Horse Racing Preview - Newcastle - 24th October 2017

Today’s horse racing preview selections come from Newcastle, Kempton and Exeter.

15.10 Newcastle – 32Red Casino Conditions Stakes (6f)

Lake Volta (107)
River Boyne (103)
It Don’t Come Easy (92)

Very competitive Class 2 conditions race to get involved in, Gordon Elliott’s yard could not be in better form, after a six timer last week the yard send over River Boyne. He is the unknown quality in the race and the most in-experienced. His maiden at the Curragh back in July saw him finishing just over twelve lengths behind double Group 1 winning Juvenile US Navy Flag. Three months off and he turned up at Dundalk over 7f, he finished a creditable fourth that day to Marc Alford’s Andesh, the drop back to 6f will suit the son of Dandy Man and does look well treated off 83.

It Don’t Come Easy has had two runner up spots with one good run coming when second to Rebel Assault in the Listed Rockingham at York, half brother to 80 rated Harome he has been around pattern company ever since winning the Edinburgh Castle Stakes at Musselburgh. With an official rating of 95, he does for me though have to step up again despite this being a drop in class.

So the selection comes in Mark Johnston’s Lake Volta who picked up a couple of stakes races during the summer, he has had two spins around the all weather, finishing third in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes when behind Invincible Army and eighteen days ago when three parts of a length behind the smart Riyazan. Six Furlongs does look his better trip and I would expect him to be on the premises once more under stable jock Joe Fanning.

LAKE VOLTA : 1pt each way @ SP (BOG)

16.20 Exeter – Bet £10 Get £20 At 100Bet Handicap Hurdle (0-100) (21.6f)

Eddy (108)
Cosmic Diamond (100)
Hurricane Ridge (96)

Susan Gardner’s Eddy was an impressive winner over course and distance a couple of weeks ago when overturning 104 rated Orchardstown Cross, he has been hit with a 10lb rise for that emphatic display, however even off 95 this afternoon he still looks to have plenty in the locker, Sean Houlihans 7lb claim once more eases the task.

Cosmic Diamond was seen winning three weeks ago at Huntingdon under today’s pilot Gavin Sheehan, he ran way above his rating of 79 that day when beating Harry Skelton’s Shrubland who has gone on to frank that form off 103 four days ago. With only the 4lb penalty to overcome he still looks very well treated and will get 12lb from the selection. Top weight Hurricane Ridge was once with Jessica Harrington over both codes, since joining Jimmy Frosts yard two seasons ago he had failed to show that sparkle until recently.

With two placed runs over the past two months it looks like he has found the enthusiasm to race once more. It looked like they were losing patience with him when running him in a seller at Newton Abbot going down by ten lengths to 103 rated Bonobo, again he was placed in a selling handicap and ran even better when five lengths off 98 rated Scales who had previously been just denied in a 105 handicap hurdle, so the ability is still there, off 99 once more there could be something there if running up to his last run.

EDDY : 2pt Win @ 4/1 (BOG)

17.10 Newcastle – Betway Dash Handicap (0-75) (5f)

Vallarta (84)
Pomme De Terre (82)
Casterbridge (76)

Dash for cash and it is paramount to get a good clean break around Newcastle, top weight Pomme De Terre has only run around here on the turf when finishing third in a maiden, with inexperience on a tapeta surface, it will be interesting to see if he can bring over his summer runs to the all weather. His best run this year came at Doncaster when third to Art Obsession, however it has not been bringing winners and he just might, once more, find a couple too good.

Eric Alston’s Casterbridge showed signs of improvement I thought when fourth at Nottingham when beaten by far better company. Winner in this company at Leicester in the spring when winning off a mark of 70, but ever since he has seemed to have struggled off the back of that 6lb penalty failing to hit the frame on his last seven encounters.

The selection comes in the way of Ruth Carr’s Vallarta, he was also a winner around this sphere in the spring when winning at Catterick, he is not overly exposed on the all weather as some are in this field, also with this being only his third visit to Newcastle where he finished third over 7f and was last seen here two runs back over 6f on the slower surface, this drop back to 5f and the fact he has plenty of speed he could get the run of the race in front.

VALLARTA : 1pt each way @ SP (BOG)

19.45 Kempton – 32Red Handicap (0-85) (6f)

Related (109)
Parnassian (95)
Show Stealer (92)

The All Weather starts all over again and Luke Morris will be looking for championship number three, he rides here the selection Related for Paul Midgely. The last time he was seen on the all weather came over course and distance in a Class 2 Conditions Stakes, he finished last of five that day just over four lengths behind 111 rated Pretend, the race has not shown much with the top two not managing a win since, however the third Spring Loaded won the Portland Hcp off 92 and even on that mark this afternoon would see him go close off just 83.

