Newcastle travel to South Wales this Friday to keep their hunt going for the Sky Bet Championship title. Rafa Benitez’ men secured promotion back to the Premier League earlier this week with a 4-1 win over Preston North End. They’ll be searching for another three points as they aim to chase down league leaders, Brighton and Hove Albion.

Cardiff are currently occupying 13th in the league standings, 14 points from the drop zone. Our horse racing preview comes from four meetings today, Doncaster. Sandown, Punchestown and Chepstow. Another weekend arrives and another feast of racing with the highlight being the Sandown card which will decide the outcome of the national hunt trainers title which at present looks to be going to Seven Barrows. Firstly, on to Friday and again some excellent racing to take on board.

 

15.20 Doncaster  – 188bet.co.uk Maiden Fillies Stakes (6f)

Godolphin again have another well represented filly on show in Desert Rain, the daughter of Invincible Spirit was beaten at odds on – on debut at Kempton Park three weeks ago when unable to real in a much fitter opponent.

I’ve watched the race a couple of times to see if she has the ability to come on for that debut run, her action looked short with a little tendency to hang slightly, but I would not be surprised to see her improve from that run and land this.

Two that could definitely mix it up against her is Richard Hannon’s Harbour Grey and Clive Cox’s Crafty Madam. The latter finished fourth on her only juvenile start at Leicester which has not been the best of maidens with only the one winner coming in from the batch. However, Harbour Grey could be the main danger to the selection.

She was behind a useful type in Cercie D’Or from the Gosden yard. The pair were clear of the third and she should come on for that run.

15.55 Doncaster – Best Odds Guaranteed At 188bet Handicap (0-90)

Rich and Famous was denied a win on debut last week on the blog, his second to Roger Varian’s Victory Angel should bring him on. but I do have reservations that he was not that straight forward and will probably take another run to get him spot on to record his first success.

Roger Varian has another nice-looking type in this with Ekhtiyaar who got off the mark at the second time of asking at Yarmourh. The son of Bated Breathe who was a useful sprinter in his time should be hard to beat now handicapping off a respected mark of 85, but again I think he could be vulnerable to the selection.

Holmswood also got off the mark at the second attempt when winning on the all-weather at Kempton, that form got franked yesterday when the third Ataaq hacked up at Beverley by seven lengths.

His opening mark now in Handicaps of 84 should see him go close. Another of interest is Johnson-Houghton’s Accidental Agent who notched up two wins as a juvenile at Chepstow and on his last run taking a twenty six field auction stakes race at Newmarket. He just might not get the cover he requires here in this smaller field.

Holmswood : 1pt each way @ 7/1 (BOG)

16.05 Sandown – Bet365.com Handicap (0-100)

A competitive sprint where we see Mark Johnston’s Queen in Waiting at the head of the market. She got off the mark at the second attempt on the all-weather at Chelmsford as a juvenile.

The transition went well when winning on season reappearance at Wolverhampton winning as liked when making all in a 0-85 handicap. This is a marginal step up in class and would probably have to set her own fractions in the race from the front end, but might find things tough to stay there.

Jumira Bridge was impressive when hacking up at Brighton two weeks ago and will make her handicap debut, the third Andalusite recently won a classified stakes race at Brighton easily.

Partitia could be anything for Sir Michael Stoute, she did herself justice as a juvenile notching up wins at Chester and Newbury and was not hardly done when fifth in pattern company at Ayr on her last run as a juvenile. I think she will need the run and even though some think stall 10 is a negative I actually think if she gets across early, she can go close under Moore.

Jumira Bridge : 2pt win @ 11/4 (BOG)

17.30 Punchestown – Betdaq Punchestown Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)

Vroum Vroum Mag will be looking to change her luck here after being surprisingly beaten in the OLBG Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham. With no Apples Jade here she has the chance of taking on the boys here in what looks an open renewal.

Henry de Bromheads Petit Mouchoir added this year’s Irish Champion Hurdle to his resume when beating a small field, but Nicholas Canyon was a faller that day when travelling well, you can see that when beating Uknowhatimeanharry by over four lengths, that form was reversed yesterday with the latter holding on to land the Irish Stayers equivalent by a nostril.

