Horse Racing Preview – Windsor, Carlisle & Nottingham – 19th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from Carlisle, Windsor and Nottingham.

On the eve of Royal Ascot, it will be good to go into the meeting on form, Ascot has been generous to me over the years and may it continue.

14.30 Carlisle – British Stallions Stud EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes (5.8f)

This looks a big opportunity for John McConnell’s Evies Wish to get off the mark at her first attempt from her transition from 2-3.

The trainer can’t be in better form, with a good double at Hexham over the jumps on Saturday, this daughter of Holy Roman Emperor had what I would say a creditable juvenile resume with only four runs under her belt.

Looking at her Irish form, they were poor maidens indeed with most of the top three beaten since, but when you have a yard that is oozing confidence at the moment, it’s hard to oppose.

Obvious danger looks to come from Paul Coles yard with World Power who has the benefit of three runs this year, her best effort came at Thirsk when runner up to Muscika who has recently gone to win again off a mark of 79, with the services of Joe Fanning you would have thought they are coming here to land the spoils.

Evies Wish : 2pt win @ 11/10 (BOG)

18.15 Windsor  – EBF Stallions Novice Stakes (5f)

Ed Dunlop’s Indian Warrior has to be given the up most respect here, his third over course and distance last month, with the fourth and fifth having both franked that level of form, should definitely be thereabouts at the business end.

However, the selection comes from Jeremy Noseda’s yard in Gotti who ran a honest fourth at Brighton ten days ago, it took a while for the penny to drop under today’s pilot Gerard Mosse, but when it did he was staying on with real purpose.

Mosse gets the recall this evening, and I would be very surprised if he was beaten tonight.

Gotti : 3pt win @ 10/3 (BOG)

20.00 Nottingham – Read Silvestre de Sousa @ 188bet Handicap (0-65) (8f)

Indigo Princess could be a tough nut to crack here, her course and distance win two runs back sees her now stepping up in another class, she’s dependable and another big run is imminent.

I am going to take her on though with the man of the hour, Silvestre de Sousa, who mounts Kafoo of Ed Dunlop’s. Her sole win has come on the all-weather and has not shown much in the likeness that a win was just around the corner.

For me she’s a monkey, the potential is definitely there no doubt, and it would be ironic to see the jockey ride the winner of the named sake race.

Kafoo : 1pt each way @ 6/1 (BOG)

20.15 Windsor – Eton Crown & Cushion Maiden Stakes (10f)

Richard Hannon’s juveniles at Windsor have to be respected, their representative here is Prerogative who had a busy juvenile campaign without hitting the net. She tried handicapping last season, a few chances went begging and has become very exposed and expensive to follow.

Percy B Shelley has just had the one juvenile run when finishing fifth on the all-weather when behind a listed winner, there will be more improvement to come I am sure, use of a tongue strap for the first time will no doubt settle him.

Even though the top two in the market look on paper to improve, the vulnerability is there and this is the reason I have gone with Richard Hughes Marie Josephe. Her two runs this year have seen her finish just outside the placing’s.

She ran a good fourth on debut over course and distance when behind Silken Dancer (winner in this blog). The runner up has gone on to succeed also, Shane Kelly will ride her again, more to come from this daughter of Cape Cross.

Marie Josephe : 1pt each way @ 11/2 (BOG)

Horse Racing Preview -York & Sandown – 17th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from York and Sandown. I took yesterday off to study for the forthcoming Royal festival next week, which should be an amazing week of solid racing.

14.40 Sandown – Randox Health Scurry Stakes (Listed) (5f)

A competitive renewal that see’s the smart Listed Westow Stakes winner Fashion Queen make an appearance. She took the scalp of Ardad that day to thirteen lengths, even at the weights you would have to think the form looks held.

My opinion in Ardad is complimentary; he has lost his way significantly since landing the Flying Childers at Doncaster last season. The Abbaye form has to be respected when mid field; the winner has already stamped his authority on the sprinting challenges this season.

Ardad looks ground dependable for me, not too soft or too firm, if getting good racing ground he most definitely can out run his 8/1 odds. Copper Knight had really turned a corner this year, with wins in the Sustainable Handicap at Chester and he then went on to win at York when landing the Unibet Sprint Stakes.

His sole run here over course and distance last year saw him literally put in his place, to say Easterby has found him making a pleasing transition is an under statement, a horse on top of his game and very hard to beat in this form.

Copper Knight : 2pt win @ 7/2 (BOG)

14.55 York – Best Western Hotels Ganton Stakes (Listed) (7.8f)

I’m sorry to start this off in this manner, but I really thought Jamie Spencer gave Spark Plug the most under-enterprising ride in the Listed Festival stakes three weeks ago.

Leaving his mount far too much to do in the closing stages to be defeated by a nose. It’s not the first or last time Jamie Spencer will get it all wrong this season and cost a winnable ride into a disaster. We will see a jockey change this time with James Doyle taking over.

Last year’s Cambridgeshire winner drops to under a mile for the first time in his career and has to be taken on merit that his fractions from York over today’s designated trip has shown he can handle the drop, and Sandown.

Thikriyaat is a very interesting appointment here by Sir Michael Stoute. Last year’s Bonham Stakes winner showed nothing here at York when finishing on the tailenders.but to be fair he is a very lightly raced four year old, more to come I think.

