Horse Racing Preview Aintree Festival Grand National Day 8th April 2017

Horse Racing Preview – Aintree Festival (Grand National Day)

Our horse racing preview comes from the Aintree Festival on Grand National Day. It was pleasant to eventually get a nice winner with Fox Norton yesterday, its not been an easy past two weeks leading up to the festival with the winners being limited, but hopefully we get a bit better run of the green this afternoon on the selection front. The first race on the card would probably scare most punters, twenty two runner handicaps over three miles is not the best of races to fathom out.

Aintree Festival  1.45pm – Gaskells Handicap Hurdle

We start off the day with exactly that, most of these had already competed at the Cheltenham festival and if we were to go on that form I would prefer to look around the mid race finishers. Paul Nicholl’s Zarkandar will have to give weight all round here, the last winner to do so was back in 2012 when Cape Tribulation carried the agonizing weight of 11st 12lb to victory. This has has only been done once since 2000, even though it is not an impossible task I just think he is a bit long in the tooth these days and better off around smaller fields.

Dan Skelton’s No Hassle Hoff is definitely a worthy favourite since The Worlds End went on to win the Sefton Novices Hurdle yesterday. He was seriously put in his place that day when nine lengths off the winner.T he third Ballyarthur has ran creditably again when finishing runner up at Haydock, the fourth Progress Drive has also franked the form when winning at Ayr last month.

The five year old son of Craigsteel should be spot on off the back of both his runs this year in graded company. The one solid negative is that there has only been two winning favourites over the past sixteen years and only one five year old has managed to succeed, even though its only a trend, trends are here to be broken but even though he gets plenty of weight I will over look him once more.

I thought No Comment ran well in the Martin Pipe when finishing seventh to Champagne Classic, even though he was beaten twelve lengths, it does not reflect that he had no passage through off of the turn. He has had the benefit of a run around Aintree when second in a maiden hurdle over 20f. Geraghty had to miss the Cheltenham festival and presently sits on the top jockey rostrum here at Aintree after two days. I would call it compensation time as he probably would have been lucky at Cheltenham and his ride here for Philip Hobbs looks the one to beat.

What a Season Fergal O’Brien is having and saddles here Barney Dwan who was just denied in the Pertemps when Presenting Percy came with a perfect timed challenge to land the race in good style. He will have to concede an extra 5lb to The Tourard Man this time around who stayed on to finish a good fourth, six and a half lengths off Barney Dwan, but even so I would be surprised to see that form get overturned this afternoon. I do have a concern though that this is not his trip and its probably on the threshold of his better index which I feel is around 19f, just a bit too far for me.

Desert Cry was seen here last Spring when beaten over course and distance by just over nine lengths, but since then he has racked up three wins which has seen him raised to a mark of 150, 25lb since just before Christmas. His win last time came in a 0-140 handicap at Ayr on heavy ground and with his 10lb penalty he could be very vulnerable on this quicker ground. For Good Measure was behind both The Tourard Man and Barney Dwan last month and realistically he looks up against it to reverse the form at the weights.

No Comment : 2pt each way @ 10/1 (BOG)

Aintree Festival 2.25pm – Mersey Novice’s Hurdle

We move swiftly on to the 2.25 and an excellent Mersey’s Novice’s Hurdle renewal which has attracted a very strong field. I am not convinced that the ground will not be soft enough for Alan King’s Messire Des Obeaux this afternoon, with most of his hurdles form coming on softer ground, you cannot take away that he ran a blinder in the Neptune.  But the ground and trip saw him out on the day and once more he will be tackling quicker conditions which brings me to over look him. On the other hand Lough Derg Spirit who represents leading trainer Nicky Henderson who also has the interesting Cultivator in the race could go well.

The former won a shade easily at Musselburgh despite only two and a half lengths between them at the line. Pending how he runs here he will return to Scotland later in the month to compete in the Scottish Champion Hurdle where he could be a warm order. One I am interested in here is Henderson”s second string which see’s Barry Geraghty get back on him for the first time since his bumper win two seasons ago. He gained his first success at Ascot when winning a Novices hurdle over 19.8f when beating Paul Nicholl’s Bagad Bihoue who was coming off  the back of a good win at Wincanton. He went on to run well in the Grade 2 NIM Winter Hurdle at Sandown park when he finished just under three lengths behind Messire Des Obeaux.