He has something to find with the selection this afternoon from Cheltenham’s Champion Hurdle in My Tent or Yours, he reminds me of Youmzain from the flat who finished runner up in the Arc, you wonder now at the age of ten if he can land a race like this. Personally, he owes connections nothing with four champion Hurdle runner up spots on his resume and I think he would be a welcoming winner this afternoon as he has the class to prevail.

Third in this last year when behind Vroum Vroum Mag, he does have to find a bit against the filly having to give her weight once more. You could not find fault when five lengths behind Buveur D’Air in the Aintree Hurdle who had already bested My Tent Or Yours at Cheltenham and increased that form. He’s just an unlucky type that seems to bump into world stars and has to settle for the bridesmaid spot on many occasions in his career. Even though he always finds one or two too good, at 6/1 he looks a solid each way bet to nothing with 1-2-3 on offer.

The definite danger though to all is Arctic Fire for Willie Mullins, with Ruby retained to ride Vroum Vroum Mag this is a big opportunity for Paul Townend to pick up this race. Runner up to the mighty Faugheen in 2015, he showed his potential when landing this year’s County Hurdle when holding on in a thrilling finish to just deny L’Ami’Serge by the narrowest margins.

Second to Faugheen again in the Irish renewal back in January he has definitely taken his chances with Faugheen absent and he looks the one to beat, but I would not put you off backing My Tent or Yours without the favourite or just each way as he will no doubt make his presence felt with a late run.

18.05 Punchestown – Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novices Hurdle (Grade 1)

I would be very surprised if my banker was turned over here in Finian’s Oscar. Colin Tizzard sent his star to Aintree when competing in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices Hurdle and boy was he impressive when winning by three lengths over Captain Forez who ran a blinder.

The ground looked good -good to soft yesterday which is not going to inconvenience him in the slightest, this will be the icing on the cake for the Potts if he hacks up here and rightly should.

Let’s Dance landed some sizeable bets when winning the Dawn Run at Cheltenham, back in fifth was Asthuria who has franked the form when he landed the 7.15 easily on the card last night. My only question is with only racing twelve days ago has this come far too soon?

This year’s Grade 1 Lawlor’s Hotel Novices Hurdle winner Death Duty was probably unlucky to get rid of Brian Cooper who for me has not shone this season at all. but he drops back to 20f today which should benefit his chances, Brian Cooper retains the ride for Gigginstown Stud.

I am finding it hard to get the selection beaten this evening, with the power in the saddle I actually think he will put these to the sword in good style.

18.40 Punchestown – Star Best For Racing Coverage Champion Hunters Chase (24.4f)

Edna Bolger’s prolific course winner On The Fringe is attempting to win this race for the fourth time, he was very below par at Aintree when pulling up in the Foxhunters, but overlooking that he has to be taken seriously once more, around 9/4 – 5/2 to land this looks generous enough.

Balnaslow was unlucky not to land this year’s Foxhunters at Aintree going behind by one and three quarter lengths to Dineur. There’s not much between him and On The Fringe from Cheltenham with just three parts of a length separating them. I would like to think that form can be reversed again.

One at a price here could be Declan Queally’s Minella For Value who is closely matched with On The Fringe and Balnsalow from their Cheltenham encounter. There is just a length between the three.

19.00 Chepstow – Dunraven Bowl Novices Hunter Chase (23.4)

Indian Leader represents Mickey Bowen who landed this year’s Foxhunters with Dineur and has another likeable type here. He is making his debut this afternoon around the chase circuit and was not disgraced on his only start in a bumper last season when finishing fifth at Fontwell over 17.4f, a big significant step up in trip. but from a trainer that seems to know how to produce them at this level.

Dangers look to come from Spencer moon and Moral Hazard. The latter is probably the least exposed runner in the race. Runner up on his race course debut at Worcester when trained by Rebecca Menzies, sold on and has been competing around the p2p circuit for Beverley Thomas.

