Uruguay vs Portugal – Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to add to his four World Cup goals as European Champions Portugal face Uruguay in the round of 16.

Ronaldo occupies second place in the race for the golden boot. The Real Madrid forward is level with Romelu Lukaku on four – both one goal behind Harry Kane. Portugal finished second in Group A, despite finishing level on points with Spain. Their 1-1 draw with Iran in their final group game was littered with controversy. First, Ronaldo missed a penalty, before Iran scored one of their own in the 93rd minute, which was harshly awarded for a handball by Cedric Soares. Iran then had a late chance to win the game and send themselves through to the knockout rounds instead of Portugal.

dThis highlighted the fact that, despite being in a position of control, Portugal nearly threw away their World Cup status in a matter of minutes. Like Argentina, they aren’t a fantastic overall side. They do have Ronaldo, though, who is a match winner on his own. They have the ability to go toe to toe with the best, as they showed against Spain, but they can also lose against anyone.

Uruguay, by contrast, are yet to concede at the World Cup. Three clean sheets and three wins in three games; an unmatched record. Luis Suarez appears to have blown off his early-tournament cobwebs after picking up his second goal in two games against Russia. Edison Cavani also broke his duck for the competition, as they produced a much more fluid performance in a new formation. The 3-5-2 system offered Uruguay much better balance in midfield, whilst also allowing Cavani and Suarez to play up front together. Arsenal target Lucas Torreira and Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentacur looked assured in midfield, whilst width was provided by both wing-backs. With Deigo Godin in defence, there is no surprise they are yet to concede. It may take one of the world’s best to find a way past the Uruguay rearguard.

Cesar Arturo Ramos is the referee for Brazil’s opening game. The Mexican is making his World Cup debut on Sunday. In 29 international matches he has averaged 2.71 yellow cards and 0.1 reds, awarding 0.14 penalties per game along the way. Therefore, I would recommend a maximum of 30+ booking points for any bets.

This is a tough game to call, as both sides have offered contrasting performances during this tournament. Against Spain, Portugal were fantastic. The same for Uruguay, against Russia. In the other games, both sides offered little, which as a result makes this tough to call. I think this one could be a draw, with extra time or penalties needed to separate them.

Uruguay vs Portugal will be televised live in the UK on ITV 1 with kick off at 19:00 GMT.

Prediction: Uruguay 1-1 Portugal

Suggested Tips –  Uruguay vs Portugal – (SKYBET):

  • Correct score: Draw 1-1 – 9/2.
  • To score and win – Luis Suarez – 11/4.
  • 1st Goalscorer – Cristiano Ronaldo – 3/1.
  • Portugal to Win on Penalties – 10/1.
  • Either team to win in Extra Time – 5/1.

FIFA World Cup 2018, Round of 16, Kazan Stadium, Kazan

Live on BBC 1 – Kick-Off: 15:00

France vs Argentina – the French meet Argentina in the first knockout game of the World Cup with both sides desperate to earn a place in the last eight of the competition.

With both teams needing a point, France played out a drab goalless draw with Denmark to ensure top spot in Group C. Didier Deschamps opted to make several changes for that game, resting Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Hugo Lloris. However, given France’s embarrassment of riches with their squad, they should have produced a much better performance. France are still yet to impress in Russia despite remaining unbeaten.

Despite their undoubted individual quality, we are yet to see a cohesive, fluent performance. It is a task that many have struggled with in recent years. Belgium, previous to this tournament, have had the same problem. How do you get the best out of such a fantastic group of players? How do you fit them all in? One player who has looked his usual self is Ngolo Kante. He has become one of France’s most important players in central midfield. He will be vital to their hopes of moving into the quarter-finals.

