Bournemouth v Middlesbrough – Match Preview – 22nd April 2017
FA Premier League, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth 3pm

The Vitality Stadium hosts a huge relegation battle as Middlesbrough travel to Bournemouth with both teams looking to end their recent horrid form.

Relegation is a very serious prospect for Middlesbrough. They currently find themselves in the relegation zone in 19th, 6 points adrift from safety and Hull in 17th.
Removing manager Aitor Karanka and replacing him with coach Steve Agnew hasn’t provided the North-East side with the desired immediate reaction and they have not won in 15 league games.

Boro have only conceded 39 goals, less than teams such as Arsenal and Liverpool. However, the issue is unquestionably the side’s inability to score goals; they are the league’s lowest scorers this season having found the net just 23 times.

In fact, the two goals Boro scored against Hull in their last away match was more than in the previous 8 on their travels combined.
Only four players have netted more than once in the whole side and without top scorer Alvaro Negredo (who only has 8 himself) the team have only managed a dire 14 goals. A win is desperately needed against an out-of-form Bournemouth team to put pressure on Swansea and Hull and reclaim hope of escaping.

Alvaro Negredo is Middlesbrough’s top scorer

The Cherries will feel a victory will see them safe, they are one place above Hull in 16th but have a 7-point cushion from Swansea in the relegation zone. A win would take them to 38 points with just 4 games remaining.

The job of securing Premier League safety seemed likely to happen a lot sooner for Eddie Howe’s men, but an awful run that has seen them win just twice on 13 matches has plummeted the Southern side back towards the danger zone.

If scoring goals is Boro’s problem, its keeping them out that is Bournemouth’s. They have only kept a clean sheet in one of their last 8 home matches too (against Swansea), conceding more than 2 goals in each of the other 7 in the process.

Team News
Bournemouth’s biggest news is that on-loan Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a hairline fracture in his leg in the defeat against Spurs.
Callum Wilson, Andrew Surman, Rhoys Wiggins and goalkeeper Adam Federici all are recovering from knee injuries.
Midfielder Dan Gosling’s knee injury also means he is a doubt.

Key players Victor Valdes and Grant Leadbitter are definitely out for Middlesbrough while Rudy Gestede and Fabio are both doubts. Arsenal loanee Callum Chambers was ineligible to face his former side Monday and had sustained a foot injury but should be fit to play this time around.

Player to Watch
Despite the Cherries’ troubles, Joshua King has had a brilliant season; particularly since the turn of the year. The Norwegian international has 13 goals in the league this campaign with a huge 10 of them coming in 2017 – only the two top scorers in the entire league, Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, have more in that time. The 25-year-old has seen a position change to a more central striker role and is reaping the rewards, scoring against such teams as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton in recent games.

Joshua King has been in fine form in 2017

Bournemouth are one of only two possible sides Middlesbrough could do the double over this season – the other being Sunderland. This highlights the struggles Agnew’s men.

Boro will be up against it too, as they have never beaten The Cherries away from home in the league. Only one of Boro’s last 29 away Premier League games against anyone has resulted in a win, against Sunderland in August 2016.

Rudy Gestede is currently on a massive 43 match run without a win in the Premier League. In fact, his only victory in the division came against Bournemouth for Villa – also in August 2016, where he scored the winner.

Norwich v Brighton Match Preview – Friday 21st April 2017

Skybet Championship, Carrow Road, Norwich – Kick Off 7.45pm

Fresh from gaining promotion to the Premier League, Brighton travel to Norwich in the knowledge that victory will clinch the Championship title. The Seagulls have had a fantastic season and find themselves 7 points clear of Newcastle in 2nd with just 3 games to play.

After finishing in the play-offs in 3 of the last 4 seasons – including finishing 3rd and missing out on automatic promotion in heart-breaking fashion last year on goal difference on the last day – Brighton will feel this as deserved success.

Brighton have had a tremendously consistent season and have only lost 7 of their 43 games in the league to date.

Norwich on the other hand have endured an underwhelming campaign; one of the favourites for automatic promotion, The Canaries have drastically underperformed and are currently sat in 8th – the best position they can finish as 6th and 7th both have 10 points more with only 3 to play.

