Uruguay vs France – both nations will lock horns this Friday in the first of four quarter-finals ties of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Neither nations have been at their best for the duration of the competition yet. Uruguay’s strike force of Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani finally seemed to click in their last match. Meanwhile, France’s clinical attack seemed to have now settled, as they ran out 4-3 victors against Argentina in the round of 16.

A wave of optimism and patriotism has overcome the ever-vociferous England fans during this campaign. An injury time winner in the first match against Tunisia and Panama’s 6-1 demolishing have helped instil belief. Harry Kane topping the Golden Boot charts with five (including a hat-trick against Panama) solidifies this. The Spurs hitman has scored at a rate of one every 31 minutes so far this tournament. The last match against Belgium was a dead rubber. Both sides made wholesale changes as England slumped to a 1-0 defeat via Adnan Januzai’s great goal. Gareth Southgate’s side still first have to navigate a difficult task in the form of Colombia. Jose Pekerman’s side destroyed Poland 3-0, playing some brilliant football, before earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal (courtesy of a Yerry Mina header) in the winner-takes-all last group stage game.

A lot of the pre-match talk has been involving Colombia’s star man James Rodriguez. The Bayern Munich playmaker came off in the first half against Senegal and is a major doubt for this game. His absence will be a huge boost for England as everything goes through his mercurial talent.

Colombia still possess quality throughout the team though, Radamel Falcao, Juan Cuadrado, Juan Quintero are all dangerous going forward whilst Mina and Davison Sanchez of Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur respectively are at the heart of defence. Sweden and Switzerland both battled through difficult groups to earn the chance to play each other for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Whilst this may not be the most appetising of the last 16 clashes, neither team should be underestimated. Switzerland were value for their point against Brazil and Sweden were cruelly beaten by Toni Kroos’ last-minute wonder goal.

Switzerland proceeded to pick up four points from their remaining two matches (2-1 vs Serbia and 2-2 vs Costa Rica). Sweden opened their campaign with a rugged 1-0 win against South Korea before smashing the previously excellent Mexico 3-0. The latter result was a massive shock, especially as Mexico had so deservedly beaten Germany beforehand.

Switzerland are currently at their joint-highest ever World Ranking at 9th place. Manager Vladimir Petkovic will see this as a fantastic opportunity to reach a first World Cup quarter-final in 64 years. The Rossocrociati have lost just once in 20 matches. Incredible. Defence has been key to that outstanding run, keeping 11 clean sheets during that period.

Going forward has often been the issue for Switzerland against better teams. However, Xherdan Shakiri seems to be firing on all cylinders and forward Josep Drmic got on the scoresheet last time out. Mix a Granit Xhaka screamer in there (like he did against Serbia) and the potential to score is present.

Long gone are the days of Sweden’s World Cup success, but now have their defence to thank for being in this great position to try and replicate it. Janne Anderson’s team have kept four clean sheets in their last five games and have only conceded more than once to Germany, Chile and Netherlands in their last 13 (where they still only conceded twice). The attack is definitely the issue for Sweden though. Only two players in the entire squad having scored more than eight international goals (Ola Toivonen with 14 and Marcus Berg with 18).

Set pieces have been pivotal for Sweden and may present their best chance to win this tie. Captain Granqvist is The Swedes’ top scorer at the tournament with two penalties. Sweden will be heavily relying on the talents of RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg for creativity. A first World Cup quarter-final in 24 years could depend on it.

This may not be the most fluid and attractive game of football but it will be an intriguing one nonetheless. Both perennial underdogs, but something has got to give. It will more than likely be decided by a mistake or a moment of magic. The reward? Facing the victor of England and Colombia in the last eight. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Brazil vs Mexico is the first of two Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup this Monday.

Brazil are many people’s favourite to win the competition, following the shock exit of Germany. Neymar and Coutinho have been their flamboyant selves and took most of the plaudits throughout the group stage. Mexico have been a surprise package of the tournament so far. They qualified second from Group F after taking a 3-0 spanking from Sweden. However, their earlier performances against Germany and South Korea earnt their spot in the knockout rounds.

Brazil, priced at 1/2 by SkyBet, are the obvious favourites for this encounter. Their talent from front to back is undeniably one of the most dangerous in the tournament and this was illustrated in their last outing against Serbia. Unlikely goal scorers Paulinho and Thiago Silva secured top spot for the Samba Boys but their front three and Coutinho were causing all sorts of problems.

Neymar is the obvious potent goal threat for the Brazilians and is priced at 11/4 to score first. However, Coutinho has been joining the counter attacks and utilizing his pace, dribbling ability and eye for goal. He could be worth backing to score first at 5/1.

Despite their very poor showing against Sweden, Mexico have that aura about them that they can pull off something special. Winger Hirving Lozano has been one of the best players of the tournament and Javier Hernandez has also been putting in great shifts along Carlos Vela. The squad is very evenly balanced however they will struggle to see much of the ball against this Brazilian side.