Lionel Messi’s first goal of the World Cup coincided with Argentina’s first win. Their 2-1 victory over Nigeria was enough to smuggle them into the last 16, on goal difference. After seriously disappointing in the first two games it was a much-improved performance from them, although they still left plenty to be desired. There is no getting away from the fact this is one of Argentina’s worst sides in years. Messi aside, they are desperately poor, especially in defence and midfield. Although Ever Banega’s inclusion added some creativity in midfield, they have looked desperately lacking in the middle of the park. That has forced Messi deeper, making him less of a goal threat.

Alireza Faghani is the referee for Saturday’s game. He is a referee with international pedigree, having refereed the finals of the 2014 AFC Champions League, 2015 AFC Asian Cup, 2015 Club World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. The Iranian official averages 4.4 cards per game and therefore I’d advise a maximum booking points total of 40+.

Neither of these two sides have set the tournament alight so far. Argentina were very fortunate to even make it this far but they do have Messi. France need to improve; a better performance from them should see them win this game. With only six goals in six between the two team, I think this will be a game settled by fine margins, but I am siding with France.

France vs Argentina is televised in the UK live on BBC 1 with kick off at 15:00.

Prediction: France 2-1 Argentina

Suggested Tips – France vs Argentina – (SKYBET):

  • France to win by exactly one goal – 11/4.
  • France win 2-1 – 10/1.
  • 1st Goalscorer – Antoinee Griezmann – 11/2.
  • Anytime Goalscorer – Lionel Messi – 6/4.
  • RequestABet Specials Up to 10/1 – Over 1.5 goals, Griezmann & Messi 1+ Shots on Target each, 3+ corners each team and 10+ booking points each team – 7/2. (NAP).

  • RequestABet Specials 80/1 and above – Draw 0-0, and no booking points – 200/1. (0.25pt Outsider).

  • Giroud to score a header and Messi to score from outside the area – 125/1(0.25pt Outsider).

England vs Belgium
Thursday 28th June 2018
FIFA World Cup 2018, Group G, Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad

Live on ITV 1 – Kick-Off: 19:00

England vs Belgium – With both sides already safely through to the last 16, England and Belgium will battle it out for top spot in Group G.

England ran riot against Panama on Sunday, with a stunning 6-1 win. The Three Lions were 5-0 up at the break before Harry Kane completed his first World-Cup hattrick in the second half. Those goals took the Spurs striker to five for the tournament, making him the competition’s leading scorer. Jesse Lingard scored the pick of the goals with a fantastic curling effort from outside the area, whilst John Stones scored a brace of headers. With eyes on England’s potential RO16 opponents from Group H, many have suggested finishing in second place could be more beneficial. Group H’s final games kick off at 3pm the same day, meaning England will know their potential paths in the knockout rounds depending on where they finish.

They currently top the group on fair play, having received one less yellow card than Belgium. Both sides have identical points, goals scored and goals conceded. If it turns out England would prefer to finish second, we could see a flurry of yellow cards, if the scoreline is a draw. Gareth Southgate may also be tempted into resting some key players, with little riding on this game.

Belgium also secured their place in the knockout rounds in emphatic style. Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard both grabbed two as they won 5-2 against Tunisia. However, the pair were withdrawn after 65 minutes after picking up minor knocks that could see them rested against England. Roberto Martinez is expected to make mass changes, to keep his squad fresh for the latter stages of the competition.

Damir Skomina is the referee for this game. The Slovenian took charge of the Three Lions embarrassing defeat to Iceland, just two years ago. He has averaged 4.12 yellow cards over 145 international games. Therefore, I would advise a maximum booking points total of 40+.

Knowing Southgate, he will want England to go and win the game, irrespective of their potential RO16 opponent. Winning breeds confidence which therefore helps to build momentum. Although, with that being said, neither side will risk any injuries, which could see a slower-paced game. I personally think both sides will settle for a draw.

Prediction: England 1-1 Belgium

Suggested Tips –  England vs Belgium – (BET365):

  • Draw 1-1 – (link no longer available).