There is optimism, as victories like Norwich’s 7-1 demolishing of 3rd place Reading and a 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest and a 5-0 beating of Brentford all give hope of Norwich hopefully emulating Brighton’s success next season and returning to the promised land of the Premier League.

Team News
Canaries’ key man Wes Hoolahan is set to return after being rested during the win over Preston. Alex Tettey’s back injury makes him a doubt. Swiss international Timm Klose and Matt Jarvis are both ruled out with knee injuries and Louis Thompson is out for the season after having surgery.

For Brighton; forward Sam Baldock has been ruled out with a glute problem alongside Shane Duffy who has a foot injury. Connor Goldson is out for the season after diagnosis of a heart problem and needing surgery.

Mastermind of the Seagulls’ success, Chris Hughton is going back to Carrow Road for the first time since being sacked whilst in the Premier League at the end of the 2014 season.

Player to Watch

EFL Championship Player of the Year Anthony Knockaert has not tasted defeat in any of the 13 separate games he has scored in this campaign (12W, 1D), and is sure to have an impact on this match.

Anthony Knockaert won the EFL Player of the Season award Photo Credit: Squawka.com

The history book suggests Brighton will find this difficult, only emerging victorious once in their last 16 visits at Carrow Road (D7, L8) and have only beaten Norwich in 1 of their last 7 league meetings in total – although that came in this season’s reverse fixture with a 5-0 demolishing in favour of the ‘Gulls.

The Championship’s best defence (Brighton, conceded just 36) plays the division’s second best attack (Norwich, scored 76 and only beaten by Fulham’s 78) meaning an intriguing clash is ahead.

Suggested Tips:

  • Skybet Price Boost – Anthony Knockaert to score from outside the penalty area – 9/1
  • Skybet Price Boost – Glenn Murray to score and Brighton to win in 90 mins – 9/2

  • Skybet Pundits’ Tip – David Prutton’s Tips – Glenn Murray to score first and Brighton to win 2-1 – 35/1
  • Skybet Featured RequestAbets – Both teams to score, 4+ corners each team and 20+ booking points each team – 15/2
  • Skybet RequestAbet Specials Up to 10/1 – 8+ Norwich corners and Brighton 30+ booking points – 15/2

Horse Racing – UK / Ireland – 21st April 2017 – Dundalk 6.25pm – Hen & Stag Packages At Dundalk Stadium Handicap

Buddha Boy – 11/4 – 2pt stake

 Notes

A tricky day at the races today and the selections are at low stakes. Mutanaaseq should be a big player here with Richard Hannon in good form at the moment. The well bred colt runs for the first time today and his half brother won first time out here in 2014. Danger would be the Tom Dascombe 2 year old, Big Time Maybe.

Horse Racing Preview – Newmarket and Cheltenham- 21st April 2017

Our horse racing preview comes from Newbury and one selection from Bath. It’s been a hard few days on the Rowley with just the placed selections bringing in a loss, but for the week just turning over a small profit on the point count. There are five selections I am confident that should go well on Friday.

14.30 Newbury – Compton Beauchamp Est Ltd Silver Bar Hip (0-100)

Andrew Balding’s Swashbuckle looked in need of the run when third on re-appearance on the all-weather at Newcastle last month. With two good wins last season off 73 & 78 at Ffos Las, he has been raised another 7lb but I actually feel now they are stepping him up further and with the fact he is actually lightly raced, should go very close in this.

Alan King is double handed here with Oceane and Rainbow Dreamer. Obviously the interesting of the pair is the latter with Ryan Moore booked. Nine lengths behind Defi Du Seuil in the Triumph Hurdle trial this year and we know how that turned out with the winner going on to land the Triumph Hurdle and Grade 1 Doom Bar at Aintree.

It’s surprising with that kind of background over hurdles he has only managed just the one win on the level from eight attempts. This is a big step up though considering only competing around the 0-85 brackets, could be vulnerable and will no doubt return hurdling in the near future.

Oceane is currently second favourite, joint with the selection. Another mix bag of running in both codes, his last win on the flat came at York when landing a similar event over 16.2f, this trip for me can see him out in my opinion and has not been in the best of form on the all-weather in his return.