Parnassian last run on the all weather came at Newcastle in what looked a very competitive conditions race, the winner Kananee has not been seen since for Godolphin, the runner up Sutter County went on to land a valuable race at Goodwood and was just denied when running a head behind Masham Star in the Chelmsford City Cup. He managed to pick up his first win of 2017 when landing the Royal Sprint Series on good to firm ground, I do have reservations though if the ground stays soft to heavy he will either become a non runner or just will not be involved.

Finally Show Stealer, I thought he should have won last time out when finishing third over five furlongs at Chelmsford, he was given far too much to do over the optimum trip, however David Probert never gave up riding him all the way to the line to go behind by two lengths. He is not renown to running on sand, so he equipped himself well on debut, cannot see why he will not be on the premises once more now stepping back up in trip and Probert back on board, he is the one I fear the most in the race off his well handicapped mark of 84.

Tottenham vs West Ham - Match Preview

Tottenham vs West Ham – Match Preview – Tottenham host a struggling West Ham in the Carabao Cup this Wednesday.

The hosts have enjoyed some delightful form as of late, most recently dispatching of Liverpool 4-1 this weekend in the Premier League. The visitors haven’t enjoyed such fortune however, with their previous outing seeing them lose 3-0 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Whilst West Ham manager Slaven Bilic’s future remains in the balance, many Hammers fans will be hoping their side can form something of a cup run to take the concentration away from their Premier League woes.

Tottenham were unconvincing in their last round match in the Carabao Cup at home to Barnsley. A goal from Dele Alli was enough for Mauricio Pochettino to wipe away the sweat and see his side in the hat for the next round. West Ham found their previous round much more comfortable beating a Bolton side 3-0 at home.

Harry Kane has been hitting back at his ‘two season wonder’ critics with goals aplenty in the Premier League. Many believe he is the most dangerous striker in the world at the moment, so good luck to the West Ham defence if he starts. The same faces are continuing to prosper in the Spurs squad and they are turning from strength to strength every time they step onto the field. Their possession-based style of play is proving tough for some of Europe’s best sides to deal with and could have West Ham running around like headless chickens. Can Spurs reach the next round?

Skybet Correct Score Group Betting – Tottenham to Win 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 – 7/2

West Ham are close to hitting a crisis era, with nothing seeming to go their way. Their new signings haven’t fitted in at all and some are already looking at leaving, their managers tactics don’t seem to be working and their fans are becoming more frustrated by the minute. The London based club have won one of their last four matches; a 1-0 home win over Premier League strugglers Swansea. It was only a few weeks ago that West Ham took on Spurs in the Premier League and they won’t be hoping for a repeat of last time.

Arnautovic must improve for West Ham Photo Credit: skysports.com

New signing Javier Hernandez has shown glimpses of his talents but is yet to wow the West Ham fans. He could be a key figure if he features for the Hammers, as well as winger Marko Arnautovic. Their sheer pace and power on the counter could cause Spurs issues if they’re having problems finding the back of the net like in their last round match. Can the Hammers shock Spurs?

Skybet Match Result – West Ham to Win – 5/1

Carabao Cup - Swansea vs Man United - Match Preview

Carabao Cup – Swansea vs Man United – Match Preview – With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, Manchester United take a trip to Wales to face Swansea City.

After their dramatic 2-1 defeat to Premier League new-boys Huddersfield Town, Jose Mourinho will be hoping his side can return to winning ways. That defeat was United’s first in the league this campaign, which sees them now five points behind neighbours Manchester City.

The defeat at the weekend was far from acceptable. In typical Mourinho fashion, the United boss made no bones about his side’s performance as they struggled at the John Smiths Stadium. Given that result, it wouldn’t surprise me if he named a strong team, as he looks to get them back on track.

One positive from the match was Marcus Rashford. The England youngster has excelled this season and one of a few players who performed well at the weekend. With eight goals this season already, he is enjoying his best spell as a United player and has two goals in his last two. Often played out wide by Mourinho this year, Rashford may get his chance in his preferred central role on Tuesday night.

Swansea boss Paul Clement was left with plenty to ponder after his side suffered another home defeat. Leicester City’s victory at the Liberty Stadium means the Swans’ have won just one of their five home games this season. The Swans’ currently sit in 15th place, level on points with third-bottom Everton. With just two wins this season, the pressure is firmly on the former Bayern Munich assistant manager to drag them up the league table.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Swans, with just six this season. That is the joint lowest in the Premier League, with only Bournemouth equalling that total. At the back, Swansea have conceded nine goals at home and only one away from home. That would suggest they are trying to be more offensive but are getting caught at the back as a consequence.