West Ham striker Hernandez is the Mexicans target man and is priced at 11/4 to score anytime.

Croatia vs Denmark – Two of the world’s finest midfielders go head to head as Luka Modric and Cristian Eriksen both hope to lead their sides into the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Croatia topped Group D with three wins out of three. Their last-gasp 2-1 win against Iceland extended their winning run as Ivan Perisic grabbed his first goal of the tournament. After blowing past Argentina, Croatia have gone down as mosts ‘dark horses’ for the competition. By winning the group they have avoided meeting Brazil, Portugal and France. Spain could stand in their way in the quarter-finals, but as they say ‘you have to beat the best to be the best’.

Modric has already proven he is one of the best in this tournament. He has carried his form for Real Madrid into the Blue of Croatia and has led by example. In a more advanced role, Modric has shown his magic with fantastic vision, passes and even a couple of goals. For me, he is the best midfielder in the world at the moment and is so crucial to this Croatia side.

Denmark played out a dull 0-0 draw with France to confirm their spot in the last 16. The Dane’s remain unbeaten after picking up two draws and a win in Group C. Their success has been built on a solid foundation at the back; they’ve conceded just one goal in the tournament and 0 from open play. Andreas Christiansen played in a less familiar holding midfield role against France but I would expect him to return to the heart of the defence going forward. In attack Eriksen has been at his usual best; keeping Denmark ticking over. With one goal to his name, the Spurs’ midfielder has continued his best ever scoring season at international level. Like Modric, Eriksen is Denmark’s conductor and all their best play flows through him. It will be a really interesting matchup to see how both sides try to stop the other’s maestro.

Nestor Pitana is the referee for this game. The Argentina official has averaged 4.67 yellow cards and 0.25 red card per game across 84 international matches. Therefore, I would advise a maximum total of 40+ booking points for this game. Penalties may also be a good shout, with Pitana averaging a penalty every 0.2 games; with VAR involved that percentage is only likely to increase.

Croatia have a lot of big game players with plenty of experience. Denmark, by contrast, are a relatively inexperienced group and that could tell. I don’t think there will be a lot in the game and therefore Croatia’s extra knowhow could see them pinch a spot in the last eight.

Spain vs Russia – Spain take on hosts Russia in the first knockout round with both sides desperate to move into the last eight of the World Cup.

Spain topped Group B after a 90th-minute equaliser from Iago Aspas preserved their unbeaten start to the World Cup. They looked on course for a shock defeat against bottom side Morocco before the Celta Vigo forward back-heeled them level. Spain have struggled defensively in this tournament, conceding five goals in the Group Stages. Despite having one of the most coveted backlines and ‘keepers in the tournament, Spain have shown they can be got at.

They struggled to handle the pace and power of Cristiano Ronaldo in their opening match against Portugal, which could cause concern as they enter the latter stages of the tournament. In attack, Isco continued his fine start in Russia by adding his first goal whilst Diego Costa continued to torment after three goals in his first two games.

Russia came crashing back down to earth with a thump following their 3-0 defeat to Uruguay. That result left them second in Group A, despite winning their first two games. Russia manager Stanislav Chercesov made a number of changes, resting key players, and his side’s task was made even tougher as they went down to ten men in the first half. As a result, second choice right-back Igor Smolnikov will miss this match through suspension. This is the first game we have seen Russia struggle in, in what could be argued as their first real test. Although they did make changes, I think this was a sign that they will struggle against the bigger nations. They do possess plenty of pace and hard-working midfielders though and will play on the counter-attack to try and expose Spain.

Bjorn Kuipers is the referee for this game. The Ducthman plies his trade is the Eridevisie where he has averaged 4.33 cards per game across 15 league games. Therefore, I would advise a maximum total of 40+ booking points for this game.

Spain have proven they are capable of being beaten. They got out of jail against Morocco, but still topped their group. Russia struggled against Uruguay in their first major challenge. I’m not sure they will have the mentality needed to topple Spain. Their players may freeze on the big stage, with the weight of the country on their shoulders. As a result, I’m plumping for a Spain win.

Uruguay vs Portugal – Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to add to his four World Cup goals as European Champions Portugal face Uruguay in the round of 16.

Ronaldo occupies second place in the race for the golden boot. The Real Madrid forward is level with Romelu Lukaku on four – both one goal behind Harry Kane. Portugal finished second in Group A, despite finishing level on points with Spain. Their 1-1 draw with Iran in their final group game was littered with controversy. First, Ronaldo missed a penalty, before Iran scored one of their own in the 93rd minute, which was harshly awarded for a handball by Cedric Soares. Iran then had a late chance to win the game and send themselves through to the knockout rounds instead of Portugal.

dThis highlighted the fact that, despite being in a position of control, Portugal nearly threw away their World Cup status in a matter of minutes. Like Argentina, they aren’t a fantastic overall side. They do have Ronaldo, though, who is a match winner on his own. They have the ability to go toe to toe with the best, as they showed against Spain, but they can also lose against anyone.