A final appearance was seen at Taunton three weeks ago when finishing runner up over 23f, the jockey was Sarah Davies-Thomas who will ride Moral Hazard. Spencer Moon is 0-11 and has not looked like a win is imminent, has failed to impress on both starts at the Welsh track which included last of seven last time out.

19.35 Chepstow – Sun Trade Windows Handicap Chase (0-100)

Phangio has been very frustrating to back with the two times I have put the Matt Shepperd runner forward. He has looked like winning then finds nothing off the bridle, considering he has been double figure prices on his past four runs, they must know something as he has been put in as the 2/1 favourite to land this race.

Now he is a course and distance winner when landing a 0-115 handicap chase last November, also on his return to the course, ran well again when runner up in a 0-105 over course and distance. This is another drop in class which obviously is getting his big chance of notching up his second career win if could enough.

Charlie Mon was giving 2lb to Phangio last time for a short head defeat, they meet on the same terms, but I would like to think Phangio can hold the form now young Stan Shepperd is back on board.

The Manchester Derby has added importance as both the red and the blue of the city contest for a Champions League place.

Both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are in their first season as managers of their respective clubs and have experienced underwhelming campaigns thus far.

Beaten 2-1 in extra-time in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal; City will now end the season trophy-less – this will be the first time a team managed by Guardiola will have done so. There were massive expectations when the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager came to the club but after a strong start, winning the first 10 games in all competitions, inconsistency has been costly.

Manchester United are currently on a 23 game unbeaten streak in the league and avoiding defeat will equal the club’s record of 24. Despite this; United’s 2016/17 has been blighted by notorious home draws. Mourinho’s side have claimed silverware though; the Portuguese manager’s fourth EFL Cup after defeating Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling final. United are also still competing in the Europa League with a semi-final clash against Spanish outfit Celta Vigo next week and could claim a Champions League spot through the avenue of winning the tournament.

Chelsea and Spurs are in a seemingly two-horse race for the title, leaving any two from City, Liverpool, United and Arsenal to battle for the remaining Champions League places.

The Red Devils are currently in 5th place on 63 points, a point behind City in 4th place and three behind Liverpool in 3rd – however both Manchester sides have played 32 games, two less than the Merseysiders. Arsenal are further back in 7th but with three games in hand on 6th place Everton and are still expected to challenge until the end.

This fixture last year was decided by a well-taken Marcus Rashford goal as the Red Devils came away with the spoils in a 1-0 victory. This season the forward hasn’t quite reached the same heights in terms of goal-scoring but the England international is a constant threat with his pace, direct play and ability to glide past opposition defenders. In the 2-0 victory over Chelsea recently; Rashford played brilliantly – capping his performance with a goal and more than justified Mourinho’s faith in starting him. More of the same will have the City defence fearful.

The Belgian central defender is a captain who leads by example on the pitch and irreplaceable when not plagued by unfortunate injuries. He has a mixed history against City’s local rivals, involving everything from scoring to being sent off – but after his latest return from injury is undoubtedly a key player in repressing United attacks and dragging City over the line in a battle.

Manchester City are fearful that star man Sergio Aguero will be unavailable after being substituted with a knock in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday after opening the scoring. David Silva who is pivotal for City, was also substituted in that same match and is a doubt. John Stones, Fernandinho, and Bacary Sagna are all battling for fitness too. The positive news is that Gabriel Jesus will be looking for his first Premier League appearance since breaking a bone in his foot after a hurricane start to life in English football.

Paul Pogba is a doubt after being forced off in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Burnley. Both Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be big misses after United confirmed the pair are out for the season with knee ligament damage. Additionally, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata are all still out with their respective long-term injuries.

The night will see Michael Van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis play twice, with Mighty Mike looking to continue his red-hot form after defeating fellow countryman, Raymond van Barneveld, 7-2 last week.

Adrian Lewis will be looking to bounce back after an inconsistent run of form. The power hitting of these two always creates a fast-paced, entertaining match of darts. The two drew earlier in the Premier League campaign, however more is at stake in this match. Van Gerwen is heavy favourite for this match-up; as he always is however Lewis is capable of challenging van Gerwen. A lot could be riding on this match, with results earlier in the night possibly affecting league positions. Both van Gerwen and Lewis are renowned for their high checkout scoring and so expect no different this time around.