He was beaten once again by Messire Des Obeaux when they met in the Challows Novices Hurdle at Newbury on New Years Eve going behind by a bigger margin of twenty four lengths. He was not convincing next time out at Kempton Park last month when just holding off Just Before Dawn. I would like to think he could improve more than he has shown, with Geraghty booked to ride you could probably not write him off that easily. But realistically he would have to seriously step up to overturn some good novices in this race.

Two more that come into the equation is Ben Pauling’s Le Breuil and man of the moment ColIn Tizzard’s Finian’s Oscar. The former represents a yard I have enjoyed following over the past two seasons, watching Barters Hill coming through the ranks and the likes of Willoughby Court landing the Neptune when beating the hugely fancied Neon Wolf, which we saw Messire Des Obeaux back in a good third. Le Breuil is coming off the back of comfortable wins at Sedgefield and Newbury when beating Benatar of Gary Moore’s by nine lengths. They meet again and I would like to think that the form could be reversed. He is a talented gelding, but its the ground concerns I have with him this afternoon.

Finally, we come to the selection in Colin Tizzard’s Finian’s Oscar. I actually tipped him up when he was supposed to run at last month’s festival, but Tizzard has held on to him and bypassed to bring him here on a flatter and quicker course. The unbeaten son of Oscar won the Grade 2 Tolworth Novices Hurdle on his second start when winning by five lengths. It was not the strongest of races that has already been documented, but I actually thought his win at Exeter in a Listed event was spot on. He was entitled to win at with a solid round of jumping, smooth as you like and now turns up here to attempt to keep his 100% record intact and I think he can.

Finian’s Oscar : 3pt Win @ 7/2 (BOG)

Aintree Festival 4.20pm – The Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle

The next race I want to move on to is the 4.20 The Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle. Now Despite Colin Tizzard having a cracking second day, I am going to stick to his stable jockey here when Robbie Power gets up on Jessica Harrington’s Supasundae. A horse i have followed ever since he won a Listed bumper at Ascot three seasons ago. I really fancied him to win the Champion Bumper that year, but he probably bumped into one of the strongest fields that year with the likes of Yanworth, Moon Racer, Modus and Bellshill in the race, horses that went on to make it over hurdles. The following year I had already backed him to land the Supreme and he did himself justice in again, one of the strongest supreme’s for a while, which saw the winner Altior, Buveur D’Air, Tombstone, Min, North Hill Harvey and Petit Mouchoir in the race.

After his run at the Punchestown festival when again he disappointed, he made his re-appearance when failing to show any old sparkle trailing in a disappointing eighth in handicap company. He stayed around handicap company and got an average win at Punchestown on new years eve and followed that up when runner up to Sutton Place in the Grade 3 Limestone Lad Hurdle. Beaten again by Sutton Place a month later at Naas, and I was starting to give up on this talented seven year old.

Then it all paid off, the patience all the training came into one when he went away under Robbie Power to land the Coral Cup, had they found a key to him now he had been stepped up in trip. He will tackle three miles for the first time, I think he will see out the trip, has a good turn of foot and the step up in the Coral Cup worked. He’s a hold up performer and the race with a little pace would set him up nicely coming home in front hopefully.

The thing is they all have to beat Yanworth, Alan King’s talented seven year old should relish this stronger, flatter course. He never looked right from a long way out in the Champion Hurdle, in fact it was a route I would never have gone, but I am not the owner or trainer. This is the first time he has been out this late of the season, he usually finishes up at last month’s festival and a long summer break is on the card, but they must fancy their chances bringing him here, and why not, you have to be in it to win it. I would not be at all surprised to see a big run form Ptit Zig in this.

Paul Nicholl’s has won this race four times, but nothing over the past four renewals which has seen Nicky Henderson land the race twice in the past three years. This is a big chance for Nicholl’s to cut into that deficit for the trainers’ title and one that can get him close here is Ptit Zig. Every time he has competed in the Cleeve Hurdle he has come out and produced a season’s best. He has something to find with Cole Harden from their Cleeve Hurdle encounter, but this year he has not been given a hard time of it, they bypassed France and Cheltenham last month, this just might be a chuck in effect or a very shrewd piece of training.