Swashbuckle : 1.5pt win @ 7/2 (BOG)

15.05 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes  (10f)

The name of the race is enough to get you out of breathe by just saying it, but regardless of that I do think John Gosdens filly can do the business on her race course debut. Shutter Speed is the well bred daughter of Dansili who just managed to hold on by a neck at Yarmouth on her debut over 8.1f. The fact she was kept until the back end of her juvenile status, I would predict that there is more to come in her transition focus.

The trainer also has Enable in the race who will be ridden by William Buick. She was very impressive when on debut on the all-weather at Newcastle at the back end of the flat season. Surprisingly though she has not been seen since November and will make her turf debut this afternoon.

Sheikh Mohammad’s 3/4 million pound purchase Dubawi Prince will represent Roger Varian’s yard. He stepped up on his first transition run to win a Doncaster maiden which for me was nothing special, probably see him in better light this season in handicap company.

Raheen House I put forward when declared to run at Doncaster on the opening day of the flat season, but he was pulled out due to the ground, a winner in a York maiden last October he was then pitched in the deep end when running fifth in the Racing Post Trophy when behind Rivet who was beaten easily yesterday in the Craven Stakes.

It’s difficult to assess the ground dependency for him, failing on good to firm and soft in his career and with the ground riding quicker than usual this time of year he looks vulnerable for me.

Shutter Speed : 3pt win @ 11/8 (BOG)

16.10 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Handicap (0-100)

John Gosden is very well represented here with Chessman who does have a 2000gns entry in a couple of weeks. The son of Acclamation won with plenty in hand on his only juvenile start at Kempton when overcoming a very difficult draw.

That day he beat a useful type in Esprit De Corps who landed a massive gamble at Bath last week. On pedigree, the guineas distance should be more effective for him, but for now stays around 7f and should be landing this race under Dettori.

I can’t see many dangers in the race, Stoutes entry Pivoine could be the main danger, third on debut at Newmarket when behind Via Egnatia who was beaten convincingly this week at Newmarket. The runner up Never Surrender was beaten by Dubawi Prince at Doncaster early this month.

Chessman : 2pt Win @ 7/4 (BOG)

16.40 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Handicap (0-110)

I would like to think Roger Varian’s smart sprinter Double Up can land this race. It’s been eighteen months since we saw him land a big handicap at Ascot when fending off a big field.

Since then Double Up has failed in eight starts to get his head in front, has been rising at the weights which has done him no favours, but if he brings his last season’s Portland run to the table then we could see him going close.

Michael Easterby has had a great winter with his runners on the all-weather and I do like his entry here in Bowson Fred. He looks about ready to strike after some good efforts on the all-weather this year when notably just denied by the smart sprinter Kimberella in the Betway Dash, that winner went on to win at the Champions all weather meeting.

Bowson Fred : 1.5pt each way @ 9/2 (BOG)

18.30 Bath  – Clifford Hillier Handicap (0-65)

A low graded affair which should be going to Archie Watson’s Attain. Not the greatest of races and even though he has failed to win since the turn of the year, the runs have been consistent enough to see him win here.

His form returning to turf puts him around 5lb ahead of the handicap, with a win in a 0-70 last year at Sandown he would not have to do much to land this average contest. Best of the rest comes from the Oliver Greenhall yard in Spirit of the Vale.

She has won twice this year on the all-weather at Newcastle off marks of 46 & 51, not a bad run when fifth at Redcar on season turf re-appearance, but does look exposed on turf off current mark.

Attain : 3pt win @ 7/4 (BOG)

 Notes

Kittens Johnstown made a winning debut at Ayr last September as a two year old and the form looks good as the 2nd has gone out and won next time out. The colt holds an entry in the Irish Derby and looks to be the one to beat.

Lord Murphy has been running very well, winning and then just losing out when placing at Wolverhampton. Upped 4lb but an improving gelding who should go close once more. Adam Kirby takes the ride today.

