Champions League – Second Round – First Leg

BT Sport – 7:45pm

Sevilla vs Manchester United – Manchester United take a trip to Spain to face Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie.

A routine 2-0 victory against Huddersfield means Manchester United are still competing on three fronts this campaign. Whilst the league title is out of reach, Jose Mourinho’s side could still end up with two pieces of silverware come the end of the season. United have, however, won two and lost two of their last four games, with both defeats coming on the road. United have won once against a top-six side away from home this season, losing to both Chelsea and Tottenham.

A trademark of previous Mourinho title-winning sides was their ability to get results in the biggest games; something he has yet to achieve since moving to Manchester. With four transfer windows now behind him, Mourinho can no longer argue this isn’t his squad. With the amount of money they have spent, they should be doing better in those big games. These are the matches that separate a good team from the best teams and Mourinho must find a way of tipping these games in his side’s favour.

Romelu Lukaku appears to be re-discovering his form from earlier in the season, with six goals from his last eight matches. The main criticism that has been aired at the Belgian striker is his inability to be the difference in the big games. Away from home against top six sides, Lukaku hasn’t scored, which underlines United’s away woes. There is no doubting he is one of the league’s best strikers; it’s shown by his goal tally, but there is an air of ‘flat track bully’ around him.

Sevilla have won their last three games, which has left them sitting in fifth place in La Liga. At home, Los Nervionenses have lost just once but they have only won one of their last four home games. In the Champions League, they are unbeaten at home, after famously drawing 3-3 with Liverpool from 3-0 down earlier in the competition. Wissam Ben Yedder is the club’s top score(6), whilst Luis Muriel is also a threat up front(7). The club bost a number of former Premier League players, with Steven N’Zonzi, Nolito and Jesus Navas all likely to feature.

Clement Turpin is the referee for this game. The French official plies his trade in Ligue 1 and has an average card total of 4.18 this season. This is quite an average score for a referee from this league, so don’t expect masses of booking points on Wednesday.

Whilst this wasn’t the hardest tie United could have had, it certainly isn’t the easiest. There is definitely a Premier League resurgence in Europe and I think Mourinho’s side will go through over two legs. For this one though, I’d say double chance United or draw would be my bet.

Sevilla vs Manchester United will be televised in the UK on BT Sport with kick off at 19:45 GMT.

Prediction: Sevilla 1-2 Manchester United.

Chelsea vs Barcelona
Tuesday 20th February 2018, Stamford Bridge
UEFA Champions League

BT Sport 1 – 19:45 GMT Kick-Off

Chelsea vs Barcelona – Chelsea will host Barcelona in the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League this Tuesday night. As soon as the draw was made, this fixture seemed to be the one that captured the fans imaginations.

All eyes will be on under pressure manager Antonio Conte as he will be hoping to prove he is the right man for the Chelsea job following a run of poor results and performances. This match will be their biggest test possibly all season, against a Barcelona side who are yet to lose a game in La Liga.

In their four previous outings against each other, they have met in the latter stages of this competition, where games have often been very tight with not much to decide the ties. The hosts have scored two or more goals in the Premier League in 51% of their matches whilst Tuesdays visitors have done it in 83% of theirs. Both squads have proven world class goalscorers in Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud facing off against Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez; all of the aforementioned are capable of snatching a chance, if it comes.

The game could become a rather end to end encounter, with both sides possessing their biggest threats on the counter attack. As the statistics show, their counters have often led to corners as Chelsea have been awarded an average of 6.4 corners in the Premier League and Barcelona have been awarded an average of 5.4 corners. Both clubs also have aerial threats to make one of those corners count.

The occasion is clearly very big for both sides, as any UEFA Champions League match comes with extra pressure. These encounters are often feisty, with many cards being brandished and I don’t see Tuesday night being much different. The referee for this match will be Cuneyt Cakir, a referee renowned for not being very lenient.

The two clubs have a history of abrasive encounters however their discipline this season in the league has both been exemplary. Chelsea have been awarded an average of 14.4 booking points and their Spanish opponents have been awarded an average of 17.1

The match is first of two legs to be played, with the prize being a place in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals. The match will be televised in the UK on BT Sport 1 and kick off at 19:45.

