease. For me they are the most likely winners this year.

2. Outright Winner (Longshot): Ecuador – Odds: 34.00

The great thing about the Outright Winner market is that it allows you to pick an each-way bet, which means you can win 1/3 of the odds of your bet, if the team reaches the final…

My dark horse for the tournament this year are Ecuador. I think they have the players required to get through the group stage alongside Brazil and once there could be a match for any team in the latter stages… Whilst I think they might struggle if they get one of the big boys in the final, 1/3 odds on them reaching the final, I’ll take that!

3. Top Goalscorer: Almeida Gabriel Barbosa – Odds: 26.00

Whilst most people will likely be betting on the likes of Messi, Aguero or Suarez to be the top goalscorer at this years tournament, I have gone for a more outside shot.. Gabriel Barbosa is a 17 year old striker for Brazil, who plays club football at Santos… He is very highly rated and is tipped to be the next big thing from Brazil.

He scored his first goal for Brazil in his debut in a warmup game this week and I am expecting him to burst onto the scene at this tournament… Expecting him to hit a few against Haiti in the group stage.

4. Group Winners Acca: (Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina) – Odds: 9.81

It is always fun to try and pick the winners of each of the four groups at the tournament and I think the odds of 9.81 for these selections is very good. Colombia appear to only have strong competition from hosts USA to win group A and I fancy them to beat the hosts in the opening game and claim that group.

Brazil should have very little trouble in winning their group, with their only likely threat being Ecuador.

Uruguay appear to have the hardest job as they face tough competition from Mexico, but Uruguay should have more than enough defensive strength to win their group with Luiz Suarez doing his thing at the other end of the pitch.

Argentina are the tournament favourites and they have Chile to battle for top spot in the group… For me they are the strongest team so should handle the group stage well enough to top their group.

5. Opening Game: Colombia Win + BTTS – Odds: 6.00

Whilst USA are the hosts I think their odds are inflated for that very reason, Colombia have the players to take USA apart in the opening game but defensively they are not the strongest so can see this being a both teams to score game…