Horse Racing Preview – Newmarket – 20th April 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Newmarket, with 3 selections across the card. Wednesday came as a complete washout after some questionable performances, but no point in sitting here complaining about it, it is what it is for the start of the flat season. Let’s get down to it and hopefully the run of the green comes our way.

13.50 Newmarket – Bet365.com Handicap (2) (6f) 0-100

There looks solid value in the race with Mark Johnston’s Rich & Famous who won over course and distance last August. There was something amiss when he finished last in the Listed Rockingham Stakes on his last run as a juvenile.

I would like to think there is more to come from the son of Bernardini who showed promise on his first run which has thrown pattern winners. There are a couple of serious dangers in the race, probably more so from the Roger Varian Victory Angel who has run two good races at Doncaster which resulted in a placing in a maiden when behind Tafaakhor who recently won at Brighton.

On his return to Donny, he won decisively when landing the Cock of the North maiden, Castlecare ran well when fourth in the Listed JLT Stakes at Newbury and drops back to 6f this afternoon.

Rich and Famous : 1pt each way @ 13/2 (BOG)

14.25 Newmarket – Bet365 Handicap (2) 7f  0-100

David O’Meara introduces his Range Rover Hcp winner from this year’s Dubai carnival in Salateen who has been improving with every run this year which has seen him win the Listed Wulfruna Stakes on the all-weather and at the all weather championships, ran third to the useful Sovereign Debt.

Salateen won over course and distance back in the autumn in this company in a 0-105 and make his presence felt under Ryan Moore. Tabaarak has been bumping into some useful types which has included the likes of pattern winner Thikriyaat and Atlantic Sun who won on the all-weather in France.

The Hannon runner has been gelded and should settle more into this race, with a decent draw in stall 2 and current champ Jim Crowley taking the ride. The biggest danger to all is John Gosden’s Castle Harbour. After winning his first two races of his career which included over course and distance, a good run in the Jersey Stakes when sixth and built on that when third to Sovereign Debt at Doncaster which saw the likes of Kimberella back in fifth. That form has turned out solid with Kimberella notching up two wins from the new campaign which included the Sprint Championship win at Lingfield.

Castle Harbour ran terribly in the Doncaster Stakes on seasons re-appearance but drops bank to 7f this afternoon which should sharpen him up, Frankie Dettori is riding with confidence, notching up two winners yesterday which included the Nell Gwyn.

Castle Harbour : 1pt each way @ 13/2 (BOG)

15.35 Newmarket – Bet365 Craven Stakes (Group 3) (8f)

Last year’s Racing Post winner Rivet turns up her for William Haggas, the smart son of Fasting Rock has some big engagements on the racing calender in 2017.

He was put in his place by Churchill in the Dewhurst when finishing a fading fifth and I am not expecting any improvement on his first appearance, but had to be respected on the back of his juvenile form. One they all have to best is Aidan O’Brien’s War Decree who I think will win this year’s 2000gns.

Yes, it’s a bold statement, but we are only a couple of weeks away from the first classic of the season. I watched his Superlative Stakes run here last year and even though he was beaten by half a length on the day, the improvement was swift when reversing his defeat to Boynton in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes.

The runner up is the horse to take the form line on. Thunder Snow this year has won the Group 3 UAE 2000gns and the Group 2 UAE Derby and would be interesting if turning up at Newmarket in two weeks’ time for a possible clash with War Decree who is sired by War Front, a classic star in the making.

War Decree : 3pt win @ 9/4 (BOG) NAP

Borussia Dortmund travel to Ligue 1 leaders Monaco in the Champions League quarter-final second leg facing a 3-2 deficit from the first tie – a match that took place just 24 hours after alleged terror attacks resulted in explosions near the Dortmund coach and a fractured arm for defender Marc Bartra.

The story of the first leg
After having an extension request rejected by UEFA, Dortmund were visibly and understandably out of sorts and failed to transfer their imperious home form in the league (undefeated in all 14 played, winning 11 and drawing 3) to the European stage. Despite conceding just 8 in the league at home all season the attacking force of Monaco put 3 away goals in the German’s net – taking a commanding stance going into the second leg.