Suggested Tips – England vs Belgium – (SKYBET):

  • Both Players to Score – Batshuayi and Kane – 6/1.
    – Both nations talismans, they will both get chances to score in the match.
  • 1st Goalscorer – Marcus Rashford – 6/1.
    – The flair, pace and deadly finish that this guy possesses makes him the best player on the pitch. He will be determined to sink the Serbians early on.
  • RequestABet Specials Up to 10/1 – England to win & BTTS – 9/2.
  • RequestABet Specials 80/1 and above – Draw 1-1, 3+ corners each team and no booking points – 125/1. (0.25pt Outsider).

  • RequestABet Specials 80/1 and above – Draw 0-0, under 12 corners and 30+ booking points each team – 100/1. (0.25pt Outsider).

Panama vs Tunisia – Panama take on Tunisia with both sides looking to restore some pride after being knocked out of the World Cup.

As expected when the groups were drawn out last year, neither Panama or Tunisia stand a chance of making it into the round of 16. Both sides have lost each game, conceding 17 goals between them in the process. Panama can’t compete at this level, which was highlighted in their performance against England. Despite keeping Belgium to 0-0 until the second-half, they were 5-0 down at the interval against the Three Lions. They seemed more intent on kicking and disrupting England’s play, than trying to play football themselves. Panama did, however, give their fans something to cheer about with their first ever World Cup goal, although it did arrive with the scoreline at 6-0. They’ll be hoping to notch their first ever win at this tournament and avoid finishing bottom of Group G.

Despite being Africa’s highest-ranked side, Tunisia have failed to perform at this World Cup. They were unlucky to concede in the 90th minute against England, although they deserved to lose the game, but they capitulated against Belgium. That 5-2 loss included some lackadaisical, haphazard defending, which has been their major downfall in both games. They’re clearly a capable side; Senegal have performed admirably at this tournament, and they are higher ranked than them. They simply haven’t translated their qualifying form into the tournament – their players froze on the big stage. At the back, they have been awful and showed no signs of tactical awareness or defensive organisation. They have, however, shown intent in front of goal, scoring three goals in two games.

Nawaf Shukralla is the referee for this game. He has an average of 3.98 yellow cards per and 0.23 reds across 102 international matches. Therefore, I would suggest a maximum of 30+ total booking points for this match.

Neither of these sides have offered much in their two matches, but I do think Tunisia are the better side. They also carry a much bigger goal-threat, although this game could be an entertaining watch for the defending, or lack of, on show.

Prediction: Panama 1-3 Tunisia

Suggested Tips –  Panama vs Tunisia – (BET365):

  • Tunisia win – 3-1 – (link no longer available).

Suggested Tips – Panama vs Tunisia – (SKYBET):

  • Scorecast Boost – Double Chance – Roman Torres to score first and either Panama to win 2-1 or Draw 2-2 – 150/1.
    – Both nations talismans, they will both get chances to score in the match.
  • Price Boost – Wahbi Khazri – 1st Goalscorer – 5/1.

Senegal vs Colombia
Thursday 28th June 2018
FIFA World Cup 2018, Group H, Samara Arena, Samara

Live on BBC 1 – Kick-Off: 15:00

Senegal vs Colombia – Group H comes to a fiery close with Senegal and Colombia both harbouring aspirations of qualifying in this winner-takes-all affair.

With Poland already eliminated, the remaining three teams in Group H are all battling for the top two spots. This group has been hotly contested with a few surprise results to boot. Japan are currently top, which causes some interesting permutations for either side to qualify.

Senegal’s first two matches were a dominant 2-1 victory over Poland and a 2-2 draw with Japan. So, Aliou Cisse’s side have four points, the same as Japan, who beat Colombia 2-1 in their opening game. Colombia’s last match was a 3-0 hammering of the lacklustre Poland, so Jose Pekerman’s team are a point off the pace.

Hence, Senegal need just a point to guarantee passage into the knockout stages. Colombia can also afford to draw as long as Japan lose, due to their superior goal difference. Senegal can also lose should Japan get beaten by Poland by a greater margin. This makes for an incredibly interesting last matchday in Group H, where truly anything could happen.