Wigan vs Manchester City
Monday 19th February, DW Stadium
FA Cup 5th Round

BBC One – 20:00 GMT Kick-Off

Wigan vs Manchester City. Wigan Athletic and Manchester City meet in the 5th round of the FA Cup in a repeat of the dramatic 2013 final.

On that occasion, Wigan were a Premier League team. Roberto Martinez’s already-relegated side claimed the trophy with a last-minute Ben Watson goal. The Latics, now managed by Paul Cook and in League One will be even bigger underdogs against a phenomenal Manchester City team with Pep Guardiola at the helm.

It will take some stopping to repel a team that has only failed to score two times in all competitions all season. City have smashed an incredible 79 goals in 27 matches, scoring at least two in 22 of those fixtures. Sergio Aguero has once again been at the heart of that attacking prowess, finding the net 29 times in just 33 appearances this campaign.

The Sky Blues have 12 league clean sheets and the fact they have dropped points in just four games. This sees City with an almost insurmountable 16-point lead at the top of the Premier League. But Guardiola, fresh from a 5-0 demolition of FC Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday, will want to win every trophy possible. Especially seen as they lost in extra-time to Arsenal in the semi-finals of this competition last year.

Wigan have had a very strong season too. They sit in 2nd place with 63 points, level with Blackburn in 3rd. Shrewsbury are just a point ahead at the top but The Latics have a game in hand. Cook’s side will want to put aside the disappointment of the last two games (defeats to Southend United and Blackpool) when welcoming the Premier League Champions-elect. Wigan will surely not lack the motivation to do so.

Anthony Taylor has been confirmed as the official for this one. The English referee is yet to give out a red card in the Premier League so far this season. However, Taylor has dished out a very high average of 3.7 yellow cards per game in his 18 matches this term so that could be the safe bet.

It is hard to look past anything other than a dominant Manchester City victory. Even with what will be a changed side following the trip to Switzerland in the Champions League the depth of talent available should comfortably see the tie through. But stranger things have happened in the FA Cup.

The match will be shown on BBC One with kick-off at 7:55pm.

Leeds United vs Bristol City
Sunday 18th February, Elland Road
Skybet Championship

Sky Sports – 4:30 PM

Leeds United vs Bristol City – Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom will be looking for his first win in charge as they play hosts to play-off rivals Bristol City.

The former Barnsley boss suffered defeat in his first game in charge, as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield United. It was, however, a much-improved performance from the Whites, who will now be looking to build some momentum ahead of next season. I stressed this last week and I will reiterate it again if Leeds are to be successful under Heckingbottom he needs time. Leeds are now eight points behind their visitors this weekend, so three points are absolutely imperative if they’re to hope of making the top six this season. Even if they don’t reach that target this time around, the remainder of this campaign can be used to assess the squad and work out where he needs to strengthen in the summer.

Bristol City currently sit in eighth, three points clear of seventh. Having been in the play-offs for the majority of the season, there is big pressure on Lee Johnson’s men to see through their great season to the end. A run of just one win in their last ten games has put that in jeopardy, with the Robins surrendering a three-goal lead in their last game to draw 3-3 with Sunderland. Results like that can only bread nerves and if they want to secure their place in the top six they need to rediscover their form from earlier in the season. Having lost four of their last five games away from home, that improvement needs to start on Sunday. The return to form and fitness of record signing Famara Diedhiou. The French striker grabbed a brace in their last game and will provide much-needed support for top scorer Bobby Reid.

Simon Hooper has been appointed as the referee for this game, fresh from refereeing Brentford vs Preston last weekend. Hooper has an average booking points total of 41, although he did show five yellow cards and one red in his last match. That was the officials fourth red card of the season, which is one of the lowest in the league. Leeds have won nine of their last 11 meetings, losing just once. The visitor’s last win at Elland Road came back in 1979 and they have lost every visit since.

I expect a tightly contested game on Sunday, with both teams desperate for a vital three points. I think this one will be a draw, which would suit neither side.