Supasundae : 2pt Win @ 13/2 (BOG)

Ptit Zig : 1/2pt each way @ 20/1 (BOG)

West Ham v Swansea Match Preview - Saturday 8th April 2017 3PM - FA Premier League, Olympic Stadium, London
West Ham v Swansea Match Preview – Saturday 8th April 2017 3PM – FA Premier League, Olympic Stadium, London

At the beginning of the season there wouldn’t have been a few billing this game as a massive one – but that is exactly what West Ham v Swansea is.

The battle to avoid relegation is incredibly tight; with West Ham being dragged into it over the past month.

Just 5 points separate relegation-zone Swansea who lie in 18th place on 28 points and West Ham in 15th place on 33 points. In the wider context of the league table, there are only 9 points between Southampton who are in 9th and the Swans.

Both teams are in woeful form; after the initial resurgence in reaction to the appointment of Paul Clement, Swansea have lost at relegation rivals Hull and Bournemouth whilst drawing with Middlesbrough and losing again to Spurs in heart-breaking fashion at home.

Pair that with West Ham’s 5 consecutive losses – their worst run since 2010/11 in a season that they were relegated – and the end product is a match where both teams desperately need the win.

West Ham manager, Slaven Billic has felt the pressure as a result of this form – forcing the owners of the club to publicly give their vote of confidence to the Croatian manager.

Both Crystal Palace and Hull will be playing away to Arsenal and Manchester City respectively bringing an opportunity for both sides in todays match preview to either gain ground or pull away from their relegation rivals.

Both teams will be looking to avenge this fixture where the Swans claimed a huge scalp in a surprise 4-1 victory in the penultimate game from last season at The Boleyn Ground and in the reverse fixture this season, The Irons tore Swansea apart at The Liberty Stadium by the same score-line on Boxing Day.

Injury News

West Ham’s star men Michael Antonio and Andy Carroll are both set to return to the squad despite leaving the pitch injured and ill respectively in the Hammers last game which ended in a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal.

However, the Hammers will be without key defenders Aaron Cresswell and Winston Reid for the vital clash. Angelo Ogbonna and Pedro Obiang are both also ruled out.

Swansea City also have injury concerns. Mainly whether top scorer and leading frontman Fernando Llorente will be passed fit, which is 50/50 at the moment. Swansea have only recorded a solitary point in the games where he has not featured (including and since going off injured in the first half against Hull).

Kyle Naughton also looks set to miss out after obtaining a hamstring injury in the defeat against Spurs on Wednesday night – which could see makeshift right back Leroy Fer deployed there again due to Angel Rangel’s long-term injury.

Lukasz Fabianski will be subject to a late fitness test after the injury he also picked up at the Liberty on Wednesday; but refused to be substituted for which he might have aggravated any knock further.

Players to Watch

As mentioned above, West Ham’s two best players are the returning Antonio and Carroll. The former’s unpredictability of movement and dribbling causes defensive instability and is The Hammers’ top scorer this season with 9 goals and an additional three assists.

Carroll has been his usual destructive self when fit this campaign; with an impressive return of 7 goals from just 14 starts (and three substitute appearances). He offers more than just his infamous aerial prowess – proven by his phenomenal scissor kick this season against fellow relegation strugglers Crystal Palace. Buoyed by a fantastic record against the Swans – five goals and three assists in six Premier League appearances. Expect the English bulldozer to have a say come game-time.

Key-Men: Llorente & Sigurdsson for Swansea. Photo: BBC Sport

Key-Men: Llorente & Sigurdsson for Swansea. Photo: BBC Sport

The Swans have a much stronger chance of winning when star man Gylfi Sigurdsson is on form – the Iceland international has a sensational output of 9 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League this season. Only Emil Forsberg of RB Leipzig has more assists than the attacking midfielder in Europe’s top five leagues; setting up more goals than players such as Ronaldo, Messi, Griezmann, Bale, Neymar and more.

A lot will rest on Fernando Llorente’s fitness for the South Welsh side; undoubtedly a different prospect as a team when the World Cup winning striker is leading the line. Clement’s outfit deliver a lot of balls into the box and need an outlet who can get on the end of those crosses or effectively play with his back to goal. 11 goals in his first season in England is an extremely respectable tally and Swansea fans will be hoping his return to the side can also signify a return to being amongst the goals.