Horse Racing Preview – Perth, Beverley, Punchestown and Market Rasen – 27th April 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Beverley, Perth, Punchestown and Market Rasen. Two nice winning favourites gave the blog two more winners for the week. I was not disappointed with Someday’s run as to be fair, looked in need of the outing yesterday after missing Cheltenham, also pulled very hard throughout a race that was definitely not run to suit.

 

13.40 Beverley – Westwood Handicap (0-75) (5f)

Michael Easterby’s handicappers have been in fine fettle this season, the yards entry here is Bosham. The course and distance winner won here on this card last year off a mark of 73, going on to run poorly at Haydock when stepped into 0-85 company.

Over the past five months he has been competing on the all-weather which has seen no signs of a win due soon, but deserved respect now back on turf and course. Lucky Beggar looked to have found a new lease of life when runner up at Redcar last week.

Despite a useful sprinter on his day, it’s just off putting that his last win came almost three years ago when winning a 0-110 at Newbury, will have to build on his recent second to thrive here as on his main form he is way ahead of the handicap.

One I am willing to have a small play on is John Wainwright’s Tick the Boxes, who is also another that has a declined turf form of 1-11 which stretches back three years. If he could actually put his all-weather form to turf he would not be entered in this category.

Only just managed to hold on in a claimer at Gosforth park two runs back and failed to follow up at Southwell two weeks later when beaten a head. It’s just one of those selections that should be entering equations around these poor races.

14.00 Perth – Murrayshall Hotel & Golf Courses Novices Hurdle (16.2f)

Nicky Henderson looks on the brink of landing the trainers title over the next week and saddles a hot pot here in Top Ville Ben who was looking to make it 3/4 over hurdles when coming to grief at Chepstow under today’s pilot.

His last two runs have seen him out, I am not really convinced he will handle Perth, looking vulnerable and a tendency to make mistakes he could be worth taking him on with James Moffatt’s Golden Town. The once Godolphin trained flat performer commanded a reasonably winning mark of 96 on the turf.

Since joining Moffatt’s set up I think he has done himself justice with some creditable efforts at Musselburgh, being placed on two occasions. They became bold with him when having a crack at Graded level at Haydock in a Supreme trial.

They must think a lot of him to even consider they would have run him in the Supreme Hurdle if he had not pulled up at Haydock, but he was a 100/1 shot that day so optimistic more than positive. I can’t see why he won’t give another good account of himself here even though taking on a well backed Henderson hotpot who does make mistakes.

Golden Town : 1pt each way @ 9/2 (BOG)

15.05 Perth – Lindsay’s  Handicap Hurdle (0-100)

Grand National winning jockey Derek Fox rides my selection in the 3.05 on Mash Potato. The ex Michael Dods inmate and now with Noel Kelly in Ireland, has taken his time to get in front between the flags, almost 21 months, but did it nicely when winning with something in hand at Uttoxeter when beating better graded horses.

His last run probably brought him up into the mid nineties, but the handicapper has been lenient enough to assess him off 89 this afternoon which really should be exploiting. Sports Barrow has to be feared the most now dropping back in trip. Paddy Brennan takes the mount for Colin McBratney.

Mash Potato : 2pt win @ 4/1 (BOG)

15.35 Perth  – Congratulations to Brian Hughes From Stobart Chase (Novices Limited Handicap)

Would it not be ironic if Brian Hughes won this on Malcolm Jefferson’s Spiculas. The eight-year-old missed all of 2015 and most of 2016 through injury, but returned after a 15 month break when finishing second in a 0-120.

Beaten favourite on his next two runs around 0-120 class made you wonder if the handicapper had already managed to grip him. He bumped into my selection for this race, Ryalex, who he beat to one and three quarter lengths when conceding over a stone at the weights.