Tammy Abraham will be expected to lead the line against Man Utd Photo Credit: skysports.com

When these two met early in the season, United came away with a 4-0 away victory. Whilst the end score was emphatic, United scored three goals in the last ten minutes to add gloss to the full-time result. In the match, Swansea were more than competitive and had chances to get something from the game. United have won three of the clubs last four meetings, with Swansea’s last victory coming back in 2015.

With United licking their wounds after their humiliation at the weekend, I can only see them progressing in this tie.

Horse Racing Preview - Windsor - 23rd October 2017

Today’s horse racing preview selections come from Windsor. On another note, what a cracking weekend of racing we just had, some disappointments and some jubilations especially Cracksman who was so impressive winning by seven lengths, Persuasive toppled the big boys in the sprint and finally Order of St George got his win, with O’Brien taking another Group 1 success as Hydrangea landed the Fillies and Mares and looks set for Breeders Cup.

One to notebook on the day was Lord Glitters, an amazing ride from Danny Tudhope from last to first to take the Balmoral Handicap.

15.10 Windsor – Sky Bet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (0-85) (8.2f)

Sir Roderic (88)
Wimpole Hall (86)
MikMak (85)

I put forward MikMak two weeks ago when just being denied at Nottingham, it was his best run to be fair since finishing runner up in a 0-80 handicap at Bath back in August when behind 97 rated Anythingtoday. The drop back in trip and the fact he was getting his ground for the first time for months showed how unlucky he was, once more they have kept him at the 8f and the softer the better for a bold show again under Dougie Costello.

Wimpole Hall is actually having his first run of an ending season, last seen September of last year when finishing mid table in a 0-95 handicap at Newmarket, that race is starting to work out quiet well with the runner up placed again off 93 & more recently 88, in fact most of them from that race have all run well in the mid nineties. Question, does he go well fresh? Not really as he has needed a couple of runs to find the winning enclosure, but cannot be discounted with not that many miles on the clock for a four year old.

Now on to the selection, and this horse has been so far out of form its mind blowing that he has dropped into this category. It’s been a long while now since he won two 0-90 handicaps at Sandown last summer, in fact he won five of his ten starts that year which included a 0-85 handicap over course and distance, but this year has been a change of events, 0-11 with only two placed runs at Sandown and Newbury, the plus is they came in better company and the fact he has not been beaten that far in them races suggests somewhere there is a win waiting to happen off his current mark of 83.

SIR RODERIC : 1pt each way 10/1 (BOG)

16.10 Windsor – Sky Bet Racing Cash Out Handicap (0-70) (8.2f)

Mitigate (99)
Sky Marshall (80)
Groor (80)

David Probert has been in blistering form over the past fortnight and rides here for trainer Mohammad Moubarak, if you are not familiar with the trainer, he used to train in his own right in the early nineties and moved to Florida training some big Group 1 winners. Groor has not really come on to success since landing a valuable handicap early last year at the Meydan festival, the once James Tate trained five year old is on a losing run of sixteen and now drops into a moderate overly exposed 0-70 handicap. Now officially rated 72 he should be really making some of his old class tell in these races, however he has failed miserably and drops another class, at this rate he’ll be in a drastic 0-55 handicap for horses that are just going to be a bit of fun.

This is only the second time Probert has ridden then horse and I would say he coached him nicely when finishing sixth last time at Lingfield, his turf mark is much higher than his all weather, but to win this race having to give weight all round is not going to be easy. Ed Walker’s Sky Marshall could be the interesting one here. With only just the three career runs behind him he has improved slowly but successfully and showed a good attitude when finishing fourth of twelve at Chepstow.

There was no getting to Roger Varian’s runaway winner Ashwaas on the day who blitzed his rivals comfortably, but there is improvement there and to be honest I would be surprised not to see him fighting out the finish, however one that really looks well handicapped here is Mitigate of Jane Chapple-Hyams. He has not thrived since his maiden win at Leicester earlier in the year, and was probably pitched into a Listed race at Saint-Cloud for a day out. He has achieved today’s rating purely off his third of four against Rodaini (100) & Hugin (89) beaten just under four lengths. I would like to think that the new surroundings is coming together slowly and Hollie Doyle takes the 3lb claim off his back once more.

MITIGATE : 1pt each way @ 10/1 (BOG)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool - Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool – Match Preview – Wembley hosts the match of the weekend, as Spurs look to end a five-year drought against a Liverpool side who desperately need to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

Whilst faring well against their respective title rivals, or the ‘big 6’, Spurs have to look as far back as 2012 for the last time they enjoyed victory over The Reds – a feat perhaps made even more difficult with the current inconsistency being endured at their new temporary home, Wembley.