West Ham have only won once in their last six home Premier League matches and Swansea have lost their last four consecutive four away games (never lost five in a row in the PL) – and with both defences unable to hold out for a victory at present – the value punt could well be with a 1-1 draw.

Taws has a great chance today to notch a win for David Pipe. The mare has been running well on the flat and has been placed 3 out of 4 times under National Hunt rules.

Master Burbidge won his last 2 starts over hurdles and comes in to today’s race off an unchanged mark. Will be hard to beat if handles chasing for Neil Mullholland.

Horse Racing Preview Aintree Ladies Day 7th April 2017

Aintree 14.20 – Crabbies Top Novices Hurdle (Grade 1)

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Aintree Festival on Ladies Day. It is starting to look as if Nicky Henderson has too much fire power going into this week to not land this year’s trainer’s title and is very well represented here with River Wylde.

The Grade 2 Dovecote Novices winner ran a cracker to finish third in this year’s Supreme at Cheltenham behind Labaik and the well regarded Melon. This galloping and flat track should see him come on again and looks hard to beat.

Main dangers look to come from the Jefferson yard with the smart Mount News who won the Grade 2 Kelso Novices by forty nine lengths. His only decent run came at Wetherby when just denied. He has bags of potential but will have to find something to beat River Wylde this afternoon.

Best of the rest looks to be Moon Racer who was pitched in the Champion Hurdle instead of taking the Supreme route and if bouncing back, he has serious claims with his good turn of foot.

River Wylde : 2pt win @ 11/4 (BOG)

Aintree 15.25 – JLT Melling Chase (Grade 1)

I was quite surprised to see Fox Norton being turned over in the Queen Mother at Cheltenham when runner up to Special Tiara who basically ran them into the ground.

The Colin Tizzard seven year old should be making amends this time around on this quick flat track. He has a good traveling engine and if able to dictate matters from the front he should fend of all challenges to land a well deserved prize.

Dangers look to come from Uxizandre who’s second to Un De Sceaux at Cheltenham looks really good form considering coming off a two year lay off and would not discount the Manifesto winner from two seasons ago.

Fox Norton : 2pts win @ 10/3 (BOG)

Aintree 17.15 – Weatherbys Private Bank Standard open NH Flat (Grade 2)

We see a few that make a re-appearance from the Cheltenham champion bumper this afternoon, notably Western Ryder who finished fifth that day, just one and half lengths behind Claimantakinforgan who finished third.

The Warren Greatrex’s trained son of Westerner would have to come into the equation from his listed win at Ascot this year, if producing that and has come on from Cheltenham he would have to go extremely close. Claimantakinforgan surprised me how powerfully he ran on in the Cheltenham bumper and even his two and a half lengths behind Black Ops at Doncaster when giving 7lb to the winner on that occasion.

He meets Black Ops on far better terms this time around and really should be using that advantage at the weights. Black Ops was a very expensive purchase and will have to give weight back to the selection here.

If the Cap Fits represents Harry Fry, the unbeaten five year old recorded two good wins at Plumpton and Taunton and still looks on the upgrade, he has to be feared if handling the course.

Claimantakinforgan : 2pt Win @ 7/2 (BOG)

Notes

Extra Mile has her first run for Saeed bin Suroor with Jim Crowley on board. The filly is a half sister to the mighty Frankel and has an entry in the 1000 Guineas. The yard are in great form and any danger would be the the Sir Michael Stoute trained filly Interweave who has finished 2nd in all previous 3 races.

Fern Owl has won over course and distance on the fibresand on his last two starts. Raised 4lb this time which will make life a little harder but the gelding looks to be able to head his rivals in the race with Silver Quay looking to be the possible danger.

Horse Racing Preview Wincanton Carlisle april 5th 2017

Horse Racing Preview – Wincanton and Carlisle – 5th April 2017

13.50 Wincanton

Today’s Horse Racing Preview includes 3 from Wincanton and 1 from Carlisle.

This looks like another opportunity for Gary Moore’s Mr Fickle to win again this afternoon. His eleven length demolition of strong opposition at Plumpton eight days ago in a 0-125 Handicap has seriously gone un-noticed by the handicapper. Winning off a mark of 107 he gets a very lenient 7lb rise for beating adversaries that were rated 13lb and 15lb higher. Steps back up in trip this afternoon and was beaten off a mark of 118 last season over this trip, but if the ground is still coming up on the quick side he has to be respected with the visor still implicated.

