Croatia vs England: England will be looking to avenge their World Cup semi-final defeat when they face Croatia in their second UEFA Nations League match.

Gareth Southgate will need few reminders of the match that stopped England reaching the World Cup final in July. Mario Madzukic’s late winner still live long in the memory of the players and supporters. Now, England must try and replicate their stunning 4-1 win against Croatia in 2008, where Theo Walcott scored a memorable hattrick. Southgate has named a youthful squad once again, with Mason Mount, Jadon Sancho and James Maddison all handed their first call-ups.

England have been crying out for some creativity in midfield, so the inclusion of Mount, Maddison, and Harry Winks may offer that. Ross Barkley has also been handed a recall, at the expenses of Chelsea teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The attacking midfielder has impressed under Maurizio Sarri so far this season, grabbing a goal and an assist in their recent win over Southampton. If Barkley can continue his early-season form, there is no reason why he can’t realise his obvious potential and become an integral figure for club and country.

Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic has named much of the same squad following their appearance in the final of the World Cup in the summer. Ballon d’Or nominee Luka Modric will be desperate to steal the show, as he did when the sides met in Russia. Chelsea loanee Mateo Kovacic will be looking to earn himself a start; the Croatian playmaker has settled into life in West London since joining on loan from Real Madrid. They will be without Juventus striker Mandzukic for this game, with former Leicester striker Andrej Kramaric expected to deputise.

Felix Brych is the referee for this game. The German has officiated three Bundesliga games this season, accumulating an average cards total of 1.33 per game. Therefore, I would advise a maximum of 40+ total points for this game.

Having lost to Spain last time out, England need a result if they’re to avoid being relegated from Group 4A. I think the strength of the side Southgate puts out will indicate what he thinks of this competition, but having lost to Croatia in July, they will be desperate to restore some pride.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield with both teams looking to move three points clear of the other at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds suffered their second defeat of the season in midweek as they lost 1-0 away at Napoli in the Champions League. That result leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side without a win in three games, having lost and drawn to Chelsea last week. Had it not been for Daniel Sturridge’s late equaliser at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool would be facing the champions on the back of three straight defeats.

A lot has been made of Mohamad Salah’s form in recent weeks. The Egyptian forward, who netted 36 goals last season, has scored just three times in ten games this time around. Salah’s movement has not been as sharp, with many suggesting he is still haunted by the injury that forced him off in the Champions League final last May. Whatever the issue, Liverpool need Salah back at his best if they are to defeat Manchester City again. He was instrumental in their three victories over Pep Guardiola’s men last season, alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

City picked up their first win in the Champions League after a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in Germany. David Silva completed their comeback with three minutes remaining after they’d fallen behind after a minute of the game. City currently lead the way in the league, although only goal difference separates them and the Reds. Kevin de Bruyne is back in training, although Guardiola refused to reveal whether the Belgian would play any part in the match this weekend. They will be without Fabian Delph, whilst there are also doubts over the fitness of Benjamin Mendy. The Citizens are unbeaten on the road this season, dropping just two points at Molineux this term. They’ve also scored 12 goals in their last four games, conceding once.

Martin Atkinson is the referee for Sunday afternoon’s clash. The Englishman has officiated seven top-flight matches this season, accumulating an average booking points total of 35.7. Therefore, I would advise a maximum of 60+ for this fixture.

This game has a lot to live up to, after the classics we witnessed last season. Given the hectic schedules over the last few weeks, I can see this becoming a tense, tactical battle. As a result, I’m going for a draw in this game, which would probably suit both managers.

Jose Mourinho’s side struggled in midweek, drawing 0-0 with Valencia in the Champions League. United’s performance was symptomatic of their recent run, as they struggled to break down the Spanish side. It was an improvement on their 3-1 reverse against West Ham last Saturday, although that isn’t really saying much. Eric Bailly was recalled to the side in midweek in place of Victor Lindelof and they did look better for it. Their main problem is in attack. Alexis Sanchez still looks out of sorts after playing from the right-wing on Tuesday. Even Romelu Lukaku, who is usually one of United’s better performers, is struggling up front. Marcus Rashford was their best player in midweek, and after picking up a goal against West Ham, he will be hoping to build some momentum and form.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a result. Rafa Benitez’s side were beaten at home last weekend, with Leicester coming away with a 2-0 win. In truth, Newcastle’s squad is one of the worst in the league. They lack a spark in attack and often get overrun in midfield. If it wasn’t for Benitez, they probably would have gone down last year, such is the lack of investment in the squad. They currently sit 18th in the Premier League, with only two points from their opening seven games. That makes them one of only three teams yet to win the top flight this campaign.

Anthony Taylor is the referee for this game. The Englishman has officiated seven league games so far this season. He has an average booking points total of 38.6, which is one the highest in the division. As a result, I would advise a maximum of 50 total points for this fixture.

Both these sides are desperate for a win. With the pressure building on Mourinho, he must get three points from this game, otherwise, the writing may be on the wall for him. Brighton vs West Ham: West Ham will be looking to build on their impressive win against Manchester United last weekend when they travel down to the South Coast to face Brighton on Friday night.