Leeds United vs Bristol City will be televised in the UK on Sky Sports with kick-off at 4:30 PM.

Prediction: Leeds 1-1 Bristol City

Suggested tips – Leeds United vs Bristol City – (SKYBET):

  • Correct score, draw 1-1 – 11/2
  • BTTS and Leeds to win – 7/2.
  • Lasogga and Reid to both score – 11/2.
  • Diedhiou to score first and B City to win 2-1 – 30/1.
  • Roofe to score in 90 minutes – 7/4.
  • Scorecast Boost – Leeds United vs Bristol City- Ezgjan Alioski to score first and Leeds to win 2-1 – 60/1

Rochdale vs Tottenham Hotspur
Sunday 18th February 2018, Spotland Stadium Road
FA Cup – Fifth Round

BBC 1 – 12PM Kick-Off

Rochdale vs Tottenham Hotspur – Tottenham Hotspur are back on the road this weekend as they face League One opposition in Rochdale in FA Cup action. The prize is a place in the quarter finals of the competition.

Spurs are fresh from their dramatic comeback in Turin against Juventus in the Champions League, where Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side to restore themselves from an early two goal deficit. Spurs have had no issue finding the back of the net this season on the road, scoring two or more goals in 53% of their away Premier League matches. Against a lower league defence that has conceded 40 goals in 28 goals and sit at the bottom of League One.

Rochdale have had contrasting performances from their FA Cup campaign in comparison to their league campaign. Keith Hill’s side went toe to toe with Championship club Millwall in the last round, where they earned a replay at the Spotland Stadium. Rochdale went on to win the replay 1-0 and continue to have a cup run that has divided fan opinion on whether it’s what the club need. However, a fixture against Premier League opposition is a hard thing to turn down.

The Northern outfit have not faired very well in front of goal this season with two or more goals in only 29% of their league matches. In a more positive sign for Rochdale, they have managed to keep a clean sheet in 41% of their league home matches despite their poor league position. A team that clearly performs better in front of a home crowd, the fans won’t be writing their boys off.

Premier League official Bobby Madley will take charge of this fixture on Sunday. The referee hasn’t been shy to reach into his pocket this season, having awarded an average of 36.2 booking points in his 13 League matches.

FA Cup ties between a Premier League side and a lower league side is often a tighter contest than it seems on paper. This season has already seen some cup shocks; with Rochdale’s antics last round being one of them. Whether this mountain is too tough to climb is yet to be seen, with Spurs on a recent high after their positive return from their midweek trip to Italy. It is also unclear as to what strength side Spurs will name, with strugglers Fernando Llorente and Moussa Sissoko likely to get some more game time.

Rochdale vs Tottenham Hotspur will be televised in the UK on BBC One – kick off at 12PM GMT.

Prediction – Rochdale 0 Spurs 2

Norwich City vs Ipswich Town
Sunday 18th February 2018, Carrow Road
Skybet Championship

Sky Sports 1 – 12pm

Norwich vs Ipswich Town – Norwich host Ipswich in the East Anglia derby looking for a win that would see them do the double over their rivals.

A good run of results has seen Norwich collect ten points from their last five games. With just one defeat in that time, the Canaries have also recorded impressive wins against Middlesbrough and Bristol City, followed by a draw with Derby. Daniel Farke’s men now sit in 13th place, eight points outside the top six. Whilst their recent form has improved, they’re still way off where they would have expected to be at the start of the season. In the summer there will be big pressure on Farke to get the club promoted or risk losing key players in the summer. James Maddison has been one of the Canaries best performers this season and has attracted a number of suitors from the top flight. If Norwich want to keep him, investing well in the summer could be key.

Ipswich sit one place above their rivals but are level on points with them. Town have only lost one of their last four games, which has seen them move clear of the relegation zone. With Mick McCarthy’s men going neither up or down, this game has little significance to the league table. With bragging rights up for grabs, however, it’s arguably their most important game of the season. McCarthy has recently been linked with the vacant Barnsley job but has reiterated his commitment to the Tractor Boys this week. Ipswich have struggled on the road this campaign and have won just one of their four trips away from Portman Road.