Nigel Twiston-Davies Gulshanigans looks the obvious danger. With two runner up spots this year at Ludlow he has to come into the equation. He has not been beaten far on his past two runs and will relish if the ground comes up on the softer side. Another that has the potential of mixing it up is the Philip Hobbs trained Lapalala who is 0-7 over hurdles and was seen finishing fourth over 19.8f around Wincanton two runs back. She has not been seen since finishing fourth on Boxing day at Fontwell a similar index, she will have to step up to make an impact once more.

Mr Fickle : 2pt Win @ 2/1 (BOG)

14.20 Wincanton

Paul Nicholls is still trailing Nicky Henderson in the trainer’s title by approximately £77000 and will be looking for Aintree to cut into the deficit. The second race on the card could bring him a little closer when he saddles Lou Vert. He has improved slowly from both his runs this year since diverting to the larger obstacles. His second at Taunton last time sets him up nicely off his current mark of 117 and now stepping up in trip. He would prefer the quicker ground this afternoon and should record his first National Hunt win under jockey Sam Twiston-Davies’ guidance.

The obvious dangers look to be Nick Mitchell’s Dance Floor King and Alan King’s McCabe Creek. The former has a wealth of experience around the chasing ranks which included a good second over course and distance back in February when behind Bishop’s Court, who did not sustain that form when finishing last at Sedgefield on probably unsuitable ground. He followed up with a good second at Sandown last month when five lengths behind Morning Reggie in a far better race than this, he deserves respect but the trainer is having a quiet spell with stats of 1-40 which is a concern.

McCabe Creek is the interesting one. The first season chaser went backwards when stepped up to 21.4f last time out at Market Rasen beaten twenty two lengths in a 0-135 contest. This is a more convenient drop in class, but has to give significant weight all round. Chris Gordon’s entry Comeonginger was running off a 16lb higher mark this time last year, and has won off a mark of 120 two seasons ago. Now off 108 he has dropped significantly on a serious winning mark, but the jockey is on a serious cold run 1-60, no confidence for me despite getting weight all round.

Lou Vert : 2pt Win @ 5/2 (BOG)

16.25 Wincanton

Both Toby Lerone and Mon Parrian have established themselves to be well equipped chasers and should be the two to concentrate on. The latter represents Paul Nicholl’s who is 1-3 this year around this sphere. His win two runs back at Fontwell probably flattered him a bit when beating a low grade bunch of individuals. He was put in his place by Poole Master next time at Warwick going behind by two and three quarter lengths when giving six pound to the eventual winner, so on paper the result was fair. He will get just the 2lb from Toby Lerone this afternoon which I feel will not be enough to defeat the inform Dan Skelton ten year old.

Toby Lerone has been relishing the Hunter Chase circuit and is 2/3 this year with his defeat coming over a much shorter trip which looked excusable. He was stepped back up to 24.5f at Towcester when beating Jerpeck by six lengths who was lacking in experience so he could be a good yardstick victory. He gets the well accomplished p2p jockey Sam Davies-Thompson on board this afternoon who is 7-20 (35%) which has included five of his last six rides as winners.

Toby Lerone : 3pt Win @ 7/4 (BOG)

16.35 Carlisle

An average bumper to finish off what looked a poor card at Carlisle this afternoon, the selection here comes in Anthony Honeyball’s Nocturnal Myth. The trainer is no stranger with winners around this sphere, his last runner was a bumper winner four days ago and Nocturnal Myth can give the inform trainer another winner. He is by Midnight Legend out of the double chase winning mare Gan On. He should be wound up and fit to go for a trainer who is 8-20 (40%) with 3/4 of his last bumper runners bringing home the bacon this year.

Nigel Hawke has sent two bumper runners out this afternoon, one at Wincanton and the other here in Ouro Branco. The course and distance winner last time won easily by eighteen lengths in a small low grade field, it was a flattering performance in my opinion and coming up against much stiffer opposition here he could find things a bit tougher. Kerry Lee’s Destined To Shine left his poor debut behind him when coming out on top at Towcester by four lengths, but it is a race that is not showing any promise.

Nocturnal Myth : 2pt Win @ 4/1 (BOG)