Colombia’s last match showcased everything we expected of the South Americans. Energy, pace, flair and incisive passing were met with clinical finishing to swat Poland away. James Rodriguez crucially proved what a world-beater he is by turning on the style. Particularly with his glorious through ball for Juan Cuadrado’s, and Colombia’s third goal. Rodriguez to score first and Colombia to win 3-1 is a massive 80/1 with SkyBet.

Senegal have also been an absolute pleasure to watch. They have completely dispelled the reductionist claims that African teams are tactically inept. Yes, Senegal have the overused phrase ‘pace and power’ in abundance but more than that The Lions of Terunga are defensively sound and the midfield has a lovely balance to it. The positional awareness of the side allows the destructive forward players such as Sadio Mane to wreak havoc.

This was prevalent in Mbaye Niang’s goal against Poland, putting pressure on and capitalising on the woeful Polish defending. Niang to score first and Senegal to win 1-0 or draw 1-1 is a very big 28/1 with SkyBet.

Whichever of the two sides makes it through, perhaps it could even be both, they will surely be deserved. It is important to note that the winner of this group will face second place in England’s group and vice-versa. England vs either Senegal or Colombia could be a fascinating watch.

Prediction – Senegal 1-2 Colombia

Suggested Tips –  Senegal vs Colombia – (BET365):

  • Colombia to Win – 2-1 – (link no longer available).

Suggested Tips –  Senegal vs Colombia – (SKYBET):

  • Over 1.5 goals, 3+ Senegal corners, 5+ Colombia corners and 10+ booking points each team – 15/8.
  • Niang 1+ shots on target & Rodriguez 1+ shots on target– 5/4. (NAP).
  • Mane to score, 4+ Corners each team and Davidson Sanchez to be carded – 33/1

Japan vs Poland
Thursday 28th June 2018
FIFA World Cup 2018, Group H, Volgograd Arena, Volgograd

Live on BBC 2 – Kick-Off: 15:00

Japan vs Poland – Group H comes to a head as Japan know a draw against Poland will take them to the last 16.

Both these sides have surprised at this tournament, but for contrasting reasons. Japan ground out a 2-1 victory against group favourites Colombia in the first match. Then, the Blue Samurai earned a 2-2 draw against the impressive Senegal in a fantastic match last time out.

Poland opened their World Cup account by succumbing to a meagre 2-1 loss to Senegal. The last match was even worse, getting destroyed 3-0 by a rampant Colombia. Those two poor results and performances have seen Poland eliminated from the competition. Even more disappointing when you consider Poland haven’t played a friendly in a year to guarantee seeding for this tournament.

Japan have played their way into a great position in the group. Akira Nishino’s team currently lead Group H and with Colombia and Senegal playing a winner-takes-all match in the other game, a draw is all Japan need to qualify for the last 16 for the third time.

The permutations are actually even more complicated than that. Senegal are currently level on points and goal difference. Colombia are a point behind but have +1 better goal difference. If Japan lose by more goals than Colombia beat Senegal, then Japan can slip out into third place. It is still massively all to play for, the job is not yet done.

This gives Poland an opportunity to actually make a mark on this tournament. History is against them though. The Eagles have not kept a clean sheet at the World Cup since 1986, conceding 23 times in ten games. Both score no draw seems a good bet at 7/4 with SkyBet. If a rampant Poland turn up seeking revenge they will surely win.

If that Poland side doesn’t turn up, Japan will surely use that momentum and be undefeated in all group stage games for the first time since 2002. Takashi Inui has been on fire, scoring three in his last three for Japan after just two in his previous 26. Inui to score first and Japan win is an outside shot at 18/1 with bet365.

VAR could once again have an impact, as it has on most games. There to be an official VAR review 2+ times is 10/1 with SkyBet. Complimenting that bet, either Japan or Poland to score a penalty is 6/1 with bet365.

