La Liga 2017/2018 – Opening Day Preview

La Liga 2017/2018 – Opening Day Preview – La Liga is back! After two enthralling Spanish Super Cup games to whet your appetite, this weekend sees the return of the Spanish league. After comfortably beating Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate to lift the Super cup, Real Madrid are favourites to retain their La Liga crown. In the preview, we take a look at the Top 4 of La Liga from last season.

Sunday 9.15pm – Deportivo La Coruna V Real Madrid

The reigning European and league champions kick off their campaign away from home. Madrid will be without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo after he picked up a five-match ban in the Super Cup. The Portuguese talisman has already served one of those games, so will miss Real’s opening four matches of the season.

One man however who has stepped up is Marco Asensio. The Spanish playmaker has attracted huge interest from all over Europe, with some incredible performances and goals. At the tender age of just 21, Asensio is already beginning to look like the natural heir to Ronaldo’s throne, and I expect another big season for the Madrid youngster. Coupled with the fantastic performances of Isco, and not to mention Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, Madrid will not be short of options in attacking areas, even without Ronaldo.

Last season, Deportivo finished 16th, five points above the dreaded dotted line. They have been linked heavily with Arsenal want away striker Lucas Perez, as they look to try and bolster their attacking options. The club will be hoping to avoid the drop once again, and Perez could be key to their chances of succeeding.

Prediction: I think Madrid will have too much for Deportivo, and will win 2-0. Safest bet would be Madrid to win to nil.

SKYBET: MADRID TO WIN TO NIL- 5/4

SKYBET: ISCO AND BENZEMA TO BOTH SCORE- 11/4

SKYBET: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE AND DRAW- 5/1

Sunday 7.15pm – Barcelona V Real Betis

Barcelona defeated Betis 6-2 at home last season Photo Credit: skysports.com

Barcelona start their season at home to Betis, as they look to recover from a traumatic summer window. With the huge hole left by Neymar’s departure yet to be filled, and a damaging two-legged defeat to Real Madrid still fresh, can the Catalan side recover? The club appear to have made little progress in the transfer market, with Liverpool and Dortmund still adamant that Phillipe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele are going nowhere.

Paulinho, Gerard Deulofeu and Nelson Semedo have come through the Nou Camp doors, but with many fans feeling unimpressed by the club’s activities, there is real pressure for them to add before the window shuts. Betis will not be easy opponents, having managed to earn a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp last season. They will be hoping to build on last year’s 15th placed finish and earn an opening day scalp against a vulnerable Barcelona side.

Prediction: Barcelona to come out 3-1 winners. Home side will be nervous but will have enough class to get the result.

SKYBET: BARCELONA TO WIN AND BTTS- 11/8

SKYBET: BARCELONA TO WIN 1-0, 2-0 OR 2-1- 9/4

SKYBET: MESSI TO SCORE FIRST AND BARCELONA TO WIN 3-0- 11/1

SKYBET: MESSI AND PAULINHO TO BOTH SCORE- 15/8

Saturday 7.15pm – Girona V Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid will hope to better last season’s performances Photo Credit: skysports.com

Atletico take on recently promoted Girona on Saturday, with the visitors hoping to build on last year’s third placed finish. Despite being under a transfer embargo, some would argue they have done the best piece of business by keeping star striker Antoine Griezmann at the club. The French striker signed a new five-year deal at the Vincente Calderon after being subject to interest from Manchester United.

Diego Simeone will be hopeful of making a surge for the La Liga title, with Barcelona currently looking vulnerable. Atletico finished 15 points behind Real Madrid in third place, and this was a result of dropping points against sides such as Girona. If they are to improve on last year, three points on Saturday is a necessity.

With two sides never previously meeting, it offers Girona a perfect opportunity to claim an early scalp in the season. They finished second last season but managed to score the most goals in their division. Having been so prolific last season, it will be interesting to see if they can translate this to the top division, or whether their attackers will find the jump too much.

Prediction: I’m going for Atletico to win, 2-1. They have a habit of making things difficult for themselves on the road and I think Girona could make life difficult for them.

SKYBET: GRIEZMANN TO SCORE FIRST AND MADRID TO WIN 2-1- 19/1

SKYBET: MADRID TO WIN 1-0, 2-0 OR 2-1- 5/4

SKYBET: STUANI AND GRIEZMANN TO BOTH SCORE- 6/1

SKYBET: BTTS TO SCORE OVER 2.5 GOALS- 7/4

Saturday 9.15pm – Sevilla v Espanyol

Sevilla and Espanyol could be a fiery encounter Photo Credit: skysports.com

Having been busy in the transfer market, there is a fresh sense of optimism around the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Ever Banega, Nolito, Jesus Navas, Simon Kjaer and Luis Muriel have all come to strengthen the squad. They have however lost Adil Rami and Vincente Iborra with both moving to Marseille and Leicester City respectively.

Espanyol themselves were impressive last year, finishing in eighth place. With limited resources available to the club, manager Quique Sanchez Flores impressed in his first year in charge. Flores also lead Watford to safety in his only year in England, with many baffled as to why the club opted to part ways with their successful head coach.