Uruguay, by contrast, are yet to concede at the World Cup. Three clean sheets and three wins in three games; an unmatched record. Luis Suarez appears to have blown off his early-tournament cobwebs after picking up his second goal in two games against Russia. Edison Cavani also broke his duck for the competition, as they produced a much more fluid performance in a new formation. The 3-5-2 system offered Uruguay much better balance in midfield, whilst also allowing Cavani and Suarez to play up front together. Arsenal target Lucas Torreira and Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentacur looked assured in midfield, whilst width was provided by both wing-backs. With Deigo Godin in defence, there is no surprise they are yet to concede. It may take one of the world’s best to find a way past the Uruguay rearguard.

Cesar Arturo Ramos is the referee for Brazil’s opening game. The Mexican is making his World Cup debut on Sunday. In 29 international matches he has averaged 2.71 yellow cards and 0.1 reds, awarding 0.14 penalties per game along the way. Therefore, I would recommend a maximum of 30+ booking points for any bets.

This is a tough game to call, as both sides have offered contrasting performances during this tournament. Against Spain, Portugal were fantastic. The same for Uruguay, against Russia. In the other games, both sides offered little, which as a result makes this tough to call. I think this one could be a draw, with extra time or penalties needed to separate them.

Uruguay vs Portugal will be televised live in the UK on ITV 1 with kick off at 19:00 GMT.

France vs Argentina – the French meet Argentina in the first knockout game of the World Cup with both sides desperate to earn a place in the last eight of the competition.

With both teams needing a point, France played out a drab goalless draw with Denmark to ensure top spot in Group C. Didier Deschamps opted to make several changes for that game, resting Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Hugo Lloris. However, given France’s embarrassment of riches with their squad, they should have produced a much better performance. France are still yet to impress in Russia despite remaining unbeaten.

Despite their undoubted individual quality, we are yet to see a cohesive, fluent performance. It is a task that many have struggled with in recent years. Belgium, previous to this tournament, have had the same problem. How do you get the best out of such a fantastic group of players? How do you fit them all in? One player who has looked his usual self is Ngolo Kante. He has become one of France’s most important players in central midfield. He will be vital to their hopes of moving into the quarter-finals.

Lionel Messi’s first goal of the World Cup coincided with Argentina’s first win. Their 2-1 victory over Nigeria was enough to smuggle them into the last 16, on goal difference. After seriously disappointing in the first two games it was a much-improved performance from them, although they still left plenty to be desired. There is no getting away from the fact this is one of Argentina’s worst sides in years. Messi aside, they are desperately poor, especially in defence and midfield. Although Ever Banega’s inclusion added some creativity in midfield, they have looked desperately lacking in the middle of the park. That has forced Messi deeper, making him less of a goal threat.

Alireza Faghani is the referee for Saturday’s game. He is a referee with international pedigree, having refereed the finals of the 2014 AFC Champions League, 2015 AFC Asian Cup, 2015 Club World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. The Iranian official averages 4.4 cards per game and therefore I’d advise a maximum booking points total of 40+.

Neither of these two sides have set the tournament alight so far. Argentina were very fortunate to even make it this far but they do have Messi. France need to improve; a better performance from them should see them win this game. With only six goals in six between the two team, I think this will be a game settled by fine margins, but I am siding with France.

England ran riot against Panama on Sunday, with a stunning 6-1 win. The Three Lions were 5-0 up at the break before Harry Kane completed his first World-Cup hattrick in the second half. Those goals took the Spurs striker to five for the tournament, making him the competition’s leading scorer. Jesse Lingard scored the pick of the goals with a fantastic curling effort from outside the area, whilst John Stones scored a brace of headers. With eyes on England’s potential RO16 opponents from Group H, many have suggested finishing in second place could be more beneficial. Group H’s final games kick off at 3pm the same day, meaning England will know their potential paths in the knockout rounds depending on where they finish.

They currently top the group on fair play, having received one less yellow card than Belgium. Both sides have identical points, goals scored and goals conceded. If it turns out England would prefer to finish second, we could see a flurry of yellow cards, if the scoreline is a draw. Gareth Southgate may also be tempted into resting some key players, with little riding on this game.

Belgium also secured their place in the knockout rounds in emphatic style. Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard both grabbed two as they won 5-2 against Tunisia. However, the pair were withdrawn after 65 minutes after picking up minor knocks that could see them rested against England. Roberto Martinez is expected to make mass changes, to keep his squad fresh for the latter stages of the competition.

Damir Skomina is the referee for this game. The Slovenian took charge of the Three Lions embarrassing defeat to Iceland, just two years ago. He has averaged 4.12 yellow cards over 145 international games. Therefore, I would advise a maximum booking points total of 40+.

Knowing Southgate, he will want England to go and win the game, irrespective of their potential RO16 opponent. Winning breeds confidence which therefore helps to build momentum. Although, with that being said, neither side will risk any injuries, which could see a slower-paced game. I personally think both sides will settle for a draw.
