Horse Racing Preview – Carlisle, Salisbury & Naas – 28th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from three meetings, coming from Carlisle, Salisbury and a Listed race at Naas. What can we do with the likes of Springforth? I am not trainer but this horse is now 1-11 with 5 placed runs, very exposed however if turning up at Redcar in the future, I think he needs to be put in trackers when he does, running well without winning.

14.00 CARLISLE – EDMUNDSON CABLETECH CARLISLE NOVICE AUCTION STAKES (5f)

This is actually fairly competitive for a run of the mill auction stakes race, three trainers that have won this corresponding race in the past are Bryan Smart, Kevin Ryan and Karl Burke. Let’s start with last year’s winning trainer Bryan Smart who is represented with his newcomer Weeton.

This son of Society Rock has a good sprint pedigree background being related to Namid, however I am going to overlook him on debut this time around but keep close quarters on him for future races around this sphere. Next, I move on to Kevin Ryan’s contender here in Falabelle. She is another new comer form a yard that has won this on three occasions with the last won winner being Fast Act back in 2014 who went on to have a winning rating of 81.

Finally, the selection, I have not come to this decision lightly, firstly I do feel Weeton is the horse to beat, but I am very drawn to Karl Burke’s filly Element’s Quest. She is the daughter of Coventry Stakes runner up Elzaam out of the middle distance mare Sweet Chilli, my reservations even though the juveniles have known to run well on debut, this trip just might be on the sharp side, in time she should be stretching out to 8f.

14.30 CARLISLE – totepoolliveinfo.com EBF NOVICE STAKES (5)  (5.8f)

I would be very disappointed to not see Mark Johnston’s Birdette open her account at the first time of asking. The daughter of Australian Golden Stakes Winner Epaulette will get further than this, a good run here could definitely set her up for 7-8f races as a juvenile, trainer has won this race twice in the past four renewals.

Richard Fahey’s Our Kid made a pleasing debut when winning on the all-weather at Wolverhampton, but it’s turning out to be a weak race with majority of his beaten field failing to impress next time. Move it Move it, I put up last time out which could be a good thing now I am not tipping him this time around.

Third to John Kirkup last time over course and distance, and pending how the latter runs on this corresponding card in an earlier race could see form franked.

BIRDETTE : 2pt Win @ 5/1 (BOG)

15.10 SALISBURY – NEW FOREST FARM MACHINERY/JOHN DEERE AUCTION STAKES (3)  (6f)

Running Cloud made quiet an impression on me when winning with plenty in hand on the all-weather at Wolverhampton, back in third that day was Richard Hannon’s Wildnightinvegas which was ridden by Tom Marquand, the jockey has deserted the latter for the selection which must speak volumes.

Now any other day I would probably be backing Three Little Birds of Sylvester Kirk’s, but she has had four reasonable chances to get off the mark and despite having big entries in the forthcoming months she will have to really step up if she is to make that grade. Onefootinparadise and Kimifive have run well enough on debut, the former finished behind Viscount Loftus who was pitched in way too far when competing at the Royal meeting finishing at the back of the field in the Norfolk Stakes.

Kimifive ran well as expected on debut when fourth over course and distance, just two lengths off the winner, Fran Berry takes over from Oisin Murphy, and I am guessing that if they were having a good stab of winning this Oisin would have got the recall.

RUNNING CLOUD : 3pt Win @ 13/8 (BOG)

19.50 NAAS – QUEALLY GROUP NAAS IRISH EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND NAAS OAKS TRIAL (Listed)  (10f)

Very impressed in the way Jessica Harrington’s Black Ruby went about her business when winning her maiden at Fairyhouse. She had Frima three parts of a length back in second that day and I thought she did it a shade cosily. She is by Dansili who never raced beyond  9f in his career, she goes in to the Oaks later and could face Frima who is going to improve a lot off the back of that run last time.

As for dangers, obviously Frima once more will no doubt be involved, but does have a bit to find with a potential black type winner. Best of the rest, Marc Halford’s Petitcoat won well last time out at Leopardstown, it was a maiden that is going to produce more winners for sure.

BLACK RUBY : 3pt each way @ 9/1 (BOG)

Horse Racing Preview – Leicester, Ballinrobe & Newton Abbott – 27th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Four meetings, Beverley, Leicester, Newton Abbott and Ballinrobe. To say I was disappointed with some of the selections is an understatement, especially Keynote who just never turned up finishing a pulled up last.