Sevilla have won four out of the last six meetings against Espanyol, although the visitors have won twice in the last three. Last season these two clubs served up 14 goals in two hugely competitive matches. These games are also fiery, with two red cards being shown in the last five matches between the sides.

Prediction: I think Sevilla will win, but it will be tough for them. Flores has shown he knows how to make his team hard to beat, but I think Sevilla will just have the edge, winning 2-1.

SKYBET: SEVILLA TO WIN AND MURIEL TO SCORE FIRST- 20/1

SKYBET: BTTS AND OVER 2.5 GOALS- 6/5

SKYBET: BEN YEDER AND MURIEL TO BOTH SCORE- 4/1

SKYBET: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE IN BOTH HALVES- 14/1

SKYBET ACCUMULATOR: REAL, ATLETICO, BARCELONA AND SEVILLA ALL TO WIN AND BTTS: 75/1

Burton Albion vs Birmingham City – Match Preview

Burton Albion vs Birmingham City – Match Preview – Burton Albion host Birmingham City on Friday night in the Sky Bet Championship. With the home side yet to pick up a point this season, it already looks to be an important game for them as they look to avoid the drop.

Having already faced two of last year’s relegated sides, Middlesbrough and Hull, few will be surprised to see Burton struggling. Last year’s achievement of avoiding relegation was nothing short of a miracle, but this year it will be even harder for Nigel Clough to replicate that feet.

The club were dealt an early blow when new record signing Liam Boyce was ruled out for the majority of the season with knee ligament damage. With the budget at the Pirelli stadium already small, this was a huge loss for them. However, one thing Burton can seek solace from is their home form. Last year they picked up 28 points at home, which was a huge part of them staying in the division. Having lost their opening home game against Cardiff, they’ll be keen to get back to winning ways and record their first three points of the season.

Birmingham have had a mixed start to the Championship season. Now under the guidance of Harry Redknapp, the Blues have lost, won and drawn in their opening three games. Redknapp has made no bones about saying he needs more players at St Andrews, and this is clear from his limited options from the bench.

After a dismal defeat on the opening day to Ipswich, four points from Bristol City and Bolton at home is far from catastrophic. Without the injured Che Adams however, they do look toothless up front, with many fans calling for the owners to bring in some much needed firepower. Adams has impressed so far this season, registering three goals in the league and cup so far. He has attracted admirers across the league, with Birmingham knocking back a bid from former manager Gary Rowett, who is now manager at Debry County.

Incredibly, these two have only met twice in the league. Both of those games were last season, where Burton won both times. This means Birmingham have never beaten Burton, a record they will hope to amend come Friday. In both game last season, the games finished 2-0 to Burton, meaning the Blues have also never scored against the Brewers.

On Friday, I can see them breaking that record, with a hard fought 1-1 draw.

SKYBET: CORRECT SCORE 1-1- 9/2

SKYBET: BURTON TO WIN 1-0, 2-0, OR 2-1- 5/2

SKYBET: BIRMINGHAM TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE- 9/2

SKYBET: DRAW AND OVER 2.5 MATCH GOALS- 12/1

SKYBET: DONALDSON AND VASSELL TO BOTH SCORE- 17/2

SKYBET: BURTON TO WIN FROM BEHIND- 16/1

SKYBET: BURTON TO IN TO NIL- 7/2

Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United – Match Preview

Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United – Match Preview – Gary Monk takes on Chris Wilder in his first game in charge at the Riverside Stadium. After losing his first game on the opening weekend, the former Swansea and Leeds manager will be determined to bounce back with a win.

After spending big in the transfer market, Middlesbrough found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out. With new singings Ashley Fletcher, Britt Assombalonga and Johnny Howson all starting, Monk must work out how to get the best out his new additions.

By contrast, Sheffield United marked their return to The Championship with victory against Brentford. After romping to the League One title last year, Chris Wilder has earned himself plenty of plaudits, having earned consecutive promotions with both Northampton and United.

Having only lost 11 of his last 93 games as a manager, Wilder knows how to make his teams hard to beat. He has been successful in every challenge he has faced so far and United are certainly a team in red hot form. Billy Sharp recorded 30 league goals last season, and the striker is already off the mark for this campaign, notching the only goal in their 1-0 victory last time out.

Against the strength of Middlesbrough though, it will be one of the toughest tests the Blades have faced in recent times. Their last win at Boro came back in 1997, just shy of 20 years ago. Their recent form against them doesn’t bode well either, having won only one of their last seven meetings, losing four.

Goals tend to be in short supply when these two meet. In the last ten game between the two, only 17 goals have been scored. As has been the case in previous meetings, I think fine margins will separate these two sides, in what is bound to be a tightly fought game.

Score prediction: Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheffield United

SKYBET: MIDDLESBROUGH TO WIN AND ASSOMBALONGA TO SCORE FIRST- 18/1

SKYBET: ASHLEY FLECTHER AND BILLY SHARP TO BOTH SCORE- 17-2

SKYBET: BILLY SHARP TO SCORE FIRST AND UNITED TO WIN 1-0- 35/1

SKYBET: CORRECT SCORE GROUP BETTING, BORO TO WIN 1-0, 2-0 OR 2-1- 13/8
