Honduras vs Costa Rica – Match Preview

Honduras vs Costa Rica – Match Preview – Two of the tournament’s dark horses match up as Honduras and Costa Rica begin their 2017 Gold Cup campaigns.

Both sides have history in the competition, Honduras securing the title in 2001 and Costa Rica’s success coming further back with 3 tournament wins in 1963, 1969 and 1983. They will be desperate to provide a stern challenge for regular tournament victors Mexico and the United States in this year’s edition.

Both teams are strong favourites to qualify from Group A, with the opposition coming from French Guiana and Canada (who play each other directly before this game) seeming unlikely to trouble.

Jorge Luiz Pinto’s men have a point to prove after a horrendous showing at the last Gold Cup (2015), suffering the humiliation of being eliminated at the group stage. Despite drawing with eventual 3rd place Panama, the Catrachos lost both remaining matches and finished bottom of their group.

The previous Gold Cup was also one to forget for Costa Rica, the Ticos failed to win a single match in the whole tournament, luckily scraping 3 draws against Canada, El Salvador and Jamaica to make it into the second round before being beaten by tournament winners Mexico. Oscar Ramirez will be hoping his side can justify their ‘best of the rest’ tag and challenge for this year’s crown.

Experience can be key in these tournament exchanges and both teams have such an attribute. Honduras can rely on former Wigan Athletic and Hull City defender Maynor Figueroa with 138 caps and Houston Dynamo’s Boniek Garcia with 120 caps in that department. Costa Rica have their own wealth of international experience too, coming from the likes of Michael Umana in defence who recently won his centenary cap, and ex-Fulham playmaker Brian Ruiz who himself will win his 100th cap in this match.

Team News
The major story is that Costa Rica will be without Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, a huge blow as players of such quality come scarcely at this level.

Player to Watch
Joel Campbell often cuts a frustrated figure; deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal without ever leaving permanently he has experienced a journeyman career for a man of just 25-years of age – playing in France (Lorient), Spain (Real Betis and Villareal), Greece (Olympiacos) and Portugal (Sporting CP). A strong showing at the World Cup 2014 – where Costa Rica surprised everyone by reaching the quarter-finals – displayed Campbell’s abilities as a forward with a rare blend of pace and power on the ball. In the Gold Cup players with Champions League experience are a commodity and should Campbell find that missing consistency in his game he is unquestionably a real dangerman not just to Honduras but to the entire tournament.

Chile vs Germany – Match Preview

Confederations Cup, Final
Krestovskyi Stadium, Russia 7pm

Chile vs Germany – Match Preview – The Confederations Cup concludes in a show-piece final at the Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg as World Champions Germany face Copa America victors Chile in the quest for further international silverware.

Both sides have become accustomed to success on the international stage in recent years; Germany having won the 2014 World Cup and only losing in Euro 2016 to runners-up and hosts France. Whilst Chile have won the last two Copa Americas, in 2015 and 2016. With success now ingrained into their very nature, anything less than victory will be a massive disappointment for either country.

On reflection this is a fair final match-up. Arguably the two form teams in world football, overall Germany and Chile have been the two strongest teams throughout the competition, neither suffering a loss at any stage so far.
In fact, the only match Germany have failed to win in the tournament was an entertaining 1-1 draw with Chile, where Alexis Sanchez became his national team’s all-time record goal-scorer with a 6th minute strike before Lars Stindl equalised before the break.

Germany comfortably topped Group B with 3-2 and 3-1 victories over Australia and Cameroon respectively either side of the aforementioned draw with Chile.
A semi-final against Group A runners-up Mexico was the prize and there Joachim Low’s men truly turned on the style, clinically punishing El Tri in a 4-1 thrashing where Schalke playmaker Leon Goretzka played superbly – scoring twice.

It very much seems like a German player will win the Golden Boot too, Lars Stindl and Timo Werner (Werner ahead with one assist compared to Stindl’s none) are both currently on three goals with Goretzka on two whilst the only other player in the tournament who has scored more than once is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now knocked out and home.

Chile’s path to the final was a tad more strenuous, leaving it late to beat Cameroon 2-0 with both goals coming in the final 10 minutes. Two unconvincing 1-1 draws against Germany and Australia followed, but 2nd place in Group B was deservedly La Roja’s.

Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team were excellent again in the semi-final against Portugal; containing Ronaldo and nullifying the Selecao threat while creating several great opportunities themselves. Arturo Vidal hitting the post and a clear-cut penalty not being given took the match to penalties – where Claudio Bravo saved all 3 of the Portuguese penalties he faced to become national hero for the night and take his side just one step away from glory.