Kylian Mbappe took advantage of slack defending twice in the game – firstly by finding space and having the ball rebound of him fortunately into the open net, and secondly intercepting a careless back-pass from Lukasz Piszcek to run and finish with impressive composure.
An uncharacteristic error from Sven Bender as he bundled the ball into his own goal felt unfair as the Germans were noticeably affected by the events 24 hours previous.
Dembele and Kagawa’s well worked goals kept Dortmund in with a chance in a very attacking match.

Mbappe scored a brace to give the French side the lead going into the 2nd leg

Team News

For Monaco; Fabinho is suspended after picking up a booking in the first leg but Tiemoue Bakayoko and Benjamin Mendy will return from their own suspensions.

Dortmund will be without Marc Batra as he recovers from the above mentioned arm injury as the result of events last week.
However, BVB favourite Marco Reus is expected to play after returning from injury in the weekend’s 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the league.

Marco Reus returns after injury for tonight’s crucial 2nd leg

Monaco are looking to extend their dominance as France’s most successful European team; no other French side has made the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition more than once – progression will result in Monaco’s fourth appearance in the last four (others coming in 1993/94, 1997/98 and 2003/04).

Dortmund will be up against it as only Barcelona (90) have scored more than the 88 league goals Monaco have plundered this season and no team in the competition’s history has overturned a 3-2 home deficit from the first leg to progress.

Expect goals. No team left in the competition has conceded more than Monaco’s 15. There have also been over 2.5 goals in Monaco’s last 6 and 9 of Dortmund’s last 11 Champions League matches.

The clash will begin at Stade Louis II 7:45pm 19th April.

Manchester United v Anderlecht – Match Preview  – Thursday 20th April 2017

Europa League Quarter Final 2nd Leg (1-1) Old Trafford, Manchester

Manchester United will want to exorcise the reoccurring demons of conceding late by beating Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-final second leg in their conquest to win the tournament and getting Champions League football in the process.

Story of the first leg
What has also been the story of United’s season; despite dominating the ball and looking largely comfortable, profligacy in front of goal and a momentary lapse in concentration defensively keep the scores level at one a piece.
United secured the away goal in the 38th minute with Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s follow-up into the empty net after Marcus Rashford’s first time shot was parried by Anderlecht stopper Ruben.
A comfortable home fixture could have been secured but chances were squandered yet again by The Red Devils’ attackers, prompting public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.
Leander Dendoncker headed into the United net with the Belgian side’s first shot on target to retain some Anderlecht hope for the second leg.

Team News
Talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks set to return after stating ‘tiredness’ had affected him after the first leg on Thursday – he featured in the last 8 minutes off the bench against Chelsea on Sunday. His replacement Marcus Rashford was brilliant in that match and will give Mourinho much-desired options in attack.
Sergio Romero looks set to regain his spot as United’s Europa League goalkeeper.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata are all still ruled out with long-term injuries.

Anderlecht keeper Ruben is a doubt and 17-year-old Mile Svilar will be set to replace him if necessary.
The Purple and Whites made 6 changes for their 1-0 victory at Ostend on Sunday so the team will be mainly fresh.

Player to watch
Despite Manchester United’s turbulent season one player that can undoubtedly still come away with credit is Ander Herrera. The Basque midfielder was bought and used to be primarily a technically skilled and creative midfielder, but has evolved to showcase a diverse set of attributes and flourished in a more combative role under Mourinho. The man of the match performance in man-marking Chelsea star Eden Hazard and getting on the scoresheet too proved as much. A similarly effective showing on Thursday should see United through.

Buoyed by a performance labelled as a typical ‘Mourinho masterclass’ in a brilliant 2-0 victory over (not-so-anymore) champions-elect Chelsea on Sunday; United are massive favourites to brush aside the Belgian First Division A leaders and continue marching on into the Europa League last four.
Mourinho has a history of taking cup competitions seriously – as displayed in United’s EFL cup win – and will be extremely motivated to obtained his second Europa league (UEFA Cup) crown. He will also make sure the importance of doing so is not lost on his players on Thursday as (while sitting in 5th in the Premier League and not an impossibility to do so naturally) the Europa League still presents Manchester United’s best opportunity to regain Champions League football.