Prediction – Japan 1-2 Poland

Poland to throw a spanner in the works and show up for the first time this tournament.

Suggested Tips –  Japan vs Poland – (BET365):

  • Poland to Win – 2-1 – (link no longer available).

Suggested Tips –  Japan vs Poland – (SKYBET):

  • Both Score No Draw – 7/4.
  • Inui to score and Japan win – 6/1
  • Robert Lewandowski to score first – 4/1

Live on ITV 4 – Kick-Off: 19:00

Switzerland vs Costa Rica. Switzerland and Costa Rica will face off in their final group stage match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland are currently second in the group and will require a result from this match in order to progress to the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Costa Rica’s tournament will come to a disappointing end at full-time. They lost both their matches against Serbia and Brazil.

Switzerland could be depleted for the match as their two star players Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka could face two-match bans. Both performed ‘politically incorrect’ celebrations in their 2-1 victory over Serbia. They are currently priced at 4/5 to win their final group match on SkyBet with those two’s availability unsure.

If Shaqiri is able to play, there is no doubt he could  steal the headlines and see his nation progress. He is priced at 7/4 to score anytime and 9/1 to score a brace.

Costa Rica have been disappointing given their impressive showing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They have only recorded three shots on target in the tournament, with all three coming from their 1-0 loss to Serbia. Their defensive efforts against Brazil were unceremoniously undone in the 91st minute to end their campaign. They are priced at 9/2 to cause an upset.

Marco Urena is the Costa Rican’s biggest goal threat. The Los Angeles FC striker is yet to find the back of the net but is priced at 10/3 to score anytime.

The referee for this match will be Clement Turpin. Both nations have been rather well behaved up to now, so I wouldn’t expect a wrestling match like some of the other World Cup matches so far.

Switzerland vs Costa Rica will be televised live in the UK on ITV 4 with kick-off at 19:00 GMT.

Prediction – Switzerland 2-0 Costa Rica

Suggested Tips – Switzerland vs Costa Rica – (BET365):

Serbia will play Brazil in their final group stage match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup final. Both nations are in a position to qualify for the knockout stages, with the result from the other match in Group E maybe being a key factor.

Serbia are currently on three points in the group after their dramatic defeat to Switzerland in their last outing. Aleksandar Mitrovic’s early goal was not enough for the Serbians who struggled to keep possession throughout the match. They are priced at 11/2 to win the match on SkyBet.

They have also racked up the cards so far, with six cards in their four matches. With the tricky Brazilian attack running at their defence, it’s likely they could see a few more cards.

Brazil are first in the group with four points. They haven’t yet provided a dominant display but have proved their attacking flair. Their recent 2-0 victory over Costa Rica seemed to be heading for a draw before two stoppage time goals from Coutinho and Neymar.

They are favourites for this match and rightly so. SkyBet have them priced at 8/15 to win. They could ramp up the goal tally and are priced at 21/10 to score 3+ goals. This will require Neymar and Gabriel Jesus to become a little more clinical – a feat they are more than capable of.

Mitrovic and Neymar are the two biggest goal threats for each nation. You can back both players to score at 6/1 which is a very tempting market. The game should produce a few goals and these two players can score from plenty of different methods.

The referee for this encounter will be Alireza Faghani . He could be kept busy with the aforementioned abrasive Serbia however with so much at stake, I’d expect the Brazilians to also bring a physical aspect to the match.

Prediction: Serbia 1 – 3 Brazil

Suggested Tips –  Serbia vs Brazil – (BET365):

  • Brazil win – 3-1 – (link no longer available).

Suggested Tips – Serbia vs Brazil – (SKYBET):

South Korea vs Germany
Wednesday 27th June 2018
FIFA World Cup 2018, Group FKazan Arena, Kazan

Live on BBC 1 – Kick-Off: 15:00

Group F culminates as reigning World Champions Germany face South Korea needing to better Sweden’s result to resist elimination.