Mondialiste has completely gone backwards since his Arlington Millions accomplishment, he would have to bring that form here and some, but his York Stakes run from last season was behind the very smart colt Time Test.

With the stacks of negativity that Mondialiste is going to struggle to turn the bad form around, I can swiftly move on to an entry that could have been over looked. Khafoo Shememi of Richard Hannon’s picked up his first win on turf for the new year at Sandown Park , he went on to record a gutsy win that day.

Sean Levey has impressed me this year with some good confident rides win or lose and for me, Khafoo cannot be underestimated.

Spark Plug : 2pt each way @ 9/2 (BOG)

15.30 York – Catherine Kinloch Paver Memorial Macmillan Charity Handicap (0-105) (6f)

Most of the evening I have been going back and forth to get Roger Varian’s Ekhtijaar beaten, his Sprint Trophy win I thought was far better than his current rating, In fact to say I think he is rated at least 10-12lb higher than his current 94 and I generally feel a pattern horse in the making.

It would be an insult to not at least look over the opposition, Golden Apollo won impressively at Pontefract recently, only a 5lb assessment which gives an element of a big run still to come. Ran well over 7f here at York at the May meeting when behind a good winner in Battered, drop in trip looks a good move and feared.

Ekhtijaar : 3pt win @ 7/2 (BOG). (NAP)

15.50 Sandown – Randox Health Handicap (0-100) (8f)

Greentide showed attitude when losing last time here when splitting Laidback Romeo and Sir Roderic, the trio are closely matched again, but I thought Greenside showed enough to get a Royal Hunt Cup invitation, but again he has to show he is still worthy.

In punter terms I again feel Greenside is a solid bet, I can’t see his two adversaries reversing the form it up holds.

Greenside : 2.5pt win @ 5/2 (BOG) (NB)

Horse Racing Preview – Haydock, Newbury & Leopardstown – 15th June 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from three meetings, Haydock, Newbury and Leopardstown. Well another brace of winners yesterday, may it continue with a busy nine days ahead.

Over the coming weekend, I will be putting forward my top four horses to follow for Royal Ascot, along with two selections per day.

13.30 Newbury  – Be Wiser Insurance Novice Stakes (6.5f)

I was actually struggling to pinpoint one in this race as I do like both Being There and Rogue who are representing two good yards around this sphere.

I have opted for Being There of Charlie Appleby’s whose juveniles are very forward at present. He was a 1.4m yearling and is beautifully bred by Dubawi through the bloodline of French 1000gns winner Beauty Parlour who also finished runner up in the Prix de Diane in her career.

The dam-sire was non other than Deep Impact who was a prolific Group 1 winner in Japan which included wins such as the Japan Cup on his resume. I would be disappointed to see him lose on debut with this kind of pedigree.

Reasons into why I chose him over Rogue is the fact he finished fourth to subsequent winners, even though that form is unknown quality he does have a course and distance run under his belt, but I was not convinced this trip would suit.

Being There : 3pt win @ 11/8 (BOG)

14.30 Newbury  – Crossland EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies Stakes (8f)

Once more I have elected to stick with Michael Bells entry here Shimmering Light. She could give sire Dubawi an excellent afternoon, being related to quite a few winners and juveniles she has the quality for me to run well on debut, very eye catching booking of Ryan Moore.

John Gosden’s Standing Rock is closely related to the smart Reckoning, a yard that tend to have done well early doors with their juveniles, but on this occasion, she has come up against a potentially nice selection.

Shimmering Light : 1.5pt win @ 9/2 (BOG)

{ad}

18.05 Haydock – racinguk.com/freetrial Haydock Apprentice Training Series Handicap (0-70) (11.6f)

The top two at the head of the market look the ones to concentrate on here. Lugano has hit a brace of wins on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and Newcastle, even though he won comfortably at Wolverhampton on years re-appearance in this grade, he comes into this off an official mark of 75 in a 0-70 handicap, could be still improving.

Zenafire won on heavy ground on his return from a success over hurdles, this is a drop in class after his rout win over 14f here last week. Comes here with a 6lb penalty, but just might find Prescott’s entry a bit too good.

Lugano : 3pt win @ 15/8 (BOG)

{ad}

19.20 Leopardstown  – Oliver Brady Memorial Shabra Charity Ballycorus Stakes (Group 3) (7f)

Two northern trainers go head to head here in Fahey and David O’Meara with Don’t Touch and Firmament. It’s the former I am more interested in but it is a shame I will have to rely on Tony Hamilton riding out.

Don’t Touch was last seen on these shores when finishing fifth in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes last year, but he did himself justice I thought with only two lengths separating the top five finishers.

This year they are taking a bold bid now stepping him up in trip, and this looks a prep run for the forth coming July Cup next month. Now he must be in good heart as they bring him into pattern company over a listed event at Salisbury on Monday week.

O’Meara is attempting to make a race of it when he saddles Firmament, runner up at York in a 0-110 handicap last month over this trip was ok, but both of his wins have come over a mile, so he just might not have the speed to go with Don’t Touch, however he does stay further and Don’t Touch steps into very unknown territory.

Don’t Touch : 2pt win @ 5/2 (BOG)