A battling 1-0 win over Bournemouth at England’s home of football in their last league fixture quelled some of the nerves, but a Liverpool team fresh from scoring seven goals away in the Champions League will unquestionably prove to be a sterner test.

Pochettino’s side will come into the game with more confidence too after returning from successful European exploits of their own – with a well-earned 1-1 draw against double Champions League victors Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, despite a change in personnel and tactics. This result proves that Spurs are a top team and can mix it with the biggest, highlighting their huge progression in recent years.

Kane is yet to score at Wembley for Spurs Photo Credit: skysports.com

With the two Manchester clubs’ barnstorming starts to the season, Spurs are almost the forgotten team. With a 2nd and 3rd (although many know it should have also been 2nd) place finish in the last two campaigns, write them off at your own peril though – they are only three points away from Manchester United and five from City, it could be The Lilywhites who find themselves perched at the top in the blink of an eye, especially in such an unpredictable division.

Liverpool have won just one of their last five in the league and before Tuesday night’s win in Slovenia just one of their last eight in all competitions. The last league fixture was a turgid 0-0 draw against long-term enemy Manchester United, which once again highlighted the lack of clinical edge in the team’s attacking play; a feature which has hindered Liverpool most of the season – other draws against Burnley, Spartak and Sevilla spring to mind.

Whilst the building blocks were there for all to see under Klopp for Liverpool last season by securing 4th place and Champions League football, the side have failed to kick on, currently languishing in 8th position on 13 points from eight games, some nine points off Manchester City at the top and some pressure could be mounting on the popular German manager.

Coutinho can make it five consecutive away goals if he finds the net against Spurs Photo Credit: skysports.com

A win against a major rival like Tottenham could dispel any such pressure and set The Reds on the path of challenging at the peak of the table again; with other results going their way Klopp’s men could climb as high as fourth into the Champions League places – showing how tight the league is. When a fully fluid and firing Liverpool are a force to be reckoned with, it’s just a case of finding that force regularly.

An intriguing and quality-filled game of football is to be expected with two managers trying to impose their style of play on the game and dominate the opposition.
It may be a case of who can take their chances – or a piece of magic from a respective talisman Harry Kane or Phillipe Coutinho – the latter of whom is searching for his fifth consecutive away goal for Liverpool. Could he be the match winner?

Horse Racing Preview - Kempton - 22nd October 2017

Today’s horse racing preview selections come from what looks a useful looking Kempton card, the jumps season is back which is a good thing to be fair as its been a hard long flat season.

15.15 Kempton – Better Odds With Matchbook Novices Hurdle (Listed) (16f)

Saxo Jack (141)
Amour De Nuit (131)

There is a couple here that really stand out, top weight here especially. Smart hurdler Armour De Nuit was beaten last week in the Grade 2 Persian War Novices Hurdle by Fergal O’Brien’s Poetic Rhythm who is a decent type so the form is something to take note of. Most of his career form has come around the Novice ranks which is building up nicely with two wins and three placed runs from five attempts. He is a nice prospect for this forth coming season for Ditcheat and he would be one of mine to follow throughout the season.

However I am willing to tackle him this afternoon with Sophie Leech’s Saxo Jack, he is another that has come through the novice ranks nicely and his Newton Abbott run two races back when over turning Colin Tizzard’s Templestatefloresco was impressive , the runner up has recently gone and won around these ranks and the third has also improved when finishing runner up Ian Williams Banditry three weeks ago.

He ran well again when beaten eight lengths by Harry Skelton’s smart Bedrock, the pair that day were miles ahead of the third, so there is still more improvement to come from the seven year old, but he will have to be on his game to get close to Amour De Nuit.

SAXO JACK : 2pt Win @ SP (BOG)

16.20 Kempton – Matchbook VIP Hurdle (Listed) (16f)

Ravyn Black (153)
San Benedeto (152)

As you can see this is a very close call, and once more I am taking on Paul Nicholls San Benedetto who on paper probably has the best profile coming into the race. Winner of this years Doom Bar Maghull Novices chase at Aintree when beating the very smart Forest Bihan who has franked that form this month at Kelso when turning over Simple Ned. His last run over the larger obstacles saw him finish twelve lengths off Altior in the Celebration Chase.

So why am I taking him on with that kind of form under his belt, he is stepping back to hurdles for the first time since last April, his stats was 3-12 winning two novice contests along with a 0-135 handicap, but I do feel Ravyn Black could have a soft lead in front.

His front running tactics in the past has been very beneficial, we would have to go back to last February when landing the Grade 2 Kingswell Hurdle and was seen winning a 0-150 handicap hurdle in the same season. There can be excuses for his below par runs this year with the ground coming up unfavourable and now gets his quicker ground this afternoon which could see him bound along in front.

RAYVN BLACK : 1pt Win @ SP (BOG)