Norwich are unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Ipswich and haven’t lost at home since 2006. McCarthy’s side did, however, claim a point on their last visit to Carrow Road with a 1-1 draw in February last year.

David Coote is the official for Sunday’s derby clash, having refereed Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Derby in midweek. Coote has an average booking points total of 45.8 from 18 league games. This is one of the highest in the division, with an average of 4.2 yellow cards and 0.2 red cards per game.

Given Norwich’s recent dominance in this fixture, I think they’ll get another win on the board. The tractor boys haven’t performed well on the road recently, whilst the Canaries have won two of their last three games.

Norwich vs Ipswich Town will be televised live in the UK on Sky Sports from 12PM.

Prediction: Norwich 2-1 Ipswich

Huddersfield vs Manchester United
Friday 15th February 2018, Kirklees Stadium
FA Cup – Fifth Round

BT Sport 2 – 5:30pm

Huddersfield vs Manchester United – Premier League sides Manchester United and Huddersfield Town face off in FA Cup action. The two teams will play for a place in the quarter finals and will be one game away from Wembley Stadium.

Both teams comfortably advanced through the last round, with the hosts, Huddersfield, performing an extra-time extravaganza netting three quick goals in succession against Championship strugglers, Birmingham City. Saturday’s visitors dispatched of Yeovil Town in another FA Cup mismatch.

David Wagner’s Huddersfield will be hoping they can turn their fortunes in front of goal as they have only scored two or more goals in 18% of their Premier League matches this year whilst the visitors have achieved two or more in 55% of their league matches. The clear gap in league positions was illustrated when these two met in the league only a couple weeks ago. Jose Mourinho’s side ran out 2-0 victors however now Huddersfield will have the home advantage that can claim to be a crucial factor in cup scenarios.

Both clubs have also been rather ill-disciplined this season in the Premier League as they have both been awarded an average of 18.3 booking points. Huddersfield have grown a reputation of being a physical side that at the start of the season where very hard to break down, however referee Kevin Friend is one of the more lenient officials in the Premier League as he has only an average of 25 booking points in his 14 matches.

Manchester United will not have much hope in chasing their rivals Manchester City for the Premier League title. As a result it is likely that Mourinho will put more focus into the FA Cup. David Wagner’s side will be focusing on Premier League survival. Whilst a good cup run will boost confidence, the risk of injuries could be too important. It is therefore unsure how strong Huddersfield will line up at the John Smiths Stadium.

With only one leg of this fixture to play, it is likely that Huddersfield could cause an upset however Manchester United’s firepower is a hard factor to look past. With Romelu Lukaku finding his shooting boots with 12 goals and five assists and Alexis Sanchez settling in with the Red Devils, you’d be a brave man to bet against Saturday’s visitors.

Huddersfield vs Manchester United will be televised on BT Sport 2 from 5:30PM in the UK.

Prediction – 1-0 Man Utd.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea City
Saturday 17th February, Hillsborough
FA Cup – fifth round

BT Sport – 12:30pm

Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea – Carlos Carvalhal returns to his old stomping ground as he takes his Swansea side to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday for a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

After leaving Hillsborough on Christmas Eve, eight weeks ago, few would have predicted that Carvalhal would be making such an instant return to his former side. The Portuguese head coach guided the Owls to two top-six finishes during his two and a half year spell at the club, including reaching the play-off final in his first season in charge. I expect Carvalhal to get a good reception from the home faithful on Saturday, as he should.

Despite the more pressing concerns of securing their Championship status for next season, the FA Cup has proved a welcome distraction for Wednesday. Jos Luhukay won his first league game in midweek, beating promotion-chasing Derby 2-0. In the FA Cup, the Owls have defeated Carlisle and Reading in the previous two rounds meaning their Premier League opposition is by far their toughest task so far. The Owls could welcome back Tom Lees to the starting line-up, with the defender missing the last three months through injury. They will still be without 11 injured first team players, although Gary Hooper and Joost van Aken are thought to be only a couple of weeks away from returning.