It is do or die for Germany. Die Mannschaft have been at the epicentre of dram at every turn so far in Russia. Mexico royally threw a spanner in the works with a wonderful performance in a 1-0 victory against the holders in the group’s first match, before Toni Kroos rescued the Germans with a magnificent injury-time goal to steal a 2-1 win against Sweden last time out.

Bizarrely, that was just Germany’s second win in their last eight fixtures too, the other coming against Saudi Arabia (2-1).

Kroos’ goal very much felt like it could be one of huge significance in this tournament. Joachim Low will certainly hope so, although there is still plenty to address in his side. The defence looks fragile, resulting in Jerome Boateng’s rash and eventually deserved red card against Sweden. The midfield looks lethargic and overrun. In attacking areas chances are being created but they are even more frequently being squandered.

One would still be bold to write off Germany, however. There is depth, experience and quality throughout the entire squad. It could also be potentially ideal to be playing against South Korea who have nothing to play for. For 2010 Golden Boot winner Thomas Muller to score and Germany to win 2-0 or 3-1 is 18/1 with SkyBet. That is a very alluring Scorecast Boost.

Losing 1-0 to Sweden, then 2-1 to Mexico, Shin Tae-Yung’s side having nothing to play for in terms of qualification. However, this could be a poisoned chalice. The shackles may come off, especially with a vulnerable German side in front of them. Motivation should never be a factor when facing the World Champions. The prize in itself is beating the best team in the world.

Whilst perhaps unfortunate against Sweden, there is no denying that Mexico were dominant against South Korea. Even still, The Reds created opportunities in both matches and are no slouches. Son Heung-min’s wonderful strike to make it 2-1 against Mexico proves that the quality is there. The Spurs attacker to score at anytime is a boosted 4/1 with SkyBet, but Timo Werner at the same price seems like smarter money.

A point of note though is that Germany haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last seven games. Should that continue, it would surely be Son who is the player to capitalise. Both teams to score and Germany to win is 13/8 with SkyBet.

This Germany side could be there for the taking. If we have learned anything about Germany though, is that they always tend to pull through. There is too much at stake and too much quality on the pitch not to.

South Korea vs Germany will be televised live in the UK on BBC 1 with kick-off at 15:00 GMT.

FIFA World Cup 2018, Group FEkaterinburg Arena, Ekaterinburg

Live on BBC 2 – Kick-Off: 15:00

Mexico and Sweden will lock horns in their final group stage match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Mexicans have been a breath of fresh air thus far in the tournament, showcasing an energetic, attacking brand of football. Meanwhile, the Swedish have remained a firm outfit and have earned three points from their two outings.

Mexico currently top Group F with two wins from two; the more impressive coming in their 1-0 victory over Germany. Their attacking prowess has been one of the best surprises so far at the tournament with Javier Hernandez leading the line superbly. The West Ham striker seems to have recalled his past form from his days at Old Trafford and is priced by SkyBet at 9/2 to strike first.

Sweden were unfortunate to not get a draw against Germany. A very late freekick from Toni Kroos sank Swedish hearts who did have their chances to finish the Germans off. Ola Toivenen scored a delightful goal in their last match and will be the go-to-guy if Sweden are to get a result from this match. The Toulouse striker is priced at 11/4 to score anytime.

A win for Mexico, priced at 7/5, would see them top the table with maximum points and Sweden’s knockout hopes would be slim, if not impossible. A reverse victory, priced at 11/5, would likely see Sweden through whilst the fate of Mexico would depend on the other result in their group. A draw would secure Mexico’s top spot but leave Sweden relying on South Korea beating the Germans.

The referee for this match is Nestor Pintana. Both nations have been very well mannered so don’t expect too many cards.

Mexico vs Sweden will be televised live in the UK on BBC 2 with kick-off at 15:00 GMT.

Prediction: Mexico 2 – 0 Sweden.

  • Correct Score Group Betting – Mexico to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 – 21/10(NAP).