Germany’s most effective periods in matches have been when they have dictated play and dominated in the midfield areas, however the aggressive threat of Chile’s work-rate and press will be a different prospect to the side they faced in the group stage and any other side in the competition.
Chile attack fast and incisively and with a player like Alexis Sanchez in their ranks are always a threat when driving at space.

Germany come into the match as favourites, as they have done all throughout the tournament, but an unquestionably intriguing match-up between contrasting styles is promised. Whilst the game itself is expected to be tense and perhaps not the goal-fest all fans crave, tactical ingenuity will be evident and it could well come down to passion and desire, qualities very much synonymous with Chilean football. Could La Roja cause a major upset and win a third international trophy in as many years?

Whatever happens, there will be a new name on the Confederations Cup trophy as neither side has won this crown previously. Both sides will be desperate to exert their international dominance and claim the trophy.

There are no fresh injury concerns from the previous matches for either Germany or Chile.

Kimmich has been in great form for both club and country Photo Credit: skysports.com

Players to Watch
Joshua Kimmich is one of the most effective and versatile footballers in world football. Since his move to Bayern Munich in 2015 the 22-year-old has been deployed in central midfield, right-back, and centre-back to pronounced effect for both club and country. He is a complete team player and reads the game with an intelligence beyond his years. Composed on the ball with wonderful distribution and a great eye for a killer pass, Kimmich is as skilled going forward as he is defensively. He will undoubtedly be a key player not only in this final, but for Bayern Munich and Germany for many years to come.

New Zealand vs British & Irish Lions – 2nd Test – Match Preview

2nd Test, Westpac Stadium, Wellington 8.35am

New Zealand vs British & Irish Lions – 2nd Test – Match Preview – It is truly all to play for as Wellington plays host to the crucial 2nd test where New Zealand can wrap up the series and The Lions simply must win to keep it alive.

Warren Gatland’s Lions must drastically improve from the disappointing 30-15 defeat in the first test if they are to beat the double World Champions on their own patch. The All Blacks were comfortable and dominant against The Lions’ kicking-based strategy and were clinical when the chances were presented, in particular Reiko Ioane who scored twice on his first test start.

The midweek match separating the two tests saw a much-changed Lions team face Hurricanes, and blow a 14-point lead after Iain Henderson’s sinbin to draw the match 31-31. Before the collapse Gatland’s side performed amicably and the performances of CJ Stander, Courtney Lawes and Jack Nowell have earned the trio a place on the replacements bench.

Coming back from a test down to win the series seems an extremely unlikely task to achieve against a relentless All Blacks side. New Zealand have a phenomenal record at home, currently standing at a massive 81.93% win percent.
Additionally, the Lions will be desperate not to suffer a first series whitewash since 2005.

Stranger things have happened though, the squad is full of depth, options and ability. Elements of the performance in the 1st test displayed a Lions side capable of containing The All Blacks so there is hope of a turnaround yet.

Warren Gatland has named Johnny Sexton at fly-half and Owen Farrell at inside centre, the first time the combination have started on the entire tour, Ben Te’o is the man to miss out. Another change is Sam Warburton at blind-side, replacing Peter O’Mahony both in the team and as captain. Saracens powerhouse Maro Itoje comes into the side in place of club teammate George Kruis. Alun Wyn Jones keeps his spot.
Robbie Henshaw and George North have been ruled out for the rest of the tour after sustaining pectoral and hamstring injuries respectively in the draw against Hurricanes.

The All Blacks have been forced to make two changes due to injuries, Ben Smith (concussion) is replaced by Waisake Naholo and Anton Lienert-Brown takes the spot of Ryan Crotty (hamstring).

Beauden Barrett is one of the best Fly Halves in Rugby Photo Credit: skysports.com

Player to Watch
2016 World Player of the Year Beauden Barrett is a fantastic athlete, and his brilliance doesn’t just lie with his deceptive pace and magical hands. Simply put, there is no fly-half in world rugby who does the basics better than the Hurricanes 10. He rarely misses a tackle or gets caught out of position, his passing his excellent and his in-game kicking is flawless, displaying intelligent game management at every opportunity. Barrett, like most New Zealanders, has the mentality of a champion and has nerves of steel in front of the posts. It was never going to be easy filling the cataclysmic void left by one of the all-time greats in Dan Carter but after trialling with Aaron Cruden and Colin Slade, Barrett has done as good a job as possible in filling the legendary boots. Along with his two brothers Scott and Jordie, the Barrett’s hold the record for the first time in history that three brothers have been named in the same All Blacks squad. Another brilliant record held by Barrett is the most consecutive wins since his first test (19).  The 26-year-old will be pivotal in getting his side over the line to win the test and claim the whole series.