Spiculas will have to concede another two pound which gives Ryalex a chance to get closer than their Carlisle encounter. The selection was runner on the card 12 months ago beaten fourteen lengths in a maiden contest under the same sponsors, the drying ground should help his cause this afternoon.

18.40 Punchestown – Ryanair Novice Chase (Grade 1) (16f)

I have been trying to get this Willie Mullins Great Field beaten this evening. The useful French hurdler made his debut for the new surroundings when winning the Foxrock Cup at Lepoardstown when defeating Draco of Aiden O’Brien’s.

Sent straight to the Cheltenham festival last season which saw him pull up in the County Hurdle. Since taken chasing he has thrived no end which included landing a Listed chase at Thurles last month. With only two defeats in his career it looks like he just has to turn up and he wins, but he is prone to jumping errors under pressure and I am hoping Edna Bolgers Ballyoisin can take him on.

He is another that tends to make unnecessary jumping errors which has seen him fail twice in a short career which included behind Bell D’Arca in the Grade 3 Flyingbolt Novice Chase. I actually thought if for not of the error he would have gone very close to win the race. Jumping is the name of the game and if both Ballyoisin and Great Field fail to put in a solid round of jumping Gordon Elliott’s Bell D’Arca will be there to pick up the pieces.

20.00 Market Rasen – 32Red On The App Store Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat (16.6f)

It will be interesting to see how well the Dunguib related Peculiar Places goes on debut for Irish trainer Ronald O’Leary. A 35,000 purchase as a three-year-old has landed on O’Leary’s yard.

Nicely bred by Presenting out of Blue Louisiana is deservedly respected this afternoon, Tom Scudamore has been booked which is eye-catching in itself.

Infinite Sun is another that has to be market checked after outclassed in a Listed bumper at Newbury which saw fifth place finisher champion bumper runner Western Ryder reversing the course and distance win of Infinite Sun.

The third Sneaky Feeling has won twice over hurdles and finished eighth in a Graded 2 hurdles race at the January Cheltenham meeting. I would expect another big return to the course that saw him win first time under rules.

David Elsworth’s Country’n’Western has not shown himself for eighteen months when winning what looked a reasonable bumper at Carlisle. In fact, he humiliated his opposition by fifteen lengths and has elected to run here over tomorrow’s Perth bumper.

It’s a tough one with Infinite Sun returning to a course he scored his first success, Country’n’Western has to be taken on trust that Elsworth has him spot on this afternoon for a race course re-appearance after 18 months, Peculiar Places is very interesting especially with the booking of Tom Scudamore who just swings my decision.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham Hotspur – Match Preview – 26th April 2017

Following a disappointing weekend, Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Selhurst Park to take on a recently-very dangerous Crystal Palace team on Wednesday evening. No team in the Premier League is in better form than Tottenham, winners of their last seven league games, who will be looking to keep their diminishing title hopes alive against a Crystal Palace side that has beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in the month of April to pull 7 points above Swansea in the final relegation position. Without doubt, Palace will be looking to add to their impressive month and to avenge Spurs’ 1-0 win at White Hart lane in August.

 

Team News

Both teams come into the match without much news on the injury-front. Tottenham left back Danny Rose has resumed first-team training but is unlikely to feature, while Harry Winks, Erik Lamela are unavailable for the rest of the season. Sporadically-used substitutes Cameron Carter-Vickers and Michel Vorm are also unavailable for Spurs. Palace will be without centre back James Tompkins who was injured during Sunday’s game against Liverpool and he may miss the rest of the season, but will welcome back defender Mamadou Sakho who missed the Liverpool game against his parent club.

Sam Allardyce will also be in the unpleasant position of trying to balance his squad for the midweek game as on Saturday, The Eagles take on Burnley and having lost four of their six games playing on four or less days’ rest, changes could be prominent as Allardyce has hinted that there could well be big changes from the squad that beat Liverpool on Sunday. This would be welcoming news to Pochettino and Tottenham.