The Hammers recent upturn in form will be a welcome sight to Manuel Pelligrini after they lost their opening four games. A win at Everton was followed up with a draw against Chelsea before they deservedly beat Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday. Marco Arnautovic was again in the thick of the action, providing the telling goal to re-establish their two-goal cushion. The main difference in the last three games has been the Hammers’ balance in midfield. Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble have formed an effective partnership, which has made them more solid in the middle of the park. The real conundrum will come when Jack Wilshere returns in a few weeks from his ankle injury.

With so many new signings, it was always going to take time for West Ham to gel. Another man who has impressed in recent weeks is young French defender Issa Diop. The 21-year-old, who captained France at U19 level, has been a revelation at the back, forming a strong partnership with fellow new arrival Fabian Balbuena.

Brighton are looking for their first league win in six games when they take on West Ham. The Seagulls have lost their last two against Tottenham and Manchester City, but also dropped points against Fulham and Southampton beforehand. Chris Hughton’s mission will once again be to guide the club to another year in the division. Whilst that will always be a tough ask, they have the ability in their squad to avoid the drop; Glenn Murray’s goals will be vital. The 35-year-old has four goals in six starts this season, having notched 14 goals last season.

Unai Emery will be targeting a long run in this competition as domestically success could be difficult in his first season in charge. Chelsea vs MOL Vidi FC – Chelsea face Hungarian Champions MOL Vidi FC looking to continue their solid showing to the Europa League.

It has been a very strong start to the season for Chelsea and new manager Mauricio Sarri. The Blues raced off to five consecutive Premier League victories and also won 1-0 at PAOK in this competition.

An uninspired draw against West Ham was a touch disappointing, before rectifying it with a comeback victory against Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup. The two sides met again in the league last weekend. Chelsea performed well with on-fire Eden Hazard netting, before conceding late to a Daniel Sturridge wondergoal in a 1-1 draw.

This puts Chelsea into third place with an undefeated start, racking up five victories from their first seven. Liverpool and Manchester City are marginally ahead, with six wins and a draw apiece.

Whilst the Europa League can often seem like a distraction, Chelsea should have the tools to successfully navigate it. More wins can bring more confidence and the squad seems perfectly capable of doing so.

The second matchday brings the challenge of Hungarian Champions MOL Vidi FC (recently changed from Videoton FC). The disparity between the two teams is obvious, but manager Marko Nikolic will be hoping for a legendary scalp. The like of which is common practice in the Europa League.

Vidi are coming off the back of a battling 1-0 win at 11th place (out of 12) Diosygor. Nikolic’s side are in 3rd, eight points off the pace in defending their crown, but with a game in hand. Only four wins from the first eight games spell a mixed start to the season, to say the least.

Chelsea’ inspired by Hazard’s sensational early season-form, will likely prove much too strong. Bate Borisov are the other Group L opponents, who also secured a 2-0 win against Vidi in matchday one. Chelsea should prove too strong for this group in general, wanting to secure qualification as quickly as possible.

The referee for this one will be Miroslav Zelinka, of the Czech Republic. Zelinka has officiated two Europa League qualifying matches this season, giving a huge 15 yellow cards out in the process. With Chelsea having a very good disciplinary record this term and will be the team undoubtedly on the front foot, they may be safe from that level of punishment. The opposite could be true for Vidi, however.

Despite the almost certain changes to the team after tough back-to-back ventures against Liverpool, perhaps even the imperious Hazard, Chelsea will surely continue their good form and swat away Vidi. It would take something remarkable for the outcome to be anything otherwise.

Napoli vs Liverpool: Liverpool will be looking to follow up on their dramatic 3-2 win over PSG last time out when they face Napoli in their second Champions League group game.

The Reds made the perfect start to their new European campaign as they beat PSG 3-2 thanks to a 90th-minute Roberto Firmino strike. That win has given Liverpool some early breathing room in Group C. With such a tough group, it is vital Jurgen Klopp’s side make the most of home advantage. Now they face a trip to Napoli, one of the toughest away trips in Europe. Liverpool, however, are in their best form since Klopp arrived at Anfield. They remain unbeaten in the Premier League, after Daniel Sturridge’s sublime 88th-minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. That draw did see them drop to second, but they’re only behind Manchester City on goal difference.

Sturridge has proven he can be a valuable asset to the Reds this season. With so many games, the Englishman will be needed to contribute from the bench. He started and scored in their win against PSG, proving he is still capable of causing problems on the biggest stage. There has never been any question over his ability, but injuries have hampered his progress over the last three seasons. Now, he seems to be rediscovering his groove, which can only be a good thing for Liverpool and England supporters.

Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw with Red Star Belgrade in their opening match in Group C. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have continued their winning form from last season in Serie A, however. They currently sit in second place, with 15 points from their opening seven games. Napoli are already six points behind Juventus, but having lost Maurizio Sarri and Jorgino in the summer, it’s fair to say they are performing well. They have won three of their last five games in all competition, with last Saturday’s defeat to Juventus their only blip.

Viktor Kassai is the referee for this game. The Hungarian has plenty of experience in Europe, having officiated three group games last season, including Liverpool’s game against Maribor. He has an average card total of 4.61 across 144 international games. Therefore, I would advise a maximum total of 60+ points for this fixture.

Liverpool have endured a tough run of fixtures with more to come. They’ve played Chelsea twice in a week and host Manchester City on Sunday. As a result, I think this game will end in a draw, which would still be a positive result for Klopp’s men.