16.00 BEVERLEY – RACING UK ON SKY 432 HANDICAP (6) (D.I)  (9.9f)  (0-65)

Ivan Furtado’s yard have hit a good run of form recently, the trainer has had two winners from his last five sent out and saddles Clean Cut here with Royston Ffrench booked. She would have to come into the equation off the back of her fourth here at Beverley when in this grade, off a mark of 51. She has gone on again to finish just out of the frame at Yarmouth in a 0-60, she may do better now stepping up in trip.

Favourites have won the past two renewals of this race and no doubt we will see Mark Johnston’s Katebird field that role. She was kept busy as a juvenile winning 2-11 starts with both wins coming at Nottingham and Chelmsford. Her win on turf off a mark of 58 when beating far superior opposition puts her here with a solid claim. My main concern is she has been beaten a combined distance of forty-eight lengths from her last five runs, but bounced back to form when finishing third at Ripon six days ago in a 0-85 handicap over this index.

Daniel Loughnane’s horses tend to run well when stepped up in trip, their representative here is Trautmann who was last seen finishing fifth on the all-weather at Kempton in a maiden. It was a competitive maiden with the runner up Tricorn seen finishing a close third in last week’s Brittania Stakes at the Royal meeting.

In second was Ronald R who was very unlucky not to win the Brittania Stakes last week when staying on powerfully to finish runner up to Bless Him. A major player if adapting to the extra index this afternoon, Charlie Bennett takes an encouraging 3lb claim off his back this afternoon and cannot be discounted.

With the favourite taking the last two years, there has not been that many big price winners from the three renewals, this would strongly bring in Katebird, especially if bringing her last run to the table in a 0-85. Clean Cut I do like, purely as the trainer has come into some form of late, but the jockey booking is not showing confidence on stats. Trautmann though is the most interesting, the Brittania Stakes form has to be taken seriously, makes handicap debut off a mark of 59 which is there to be exploited.

Trautmann : 2pt Win @ 9/2 (BOG)

19.20 BALLINROBE – IRISH STALLION FARMS EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND MAIDEN  (13.1f)

Paul Deegan’s Time Dee has a good opportunity here to get off the mark at the fourth attempt, his string of fourth places have been encouraging and the step up in trip should see him come on further. This is could be an interesting prep run as he has an entry in the Irish Derby on the 1st July and with the ground now coming up good to firm I feel he is the one they all have to beat this evening.

You can never overlook a Willie Mullins flat contender, here he saddles She is Flawless who makes her debut over this trip, no doubt we will see her eventually competing around the bumper circuit once the season starts back up, but being by Fastnet Rock she is more of a future assignment this time around. Another new comer is John Ox’s Kozy. This daughter of Azamour had a rating as high as 130 on the level, this trip is a good starting point, she will be wound up and ready to go for sure.

Finally, Dermot Weld’s Neptune and O’Brien’s Squires Tale are also both interesting angles, Weld’s newcomer Neptune is another Galileo progeny, if there is solid market support for him it has to be noted, Squires Tale finished last at Dundalk on career first start as a juvenile, and would not be surprised if he showed more in transition from 2-3.

Time Dee : 2pt Win @ 7/2 (BOG)

20.35 NEWTON ABBOTT – newtonabbotracing.com HANDICAP HURDLE (4)  (29.6f)  (0-115)

Both Lake Shore Drive and Vendredi Trois set strong standards in this, the latter retains the services of Richard Johnson who got off the mark at the sixteenth attempt over hurdles at Worcester two weeks ago. Emma Lavelle’s eight-year-old has failed more times when being stepped up beyond three miles, is 0-6 around this index which has included two unseated riders and a runner up spot which came at Stratford eighteen months ago in a 0-110 grade, will have to step up again off this 6lb penalty.

One I feel though they will all have to beat is Johnny Farrelly’s Lake Shore Drive, once trained in Ireland and had spells at John Cullen’s yard, he had his first run for the new yard back in October last year when finishing wayward to the wind. failing to show anything for the yard he went and dropped in at Hexham over 23f. This will be his first run past three miles, a good jockey booking of Brendan Powell is a bonus.

Lake Shore Drive : 2pt Win @ 15/8 (BOG)

21.15 LEICESTER – LEICESTER INTERACTIVE HANDICAP (5)  (6f) (0-70)

The most frustrating horse in this race is Richard Fahey’s Springforth.  Quite a character which has seen him play up going into the stalls, he lost all his chances last time out at when last at Ripon. I am willing to give him one more chance, purely as Tony Hamilton gets back on board after being ridden by three different jockeys since.