Since arriving in South Wales, Carvalhal has lifted the Swans out of the relegation zone. After taking over the club with them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, they now sit in 14th. They’re undefeated in their last nine games, winning four of their last six in all competitions. Swansea’s switch to a back three has been key to their success, which has seen them become more resolute at the back and more of a threat going forwards. Jordan Ayew has been in particularly good form, with three goals in seven games.

The form of these two sides coming into this fixture couldn’t be starker. Wednesday have one league win in 16 to their name, whilst Swansea are flying high. To make matters worse, Wednesday haven’t beaten Swansea since 1984, having drawn three of their last four meetings. Swansea won the other fixture at Hillsborough 2-0, back in 2009.

Paul Tierney is the referee for this match up on Saturday lunch time. The official has an average booking points total of 28, which is one of the lowest in the Premier League. He is yet to show a red card this season, but has showed an average of 2.8 yellow cards across his ten top flight games.

Considering the form of these two sides, you’d expect there to be only one winner. I do expect Wednesday, however, to give a good showing of themselves in front of a packed home crowd. Carvalhal’s return should motivate the players, as well as the chance to win a place in the quarter-finals. Swansea should still progress though, with BTTS and an away win my best tip.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea City will be televised live on BT Sport 1 from 12:30PM GMT on Saturday 16 February 2018.

Prediction: Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Swansea City.

Chelsea vs Hull City, Betting Match Preview - Friday 15th February, Stamford Bridge, FA Cup - Fifth Round, BBC 1 – 7:45pm

Chelsea vs Hull City
Friday 15th February 2018, Stamford Bridge
FA Cup – Fifth Round

BBC 1 – 7:45pm

Chelsea vs Hull – Chelsea will be hoping to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup as they face Championship opposition Hull City.

Following back to back defeats to Bournemouth and Watford, Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory against West Brom. Eden Hazard was the Blues’ star man as he helped himself to two goals. That took the Belgian’s tally to 18 for the season and he will be looking to add to them tonight. The Belgian has six goals in as many games as he leads the task of firing Chelsea into the top four.

Monday’s match also saw deadline day signing Olivier Giroud make his full debut and the return of fit-again Alvaro Morata. With a two-legged tie with Barcelona sandwiched between trips to Old Trafford and the Etihad, Chelsea will need all of their players fit and firing as they enter a month that could shape their season.

With the race for the top four very much alive, it’ll be interesting to see how Chelsea juggle the three competitions. Whilst Barcelona are as tough as it gets in the Champions League, they have beaten them before and could do it again. Antonio Conte’s future is far from settled and I wonder how much the speculation over his future could derail the Champions’ season.

With the league title long gone, their focus has to be securing a top four finish whilst trying to pick up some silverware. The FA Cup represents their best opportunity to do that and whilst I expect Conte to make some changes, he knows how important this trophy could be to his future at the club.

After a turgid few months, Hull secured their first league win in 11 games at the weekend. Their 2-0 victory against Nottingham Forest lifted them out of the relegation zone, with the FA Cup now a welcome distraction to their league worries. Having knocked out Blackburn and Forest on route to the fifth round, Nigel Atkins’ side have little to lose as they hope to produce a shock result.

Results having slightly improved of late, with the Tigers losing just one of their last four games and conceding just twice. Having watched Norwich take Chelsea all the way to penalties in the last round, there’s no reason why they can’t aspire to take the Champions all the way this time.

Hull haven’t beaten Chelsea since 1988 and have lost their last six meetings between the two. Similarly, Hull have never won away at Chelsea, and have picked up just two points from a possible 42 against them. Andre Marriner is the official for Friday night’s clash, having refereed Swansea vs Burnley at the weekend. Marriner has an average booking points total of 28.9, which is a fairly average score compared to other referees in the league.

Whilst Chelsea haven’t been that convincing of late, I still expect to see them in the hat for the quarter-finals. Hull aren’t in great form and Conte’s side should really blow them away. I think Chelsea to win to nil would be my best tip, with a winning margin of exactly three goals a longer shot.

Chelsea vs Hull City will be televised live on BBC 1 from 7:45PM GMT in the UK.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-0 Hull City.