Players to Watch

Crystal Palace have not scored a league goal against Tottenham since 2015, but Christian Benteke has 3 in his last 2 games and will certainly be looking to add to that form on Wednesday against a very stingy Tottenham back-3 that have given up the fewest goals in the Premier league this season. Benteke may also be looking to justify his manager’s comments this week regarding Allardyce’s unwillingness to swap Benteke for Spur’s striker Harry Kane. Additionally, former Spur’s winger Andros Townsend could also look to strike a blow against his former club’s title chances after netting earlier this month against Arsenal.

After being curiously dropped for the FA Cup Semifinal, Kyle Walker is expected to return to the starting eleven against Crystal Palace. Walker has performed outstandingly this season, fully deserving being named in the PFA Team of the Year this week. look for him to test the patchy Crystal Palace defence with his lightning-fast runs and accurate crosses.

Our horse racing preview comes from Punchestown and Epsom Downs today. Some very disappointing selections yesterday that basically just never turned up. Hopefully we can remedy that this afternoon.

 

15.15 Epsom – Investec Corporate Banking Great Metropolitan Handicap (10.1f) (0-95)

These sharp tracks such as Chester and Epsom have to be mastered and for me one of the top jockeys that has gained that experience is Franny Norton who rides Mark Johnston’s Galapiat who has been moved from Andre Fabre’s at Chantilly to his new surroundings.

His first run for the new yard came at Leicester when hacking up by five lengths in a 0-90 over an index of 11.7f three weeks ago. It is something to definitely build on from the son of Galileo.

Main dangers look to come from the in form Alan King yard with William Hunter who notched up three wins last season off marks of 74, 77 and 82. Now 5lb higher he has failed to show the promise which included being beaten at Kempton when only finishing eighth in a 0-105, a good drop in class he deserves to be involved.

GALAPIAT : 2pt win @ 7/4 (BOG)

16.25 Epsom – Investec Foreign Exchange Maiden Stakes (8.4f)

The fact that Frankie Dettori prefers Richard Hannon’s Bahar over Ed Dunlop’s Amarsen could be a tip in itself. The son of First Defence made a very eye catching re-appearance when third on the all-weather at Chelmsford at the beginning of the month going behind by just over four lengths.

The front two Bless Him and Highland Cradle where improver’s so on paper he has to come into the equation on his second start of the new campaign.

Godolphin have surprisingly turned a corner this year with all of their juveniles and transition horses improving significantly. Their entry here, Leader’s Legacy, ran sixth on his debut at Sandown when behind Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes winner Best of Days, the runner up Wahash also ran well on his first run back at Newmarket finishing fourth when behind the smart Middle Kingdom.

The War Front colt has no pattern engagements on his future calender, which reflects that they have something here, but just want to see how good he is on his transition run.

16.55 Punchestown – Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (24f)

William Mullins yard have supposedly turned a corner in recent weeks and are well represented here with Penhill, Al Boum Photo and Tin Soldier. On paper Penhill is the likely one to Concentrate on with Ruby Walsh choosing over the other two.

The Albert Bartlett winner was very impressive when winning the Grade 1 event last month. The ex Luca Cumani flat performer will take his chance here instead of his Champion Novice Hurdle engagement over a shorter trip.

His biggest adversary is Patrick Kelly’s Pertempts winner Presenting Percy who so impressive when coming from last to first to land the Listed event. Davy Russell reclaims for the race which has been franked this week with The Toured Man winning.

Out of the pair Penhill for me is open to much more improvement over Presenting Percy who despite coming into the top level I can’t see him being a match for Mullins entry here.

18.00 Punchestown – Racing Post Champing I.N.H. Flat (Grade 1)

The Cheltenham Champion bumper winner will try and double up this afternoon. Gordon Elliott’s Fayonagh won with plenty in hand when flashing home to take the race by one and three quarter lengths with Carter McKay a long way back in the field. I would be shocked if Mullins’ runner could get even close giving 5lb to Fayonagh.

One I backed ante-post for Cheltenham was Jessica Harrington’s Someday who was declared a non-runner and comes here for a yard that are literally flying in all codes. His second on debut over course and distance puts him right among the pigeons here, even his win at Leopardstown was good enough to go close, I really like his chances here despite missing a prep run to get involved.