If he actually brought both his Pontefract and Hamilton form here this would be a shoe in and he would most definitely be favourite. With only a 1lb rise he does look ahead of the handicap now, but his tendency to miss the break and blow up has cost him, hoping Hamilton can get him back on track.

Best of the rest, Richard Prices’s Bellevarde, who was unlucky not to get off the mark at Haydock, he holds the ability to be thereabouts this evening. After watching a poor showing yesterday of another Varian entry, I am going to stick on my gut feeling that Springforth is about to pounce and get the win on board.

Springforth : 2pt each Way @ 6/1 (BOG)

Horse Racing Preview – Wolverhampton, Chepstow & Windsor – 26th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from three meetings, Chepstow, Windsor and Wolverhampton. Well a welcoming Sunday off yesterday after a tough week at the Royal meeting, but once again the blog managed to hit three winners at nice prices on the last day, Saturdays have been generous over this month with the most winners hitting home.

15.00 Chepstow – Equestrian Surfaces Median Auction Maiden Stakes (12f)

This maiden could actually produce a couple of nice types for the future, the first I will look at is Ed Walkers Dark Profit. He has had two runs now and I suppose you can say the penny is finally dropping, but I am not convinced as he looked all out over course and distance three weeks ago.

Second in the market is Mark Johnston’s Assiduous who finished fourth on debut at Haydock when behind a blog winner UAE King, the front two in the market are potentially mid nineties performers, so Assiduous does warrant respect with main stable jockey turning up to take the ride.

However, I am taking them both on with Charlie Fellowes newcomer Normandie Attack. This son of Kendargent and if you’re not familiar with the Sire, he produced 13 black type winners last year and even though more renown for developing sprinter’s, when a middle distance progeny comes along, it is worth noting.

The most well-known middle distance progeny is Erik the Red who won three times up to 105, so I am willing to give Normandiea Attack a go, only four runners so it’s all in on the win only.

Normandie Attack : 1pt win @ 8/1 (BOG)

15.15 Wolverhampton – Invest City of Wolverhampton Novice Stakes (5f)

Jamie Osborne’s Fab has to really show that his runner up to Queen Mary Stakes winner Heartache was no fluke.

Fab finished one length in front of Lynn’s Memory who has franked the form winning at Redcar last week. It’s a good bit of form, but I am not that taken in that he is an optimum specialist.

Being by Society Rock whose progeny’s do tend to come in for a first run, but I think he will be more effective at 6f in the near future. I am going to take him on with the Mark Johnson entry Branscombe who has had the benefit of three runs and should start to get the hang of things at this stage.

Winner last time out at Sandown in novice company, he seemed to have realized what’s his method is, to win races, sensibly left in novice company and hard to beat again.

Branscombe : 2pt win @ 9/4 (BOG)

17.15 Wolverhampton – Voice Of Racing Day This Friday Median Auction Maiden Stakes (7.1f)

I can categorically say I am not a fan of 7f on any all-weather course, but I am hopeful that the eye catching booking of De Sousa on Ismail’s entry here Right About Now could be appropriately named.

Bombed out on debut at Newbury in a very competitive maiden which has thrown up three winners two include Addeybb and Rigoletto.

He improved quickly when making all weather debut at Kempton when behind a useful type of Godolphins Don’t Give Up. This trip could just be on the sharp side at present being by 9f & 10f winning sire Famous Name, but sets the standard here.

The one I fear the most is Ed Dunlop’s My Illusionist who finished behind the selection at Kempton. He looked very green and pulled hard before coming off the bridle turning for home. I think he will improve for that in-experience and at least hit the frame.

Right About Now : 3pt win @ 11/8 (BOG)

{ad}

17.50 Windsor – Best Of British Festival 1-3 July maiden Stakes (5.1f)

The top two in the market look the best of these in the curtain raiser. Richard Hannon has Ryan Moore booked to ride Strategic, this son of Kodiac has a couple of big sprint entries later in the year and has to be taken extremely serious on debut for a yard that relish maidens at Windsor.

However, I am going to take him on with Roger Varian’s Keynote, sired by Dragon Pulse and full brother to Legendary Lunch who Richard Hannon trained to success as a juvenile.

Connections have come here over running him on the all-weather at Kempton on Wednesday, no doubt will know his business on debut.

Keynote : 2pt win @ 9/4 (BOG)
